RIP to the actors who played Catherine and Gehn. (Sheila Goold (passed away in 2017) and John Keston in 2022 at age 97), these two characters in Riven, they'll never know how many hours I spent playing the game and experiencing their incredible acting in the game. I never thought of them as actors when I was a kid, they were the actual characters of Gehn and Catherine to me. Incredible!

I think I would be ok with the use of AI to bring their performances into a better quality for more modern releases. That said, it looks like the performances were baked into the scenery so I don’t know how well it would work.

@@vernanonix I don't know that much about AI .. but good editing software can isolate a moving person from a background. If the timeline was after.. then including the children from the original as adults would be fun also the original cast.. Maybe with references to the past also to honour those who aren't with us. I'm just thinking... Maybe set it as a later timeline.. Riven wasn't completely destroyed only where the last scene in the game was.. With a little damage other places.. which would give scope for revealing a few new places.. At the beginning of the original you see the man on a ledge after he had been darted... In the new game you can climb down there and find an entrance into the rock... The knife at the gate.. to get people to click there... Could be used to cut the rope so the gate will open.. A boat on crater lake would open possiblities.. All that said... I prefer the high quality slide version.. Myst Masterpiece over the real-time Myst .. I have seen it has a slide setting.. which several playthoughs switch to as they prefer that style of play... Also the image quality and sound are more immersive.

@@mySeaPrince_ Riven was canonically destroyed. Ghen made unstable worlds, which was one reason why Atrus was desperate to get Catherine back as fast as he could. You can find the Riven book in Exile and the linking panel is broken.

OH NO!! Why is the world only now seeing this??? XD I know Rand always disliked playing Atrus but man it looks like everyone was having so much fun! That 90s years of small (and growing!) game developers founded on little more than passion and a love of screwing around... it's a far cry from now. Sometimes I wonder if these people had any idea what they were doing! XD But they sure left some legacy...

The live actors in the games were everything - made it so immersive. Myst and Riven still gives me goosebumps, Riven especially. Absolute masterpiece of a game!

What serendipitous timing. I finally finished Riven last week. I swear I’ve got post-Riven depression, I wish I could play 100 hours more of it. Solved the fire marble puzzle by myself and felt like I won an Olympic medal, I was so proud. I’ve simply never played another game like it. I thought Gehn’s characterization was especially well done, so subtly sinister. Seeing him here making farty noises is a post-game blessing, thank you Cyan.

These are wonderful, thanks for sharing. Fun fact, actors will intentionally flub lines with goobledygook when they don't like how they're delivering it to prevent the director or editor from being able to use what they feel is a subpar delivery.

I collect older video games and consoles. I picked up Myst with no prior knowledge of it and loved it! I read that there was a sequel and had to play it. Just finished Riven for the Playstation 1 earlier this week and wanted to find some behind the scenes content. Atrus, Catherine, and Ghen are all serious characters, so it put a smile on my face to see the cast all having a fun time in these bloopers.

Missed and Riven were the first games I played, I bought my first computer and right across from it was the video games and I loved the artwork on the box and that’s why I bought them. My Husband thought I was crazy, but we had hours and hours of fantastic gameplay. Those games will always be super special. Thank you so much for such wonderful games.

I just wanted to say thank you for creating the games and worlds that have shaped my life. I was almost two years old. My first video-game ever was Riven and it was with my mother that sat me on her lap and we played together. Throughout my childhood, I was enthralled with the worlds, the lore, the books. I've made Myst-like projects, home videos and made linking books with screens. Now I'm 24 yrs old. I watch this video and I still vividly remember everything like it was yesterday. I still come back to Riven and the other Myst games often and I've enjoyed Obduction as well. But I just wanted to thank everyone at Cyan as well as Rand & Robyn for changing my life both with my career and shaping my desire to explore and learn. Your games will always be a cherished and happy memory in my life. Keep on inspiring guys! :)

Woah! So cool to see so many years later! The live action video from the Myst games was legit the best part of it all because it felt both human and real and sold the story all the way. Another old game that did this was Jedi Knight 2 where all the big scenes were live action and really made Kyle Katarn come to life.

I really really hope the new riven keeps the old video. I know it's low resolution, but it just wouldn't feel right to see another actor or a CG model play those roles.

To be fair, they probably have much higher quality in the original recordings. They would have been downscaled for the game. Hopefully they'll be able to use the original characters in a quality that won't be detrimental to the remake. 🤞🏻

@@LynetteCMy assumption is they would have been recorded in broadcast quality NTSC onto magnetic tape. That upscales pretty reasonably. You could even make it a stylistic choice

Yup. I just finished Riven for the first time, and the little girl tripping was used in the game. You can tell by the crew's reaction to her tripping that it wasn't planned either!
