Working Horses With Jim

4 жыл бұрын

Bill, Lady, and I went into the woods to cut and bring home some pine logs to saw into clapboard siding.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Jim great video, that blonde team are a credit to you and your horsemanship, love your practical and common sense way of doing things. You need to make yourself a pellet mill and turn that pile of sawdust into wood pellets and sell them for heating stoves etc.Greetings from sunny Australia.

Greg Kilgour glad you like the video. All the sawdust goes to the horse barn to bed the horses.

Couldn't quite tell how your saw tilt works for the siding angle but , whether to tilt the cutter head or bed. I have been able to stick dry spruce in 3 months, usually takes a year for Oak, to use as furniture craft wood. I imagine a day or 2 in the milk house kiln would push alot of moisture out too if you can get some cross ventilation on that sticked pile. Nice work Jim, you have an interesting way of cutting your back cut, works beautiful and your hinge wood looks perfect, your cuts line up nicely, not easy to do , lots of practice. That little hardwood sapling took a beating on the skid, but that happens sometimes in tight quarters. I was thinking to pull the trunk log first but then where do you put it? Take in all the way out and come back for the other, may make another trip. (Thinking and learning..) If I guy could have a drying rack, then put the green chain in the drying rack, and cut the dry boards for siding, then replentish the drying rack, in a perfect world. I recon you do that when you can, I see lots of your drying piles around, neatly stored away... Thanks, John

My father and grand-father used to talk about working with horses. I recall all the tack that was in the barn. Thanks for giving me a glimpse of what it takes to farm with them.

Jim, you probably are not out for compliments, but this is a picture book operation, from the felling to the way your horses act.
