Did you know that many Lagosian families have Brazilian names? e.g. Pereira, Ferreira, Vera Cruz, Pedro, da Rochas, Dos Santos, Da Silva, Domingos, Damazio, Dacosta, Cardoso, Candido, Campos, Soares, de Souza, etc. They are the descendants those born free and lived free until they were sold and taken away as slaves to work the plantations in Brazil but kept their origins and identity alive in the oral records and traditions they preserved and passed down to their descendants generation after generation; and when slave trade was abolished, the freed descendants returned to the country their ancestors were taken away from. But they still had their Brazilian names. A few knew their original family names and found their clans and reverted to their original family names on their return. They also had Brazilian first names. Egidio. Eduardo. Hemengildo. Graciano. They built their houses in the Brazilian style and settled in a particular area on the Lagos island which became known, then, as the Brazilian Quarters. They held a caretta i.e. a carnival, every year, with costumes and masks, in the Brazilian Quarters. I remember from my childhood though I never participated in any nor alkowed to go anywhere close. I don't think they still have them. My late maternal beloved grandmother was a de Souza. She still spoke some Brazilian/Portuguese words. Over one hundred years after the abolition of slavery. Interestingly, this must mean just like those forcibly taken away were careful to preserve and pass down their culture from the land they were forcibly taken from, their descendants who voluntarily returned to that land of origin, equally preserved and passed down their culture (which includes language) from the land they freely left. And, of course, like all the Brazilian returnee families, we all grew up eating frejon every year on Good Friday. My grandmother used to speak to me about the Brazilian returnee families, their history in Nigeria, actually Lagos, their beginnings, early activities, and the Brazilian heritage. She loved to tell me and I really liked to listen and hear. I knew it gave her so much pleasure to talk about her Brazilian heritage to me, and now I see that part of the reason may have been also because she was able in her turn to tell and teach and by doing so, preserve it, generation to generation, just as it had been to her. Seeing how much it meant to her, how happy she was to in those our moments together on that topic, how even nostalgic she would seem, although she had never been to Brazil (maybe she was nostalgic of her parents and family and the string Brazilian community and culture that must have been her childhood), and wanting to make her even happier, I, little tiny me, and probably still in my primary school uniform, on a particular during one of those our talks, suddenly announced to my grandmother that one day I was going to go to Brazil and that I would come back and tell her all about it. I don't remember if I actually used the words "I promise" but it was a promise. My beloved maternal grandmother, the only grandparent still alive when I was born, thus the only grandparent I ever knew and had growing up, died whilst I was still in secondary school. To the only extent thus permitted and made possible by God, I kept my promise. A year or two after I started my first job after graduation, and started making my own money and could travel where I wanted, not having to go along with my parents, I went to Brazil. I only had about ten days but made sure I went to different regions, and didn't stay only in Rio. I went to Rio (Corcovado mountain! the Copacabana!Ipanema beach! And Ipanema! From the song! And I was walking in it! And I was walking on its beach! I sang the song!), Sao Paulo (the feel/rythm of Lagos is like the feel of Sao Paulo and Rio combined i.e. the business and commerce capital spirit and hustle of the Paulistas and the fun-loving spirit of the Cariocas!), Foz do Iguaçu (such lovely waterfalls!), Manaus (I went on the River Amazonas!) and to Brasileira (which is like the feel of Abuja, which like it, is the seat of government and political power). Brazil is a lovely, beautiful country, extremely rich in its diversity, both human geographical. Don't be a stranger. I hope, in the mercies of God, to be able to tell my grandmother about Brazil in eternity in Heaven.

Young Diva. Beautiful lady. Yes, you are very elegant. Thanks for sharing your beautiful experiences in Nigerian life. We in the Americas do not got to see African and Africa scenes. Very educational and refreshing to see, people who look like us. Just pursuing happiness.

I really appreciate you putting this series together. As an African American that found out that huge percentage of their DNA comes from Nigeria, it is very interesting and fun to learn more about the culture.
