Notice, please: There was apparently a more PUBLIC process leading up to declaring the Democratic presidential candidate. With news anchor and correspondents (Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather and Mike Wallace) commentary to boot. Sharp contrast to today, which is far more orchestrated and left entirely to the political party to determine the content of the proceedings in terms of TV coverage. Just sooooo "organic," eh?

Liberalism is a misnomer - what people really mean is leftist. In 1968 liberalism essentially meant moderate - either center-left or center-right. It was seen as a pejorative term by the left wing of the party when they wanted a more radical position on Vietnam, Civil Rights, etc.

Humphrey says, “Let us resolve that never again shall we see what we have seen”. If he meant the ugly sights of Daley and his lackey George Dunne shouting anti-Semitic obscenities at Ribicoff as he nominated McGovern, the ugly sights of police brutality, the wheelchair-bound Bull Connor voting for Daley for vice president (the old symbol of repression passing the torch to the new), David Hoeh of New Hampshire being brutalized and slandered by the Chicago Gestapo, yeah, I’m with you, Hubert. But Hubert offered only crumbs to his opposition in victory. And he said after his platitude-laden speech, “Let’s stop kidding ourselves that Mayor Daley has done anything wrong.” Shame!
