From TrekWorks
Segment One of the AMT 1/1400 Scale USS Enterprise D Clear kit Build.
Here I am just going over the plan for the build while showing some of the model kit bits.
I will again be doing some extensive lighting effects on this model and have decided to
do the paint and scrape method for the window port lighting utilizing the clear plastic of the model kit.
After I get the parts all washed and free of the thick mold release agent, I'll be begin the initial assembly and laying out the lighting for it.
That will be shown in the next segment of the build series.

I'm so glad to find you working on this model! I was given my first models as a birthday gift (both the clear and gray versions of the 1701-D), and I've spent quite a while watching tips from you and ModelManTom before diving into them. Before starting the clear model, I'm learning the basics putting together the grey model. Thank you for all of your tips and advice - they are helping this modeling-newbie greatly!!

This looks like it wil be a very interesting build. Cannot wait to see it! I have been learning alot from watching you and Modelman Tom. I need to get back into building models, it has been a few years. Last one I did was to take two models of the Titanic, and mod them into her sister Britannic, which had extra decking and a different lifeboat arrangement, plus she was painted as a Hospital ship. That was a fun build.

Glad your finding some useful info from the videos. I really like the clear kit. Its mostly time consuming doing the windows by scraping off the paint but much easier than drilling them all out. Best of luck and enjoy building both of those kits.

I suggested to Round 2 around a year ago about releasing the original T.O.S. Romulan Bird Of Prey & the Klingon D-7 Battlecruiser in clear plastic and marketing it as "Cloaked" versions of the ships. They said, they would consider it. At least they've done something like it. I'm looking forward to the progress of this kit build!!!! :-)

Unfortunately no window details on my copy of the decals.Currently, all of the raised details on my model have been sanded off too.At this time, there is primer and black out coats on the model and the windows are masked for the second time. While I was removing the first set of masks on the windows, most of them came out pretty clean.I'm not using the decals on mine but going with aztec masks from DLM.I'm glad to hear you've started ,you'll enjoy it !

Hmmm dental acrylic? Never heard of using that stuff. I do use micro scale micro krystal klear. It's a product that alot of model railroad guys have used for years. It looks like Elmers white glue but dries clear. A good method I have figured out is described in my Reliant build video. Basically, I use a small plastic syringe to inject the krystal klear into the window ports at the very end after all the painting and decal work is done. Fill em up, wipe off the excess, let it dry and your done.

I have not looked over the decal set so far. Do the decals have windows details over the aztec colors? If so I'll bet you could overlay the decal over the scraped window and will help hide imperfection of the scaping work. When lit the light should go right through the blacked out window decal and look lit as normal. Imperfection of the window is hard to see then while the bright light comes out. Starting sanding now to take off the raised details all over the beasty!

Have been wanting to follow someone who is building this particular kit. I'm sure it'll have it's own unique issues/properties because it is a totally clear kit. Do you paint something like this on the outside of the kit or paint only the inside to have the colors come through the kit? Just wondering. Good luck, looking forward to more videos on this!!!

After looking at the decals in my kit, they will cover most of the windows after application. The scraping method may be the way to go if using the decals.

hi there, I just purchased this model a year ago and it has yet to be touched. I haven't done any modelling since I last built something with my dad. Basically, your videos are awesome, and TNG is my favorite series (I'm a 90's kid), so I really want this to be an amazing model. Would you have recommendations for some kits to do beforehand to get myself into the swing of things? Or any tips in general really? Keep up the great work!

Do you ever use dental acrylic to block out drilled windows? Or when you drill do you just leave them open as holes in the model? Look forward to seeing how you build this!

Probably regular Styrene glue. Unless of coarse your aware of a better alternative?

Would you recommend this kit? I recently received my Enterprise E, but it had incorrect and incomplete parts, so I am reluctant to purchase another AMT model.

Hoang Chris Chris you'll have to use a dremel tool with a drill bit that is small enough to cut out the windows the right size but big enough to be sturdy. You'll probably go through a few bits by the time you finish. There are over a thousand windows on that model.
