The connection between our food choices and disease treatment. Dr. Greger has scoured the world’s scholarly literature on clinical nutrition and developed this new presentation based on the latest in cutting-edge research exploring the role diet may play in preventing, arresting, and even reversing some of our leading causes of death and disability. This is Dr. Greger's 2014 live presentation.
Subscribe to Dr. Greger’s free nutrition newsletter at www.nutritionfacts.org/subscribe.
Every year I scour the world’s scholarly literature on clinical nutrition, pulling together what I find to be the most interesting, practical, and groundbreaking science on how to best feed ourselves and our families. I start with the 12,000 or so papers published annually on human nutrition and, thanks to a crack team of volunteers (and now staff!), I'm able to whittle those down to about 3,000 studies, which are downloaded, categorized, read, analyzed, and churned into a few hundred short videos. This allows me to post new videos and articles every day, year-round, to NutritionFacts.org. This certainly makes the site unique. There’s no other science-based source for free daily updates on the latest discoveries in nutrition. The problem is that the amount of information can be overwhelming.
Currently I have videos covering 1,814 nutrition topics (nutritionfacts.org/topics/). Where do you even begin? Many have expressed their appreciation for the breadth of material, but asked that I try to distill it into a coherent summary of how best to use diet to prevent and treat chronic disease. I took this feedback to heart and in 2012 developed Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death (nutritionfacts.org/video/uproo..., which explored the role diet may play in preventing, arresting, and even reversing our top 15 killers. Not only did it rise to become one of the Top 10 Most Popular Videos of 2012 (nutritionfacts.org/2012/12/29/..., it remains my single most viewed video to date, watched over a million times (NutritionFacts.org is now up to more than a million hits a month!).
In 2013 I developed the sequel, More Than an Apple a Day: Combating Common Diseases (nutritionfacts.org/video/more-..., in which I explored the role diet could play in treating some of our most common conditions. I've been presenting it around the country (www.DrGreger.org/dates.html) over the past year and it ended up #1 on our Top 10 Most Popular Videos of 2013 (nutritionfacts.org/2014/01/09/....
Now I'm honored to bring you the third of the trilogy, From Table to Able: Combating Disabling Diseases with Food, in which I explore the role of diet in correcting some of our leading causes of disability. To more easily navigate through the menu of diseases, it is also available on DVD through my website (www.drgreger.org/dvds) or Amazon (smile.amazon.com/s/ref=smi_www.... If you want to share copies with others, I have a five for $40 special (enter coupon code 5FOR40TTA). All proceeds from the sales of all my books, DVDs, and presentations go to the 501c3 nonprofit charity that keeps NutritionFacts.org free for all, for all time. If you want to support this initiative to educate millions about eradicating dietary diseases, please consider making a donation (nutritionfacts.org/donate/).
After you’ve watched the new presentation, make sure you’re subscribed to get my video updates daily, weekly, or monthly to stay on top of all the latest (nutritionfacts.us5.list-manage.... For now, though, air-pop some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy!
Recorded live at the University of Pittsburgh on July 5, 2014 thanks to NAVS and Aaron Wissner.

Dr Greger, you are a real, live, superhero! Thank you SO much for all you do, and the way you do it, and also your "associates" who also advocate a plant based diet! I was 58 y.o, weighed over 300 lbs, smoked, was diabetic, high cholesterol & BP, on 12 different medications...the whole time bomb waiting to blow up, and feeling powerless to change any of it! The crisis led me to research, and from there to all the sources promoting this way of eating. I am now 61, lost over 150lbs, no longer smoke, no more diabetes, off almost all meds because everything abated, and out riding my recumbent trike and loving it all! I want everyone to know it is never too late, but don't wait as long as I did! It works without a doubt, you can do it! It may seem difficult at first, but you learn to love it because you feel so wonderful and alive!

Michael, thanks. Great talk again! Your 2012 annual talk, which I first learned about around Xmas last year, triggered my conversion to a 100% vegan starting Jan.1st this year. Each of your talk is some kind of empowerment, which is needed in a Meat-Egg-Dairy (MED) overloaded world. Unfortunately we have no such nutritional advocacy here in Germany but thanks to the internet, we have you. Good to see that the insurance sector has discovered the subject. That can become a driver for the vegan life style to become main stream. But be aware: They have their own agenda!

Buffy end of 2015 went off chicken, fish, I had only been eating since 2000 drinking distilled water since 2011 and Bragg's Apple cider viniger with the mother and there nutritional yeast, I also have seen great results, few weeks, slept till 4:30 am no waking up for bathroom. Now I sleep though till 5 am. My clock set for 6 am. Used to be wanting to stay in bed. No more refresh, wake up, do stretches, squats, balance on legs one at time, push ups, against wall. I am 66 yr. old. I have two glasses of water one with Bragg apple viniger 2 teaspoons other lemon fresh. Then some times juice carrots, celery, eat apple, pear, banana, pineapple. orange. That is my morning. Or if I want half a cantaloupe. Winters oatmeal gluten free, nuts, flax-seed, hemp, nuts. My ex who left me and son when young died pass month, over weight, sick, only 72. He had liver cancer never knew it. Before that he had diabeties, and cholesterol and blood pressure. I in 2000 reached first time 260lbs. 5ft 5 11 months later 145lbs, no diabeties. I am well now. God is great our Creator gave us all we need for our wonderful bodies that heal themselves.

They disregard this information for if they listen to it they would have to do some thing about what they eat. They would rather rely on allopathic doctor to be responsible for there health.
@AstralS7orm
@AstralS7orm 9 жыл бұрын
There's no such thing as "allopathic doctor". All GPs should do that - if they don't, they are sick care, not health care. Health care should start with keeping healthy people healthy as long as possible, also known by the unsexy name of preventative medicine. The problem is compounded by the fact that you're trying to change the habits of a lifetime, or actually more than one. (People learn cooking from their parents most of the time or worse, not at all.)f you were to start with kids *and their parents who control the food and money supply*, you'd have huge results. So many programs are missing the parent part and thus flounder. The simplest solution is... eating less. To eat less, you can manipulate a diet in many ways, some healthier than others, but going plant based (fiber and water loaded thus) is a very simple one. Another might be making it very bland (most low carb diets?). So now the title of an "allopathic" and "holistic" is relegated mostly to quacks. Generally those people have a bit inflated view of their practice, themselves, and little scientific backing of their ideas, starting cults rather than using properly tested solutions. Heck, even the quality of the research is often so-so or plain bad, if you throw even that out, there be dragons.) For instance, even Ornish research is quite suspect, as they never really check adherence to his scheme in general public. On the other hand, many diet studies are too short, limited to a year or less, which is way too short a time to actually verify a diet - or they rely too much on markers, which are known to have been developed on people with SAD, not on disease endpoints or direct health measures (like this artery study). And then you have great studies, but done on too small numbers of people... However, there is sheer mass of evidence that says more vegetables and fruit are better. The remaining question is to check how much of other foodstuffs you can eat and stay healthy and how that differs from person to person. Unfortunately, way too many people attack the solved problem time and again or attack a small subproblem of it, checking for a singular, reduced cause of health in a generally healthy diet and lifestyle. The remaining basic questions are whether an inverse diet, which has been shown to also be effective at weight loss, is safe in the long term; and what makes it more effective and/or easier to implement than plant based diets, because that happened too.

TV and the media in general are utterly conservative, they usually present this kind of thing as 'out there' even when it does get on. They're more interested in fads like the Paleo Diet but it is starting to change a little. A comprehensive picture of human health where a Vegan diet comes up as one of the healthiest around, hah, keep dreaming. This is still not something the orthodox nutritional and medical communities are prepared to tell people. They still see nutrition as based on a food's nutritional values, and not so much the type of food, in that paradigm things like meat, milk and eggs are something you should eat, apparently....

The connection with degenerative disc disorder is of most interest to me. I had a massive episode of a sciatica 10 years ago at 26, with disc herniation, it semi paralyzed me for a few months (couldn’t stand up for more than 5 mins). I have PTSD from that, to this day, and I’ve never been the same physically, but I have improved a great deal ever since turning vegan a year ago, along with some PRI exercises I’m doing, and wearing orthotics. I am not gonna give the entire credit to my vegan diet, a lot of it is biomechanics (I put most of my weight on my right side, and my pelvis shifts causing more pressure on the discs). I was already doing better before, but I am even better now. I hope my body can heal itself too, although the discs don’t come back, but maybe I can protect them better from further wearing down.

We do have a population that uses food to trump the lack of excitement in life. It's a fact I witness every day in my job. Palability primes on disease prevention. I've been asked many time by people I work with: " But what do you eat for pleasure?" "As a vegan, what do you use for pleasure?" Usually I roll my eyes in awe and terror and honestly I'm still working at finding answers that wouldn't be too insulting, I have none ready yet, so for now I just stare at them and change the subject as fast as the context allows me. People are a sad bunch, really.

The best answer is "relationships". Albeit an excellent colorful and tasty selection of vegetables is a close competitor. So many people are actually addicted to so-called pleasure foods... designed to be addictive.

You can tell them about vegan milkshakes, all natural with *no added sugar* and some fiber. That's what I would do for pleasure. I was really impressed with the taste and consistency the first time my friend made me a coconut milkshake! I hadn't fully transitioned into a vegan diet at this point, but after I drank the milkshake, first I was like, why is this so good? And then I was like, *...All is right with the world. I can live like this*, lol. I've yet to try vegan ice cream; my friend told me it's really good, but a vegan ice cream parlor is considerably harder to find. But seriously, vegan food can be quite delicious with some foodie knowledge. I've watched Food Network for years, and I made myself a vegan Italian sammich with toasted Ezekiel sprouted bread, Italian Deli tofurkey, pinch of black pepper, pinch of crushed red pepper, some relish, and a splash of olive oil and balsamic vinegar of Modena and voila(!), a healthy and fancy sounding vegan sammich, lol. Next time I'm gonna add some portobello mushrooms with that, seared in a pan with some Himalayan salt and olive oil... Damn, now I'm hungry.

At 60 years of age I found it difficult to sustain myself properly on keto. I think I did get some gains and also a wealth of knowledge about nutrition. I've watched thousands of videos and found that NO-ONE has really outlined all the facts properly but I do realise that we are in early days. I've decided to return to a healthy carb diet and will try again if I need to and hopefully try keto-os later as well.

Cool stuff. At some point the critique on doctor behavior is going to have to include commentary on financial incentives and make suggestions on how to reward physicians (not just the insurance companies) with healthy patients.

Maybe inverse: reward patients for sticking with the right doctor and lifestyle via lower insurance cost?

Great video. I wish I could get all my friends to watch it. I have a friend that works in the processed food industry and he refuses to watch any of these videos. How can we change that behavior? I liked the reference from insurance companies. Money drives things, and insurance companies may well join the movement for plant based diets.
