Chaim Engel - Brutal Revenge of Hero of Great Escape from Sobibor - Holocaust - Sobibor Uprising. Chaim Engel was born on the 10th of January 1916 in Brudzew, Poland.
The second world war began on the 1st of September, 1939, only 2 weeks before Chaim’s tour of duty in Polish compulsory army service was scheduled to end.
The German occupation of Poland was exceptionally brutal.
When in March 1940 all Jewish prisoners of war were returned to Poland, Chaim Engel was one of them. He then got a job at a farm near Lublin.
It is estimated that the Germans killed between 1.8 and 1.9 million non-Jewish Polish civilians during World War II. In addition, the Germans murdered at least 3 million Jewish citizens of Poland.
In November 1942 Chaim Engel was sent so Sobibor.
About 250,000 victims were murdered in this killing center.
When Chaim’s transport arrived in Sobibor, the German ordered him to step out of the column. 18 or 20 people from the entire transport were picked out. Chaim’s brother was not chosen.
Partly because of his good health, Chaim was assigned to sort through clothing of the doomed prisoners.
The systematic deportation of Dutch Jews to the death camps started in the summer of 1942. In April 1943 Selma Wijnberg arrived in Sobibor. She would become Chaim’s girlfriend.
The next day the Sobibor prisoners found all their clothes full of blood. Chaim found a note in a pocket which said:
In September 1943 twenty Jewish Red Army prisoners of war, the soldiers who had the necessary expertise to pull off an escape, arrived at Sobibor on a transport from the Minsk Ghetto and were selected for labor.
One of them, Alexander Pechersky, would become a leader of the revolt which began late in the afternoon on the 14th of October 1943.
The first to kill was Johann Niemann.
One of the targets was Rudolf Beckmann who was to be killed by 2 inmates, but in the last minute one of them got scared and did not want to go.
Chaim Engel, knowing that there was no turning back because too many Germans were dead, volunteered to kill Beckmann in his office
Chaim and a kapo named Pozyczki went to the administration building where they found Beckmann behind his desk. While Pozyczki restrained Beckmann, Engel stabbed their overseer with a bread knife and with every stab Chaim cried, "This is for my father, for my brother, and for all the Jews you killed." Beckmann tried to fight back causing Engel's knife to slip, cutting his own hand and covering him with blood. But this did not stop him. When Beckmann was dead, the two, not having enough time to better hide his body, pushed Beckmann under the desk and took his rifle. When Chaim came out, Selma, his Dutch Jewish girlfriend, was there and cleaned his face which was covered with Beckmann’s blood and put something on his wound.
In total 11 SS officers were killed by the rebels.
Chaos then took over; prisoners had to escape by climbing over the barbed wire fences or running out the main gate through a mine field under heavy machine gun fire.
Some stepped on mines. Some gave up and didn't run at all. Chaim Engel belonged to those who did. He grabbed his girlfriend Selma and ran to the main gate. They made it outside and ran into the woods. After running the whole night, they made it only 6 kilometers from the camp.
One day in June 1944, starving, frightened and infested with lice, they approached a farmhouse and asked the farmer if he would be willing to hide them.
The farmer dressed Selma as an old lady and put Chaim on a wagon, covered with branches, and drove them to his brother who was living about 10 kilometres away in a better, more isolated location. They lived for 9 months in a hayloft of a barn, without being able to go outside and always scared that they might be found or turned over to the police.
They were liberated by Red Army on the 23rd of July 1944.
They emigrated to the Netherlands, then to Israel in 1951 and then to the USA in 1957 where Chaim started his own business and became a jeweller.
Until the end of their lives, Chaim and Selma remained in contact with the Poles who had saved their lives and kept helping them financially as much as they could.
There were many tears shed for Chaim and Selma Engel.

My Mom gave me Ann Frank's Diary to read as a girl. It was very moving and so sad that all her potential ended at the camp but that her story and spirit lived on to inspire others. My Dad was a B24 pilot in WW2 and he flew into parts of Europe at night to drop not bombs but supplies to the resistence and personnel and money against the Nazis. It was at night with just torch light sometimes and short runways in the north over fjords. No radar either just road maps. All were heros.

As a Pole, I’m glad that quit common thing among average citizens as me and my peers is there’s no signs of any collaboration or cooperation with Germans in life’s of our ancestors. And despite the fact now we’re being blamed for holocaust, the truth is that only in occupied Poland there was death penalty for helping Jews and in the same country there was the highest number of those who sacrificed whole families to save Jewish lifes. You did not mention that the Camp Guards were Ukrainians Latvians and Lithuanians. They were brutal in the extreme and John Demjaniuk was one of them, I came across a man in Italy in the 70's who was also a Guard at Sobibor and later at Mauthausen he had never been Charged, but had been freed by the American forces in Linz and worked for them, he was able to give them much information which led to many arrests but he was given a pardon. He was Ukrainian. One of the many thousands of SS Guards who survived the War, I hope that there is a hell for the vile Bastards.

I live in Australia (lived here since I was 12 originally from Armenia) and when I was in high school we were living in Melbourne and every morning as I would walk out the front to go to school there would be this elderly gentleman who was next door and he was always out in the garden and my younger brother (who was 10 at the time) often kicked his football into next door's yard and when we would go over to get the ball the elderly gentleman would give us sweets and offer us soft drinks, then about 2 wks before we move house, old Konrad had the AFP show up on his doorstep with an international warrant for his arrest.... He was Konrad Kalejs, a guard at a concentration camp during WW2.

I really admire Jews... They are true survivers... Tough inteligent people... During the WW2 Germans killed 6mln Polish citizens (2mln of them were Jews)... There was a death penalty for saving the Jews in occupied Poland ruled by Germans... Polish underground state (or resistent movement if you like) has had 300.000 active members (vounteers) who risk their and their families lives back in the day... Everyone who let the Jews to the Germans could have been persecuted by the underground court and the penalty for that kind of activity was death... There were special squads of Polish Home Army soldiers to execute the justice... There is no other nation which has as many "Righteous Among the Nations" in Yad Vashem as Poles have... Tens thousands of Poles were killed after the WW2 by Soviets (NKWD)... Who was in charge of "NKWD" in Poland back then ? Don't you know ? These are facts sir... Don't ignore them...

@@robertwisniewski9059 : You have all your numbers wrong. Suggest you do some reading by honest Christian authors instead of spouting inaccuracies. As for all the Polish Righteous Among the Nations: This is because there were more Jewish people in Poland than anywhere else - but per capita in Poland there were very few who genuinely helped Jews. Post-war, when some of the few survivors tried to return to their own homes in Poland, what did the Poles do? Attacked them, and kept all the Jewish belongings they (the Poles) had stolen. Then, until 1948 there were Polish massacres of Jews. “Jew Hunts” they called them. Read a book (there are many) about the Kielce massacre. And so, by the end of 1948 there were scarcely any Jews left in your country. How happy you were! All this information is in German, Russian and Polish archives, in which only TRUTH is recorded. The Germans, especially, know ecactly how many Jews in Poland were murdered, and if you search the archives you will find ALL your numbers are inaccurate. Your English usage is a good indication of your poor education. If you cannot write, you have not read.

Anyone who might be reading my post will most likely not agree with me! However, if we are honest with ourselves one would have to agree… the Germans of that time period should be held responsible! You mi get ask why! I have yet to find a video that shows a German with a sad crying face …. They all seem to enjoy and approve the pain inflicted on these least! I hope they all burn in hell.

Fair play to him ,he had the rage and anger to kill those German officers without hesitation or remorse, and through it all survived to tell his story,I no god forgives him,I'd say if he could have he would have helped others like him but some where to afraid to take the chance if it was me I would have, known it was either stay there and die or try to excape known you could be shot but god was on his side like most others who survived while war was still happening,,rest in peace to those who died by the command of an insanity man, amen to them 🌷🌷🌷🌷🐦☀️🌈💖👪👫💏🌷

Chaim Engel and his wife, Selma lived to tell the world about the brutal and crude murders of thousands and thousands of innocent people and children. I have read about the start of the rebellion in Sobibor. The brave barber who was able to start the revolution in Sobibor against the Nazis by having the man with the ax finally strike back at the most sadist of the guards. To see the glory of the prisoners of Sobibor running for their lives would have been one of the greatest testament to the power of the human mind against evil. I loved looking at the farmer and his wife who helped Chaim and Selma hide until the end of the war. We must always present these true stories in the raw form that state them best for future generations. It could happen again one day. Humans are inhumane to other humans when given the chance. Thank you for this. It is such a meaningful video that will break your heart, scare you and eventually this is a beautiful ending to a very horrifying and true story. Thank you.

Yet another gripping story of what millions of people were forced to endure just because of their race or ethnicity. What is really scary is that most of the German men who committed these atrocities were just normal people before Hitler came to power. Many had friends, employers, or had spouses of the Jewish faith! In fact Jews had been a substantial part of the German culture for centuries! How could so many German citizens turn a blind eye or even participate in the the Holocaust?
