Yes, he was an orator in a tradition that has largely died out in our country. He knew how to engage the crowd, as with his rhythmic denunciation of Goldwater's politics, and how to bring his speech to a rousing climax. In fact, he was a much better speaker than President Johnson and I wonder if LBJ felt that.

@@Spongebrain97 If Humphrey would have told LBJ to F-Off sooner than he did, it may have been a different story. Its amazing how LBJ sabotaged HHH's campaign for months after the Convention. Once Hubert had enough to LBJ's shenanigans and broke with him, he began climbing in the polls and even leading Nixon in a couple. Oh what could have been.

Humphrey died in 1978, just one year after his hypothetical 2nd term. Considering the deaths of Kennedy (1963), Hoover (1964), Eisenhower (1969), Truman (1972) and Johnson (1973), Nixon was the only living President for a whole 18 months. Had Humphrey won in 1968 as well as 1972, he would've been the only President for 4 years, then his successor would've been the only one after Humphrey died in 1978. That would've been a whopping 6 dead Presidents in less than 15 years, compared to the last 15 years (2008-2023), when just one President died (Bush Sr in 2018) PS it's 11:20PM EST 2/20/2023. Jimmy Carter was still alive when I edited this comment.

He did part with Johnson partially over Vietnam in a speech given in Salt Lake City approximately Oct 1, 1968, in which he said he would consider a bombing pause a worthwhile risk for peace. Following that speech, he gained support. Had he given that speech earlier in the campaign, perhaps it would have made a difference. He was caught, I realize now, in a delicate political situation. Johnson was lukewarm toward him, and only late in the campaign did Johnson ask Connelly to do what he could to help carry the ticket in Texas.

I favored Nixon in that election. I saw both in Kansas City, Missouri in 1968. I was with a group of FFA members when I personally spoke to Humphrey. I was in the city for the Future Farmers of America National Convention.

I fail to realize how anyone could consider Hubert H.
