The parallels of seeing just how a like Zeke and the original King Fritz are always get me. Zeke wants to "save" the eldians by putting an end to them. And King Fritz wanted the Eldians to enslave the world. In the end Zeke acts exactly like King Fritz would have by commanding Ymir instead of treating her like a person who has suffered for an eternity. Time pretty much stands still in that world so she's actually been toiling away for more than 2000 years. For a literal eternity.

i don't know why, but the founder Ymir's story resonates with me soooo much out of everything in aot. like we have both sides either seeing her as a monster or as a goddess, meanwhile the whole time she was just a girl forced into a horrible situation, a slave. and that moment when Eren hugs her and tells her she can be her own person is just so powerful. she's just a little girl idk it makes me so sad 😭

Used her whole mortal life and an unknown amount of time in paths creating titans for shifters. She makes all titans from scratch with only a bucket of water at her disposal so you could already guess just how long it takes her to make even the smallest titan... then there's also the fact that time passes many times faster in paths than in real life, to the point where building a giant ass colossal appears instant in the actual world, and she spent 2000 mortal years doing this. She's definitely one of the most tragic characters in fiction

i love how the idea of being "ladylike" that Frida is talking about relates to the story of founder Ymir, our Ymir, as well as Historia. this idea that being a lady means being selfless, being almost a "slave" to others. but that's an idea that the current Ymir told Historia to reject, and that she should instead live for herself. thus, we got "the worst girl in the world" Historia who decided to live her life for herself (until now we see that she's pregnant pretty much against her will, making her story a tragedy). basically it's hard to get my thoughts completely written down because they're so abstract lmao but i think aot has a lot to say about gender roles in this episode that a lot of people overlook.

I love the interpretation about what Eren means to Ymir, and it also relates to the 9 titans which are presumedly parts of Ymir's soul, because the Attack titan and its desire for freedom was always the part of Ymir that truly wanted to be free but couldn't be in her life, like Ymir reached out across time for someone to help her even if it took 2000 years. I think this was simbolized by the white flower when Ymir was "freed" and being chased, the flower having 9 petals, one of them stained with blood of her just trying to escape, sadly I think this is also where she gave up on the idea of being free, going back to the king even though she had all the power not to do so
@aaronyayger
@aaronyayger Жыл бұрын
Interesting thing to think about, because of how time works. The Attack Titan's "yearning for freedom" trait isn't actually Ymir's, it's Eren's. He was the one always pulling that titan forward. He was reaching out to her from the future so far away.

@@aaronyayger If you think that a slave didn't want to be free from the torture & BS she went through. You're kinda crazy. Because her wanting freedom, when she opens her eyes & you see the anger. Is the literal EXACT thing we got with Eren back in season 1 after his mom was eaten/town destroyed. The way I've always seen it, the feelings Ymir always had were passed on to Eren. Eren is the incarnate of Ymir. Also, the first episode & this episodes titles kind of indicate that as well. Eren also never cared about freedom, until Armin showed him the book & he seen pictures of the outside world. There's lots of indications & examples that Eren initially didn't have that " I want freedom! " thought until that point. And it got even stronger after like I said his mom was eaten & his town destroyed. Also, the very first episode showed an example of Eren seeing the future when he was taking his nap & then wakes up crying

@@Kumoii Sorry, bud, but thats wrong. He says he's always been this way since the day he was born, he also says "ever since I was born, there stood those miserable walls." He has always yearned to not be caged. She may have wanted him, but nothing he does isn't his own will. He has always been like this. Also, given how time works, all the future memories Eren receives are from himself. It's him pushing himself, not Ymir. You greatly misunderstand his character. Ymir and him are partners. He saved her, she didn't prepare things for him, he prepared everything, because that's what being last in line and being able to affect the past means.
@Kumoii

@@aaronyayger I definitely didn't misunderstand his character. And I never stated that he didn't save Ymir, cause he did. But he was NOT always on " I wanna be free! " train. It literally wasn't until Armin show him the books. There's countless flashbacks to him saying so/stating that. And I also never said it was anyone else's motives that pushes him. I know it's strictly him wanting to be free. What I said is that Armin showed him the potential outside world, everything else took off from there. And like I said, there's A LOT of flashbacks that prove what I'm saying to be true.

Move over Shadis/Grisha/Reiner/Zeke, Ymir has the real worst backstory. Also the OST that plays over most of Ymir's backstory, which is also called "From You, 2000 Years Ago", is one of my favorite tracks in all of AOT, it's so epic and sad
@CHV910
@CHV910 Жыл бұрын
Her fate in the “afterlife” was arguably worse than her backstory. However, the biggest irony being that in the end, she was as responsible for the Rumbling as Eren. As much a victim as a perpetrator. So while we are as viewers brought to empathize with her and Eren, their actions can’t be justified (although it can be understood- like every other character’s tragic past). That’s part of the message of the author, to portray that we can all play the game of taking sides, blaming others or debating who had it “worse”. But at the end of the day it comes down personal responsibility, to stop the cycle of hate...

After reading chapter 137 a lot of people got recommended for several days a video about a prehistoric worm called "Hallucigenia" that looked exactly like the one in the manga and on which its design is based. Because KZbin's algorithm associated the video with those who had searched for something related to AOT, it started to be recommended to people who hadn't even read the manga chapter yet, and I was SHOCKED when I saw it in the manga after days of ignoring the video on my recommended list. Almost like it created the impression that all of us Attack on Titans fans were Ymir's subjects connected to Eren that was sending us the video from the future XD!

At this point, I was in the same mindset as you. Basically, I was holding onto hope for a 3rd option to present itself by the end of this whole story, but in the moment, if I'm Eren, and my only two options are to let everyone I love - along with my entire race - be wiped out, or to wipe out the rest of the world...the rest of the world can kiss my angry ass. It's genocide either way, and, while Paradis would be a much smaller genocide, what's my incentive to care about that numbers game, when my loved ones/bloodline are on that smaller side?
@kafazyshorthop9909
@kafazyshorthop9909 Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but the answer to genocide is not genocide. Absolutely nothing justifies it. Violence carries only the power to compel action, not the power to persuade opinions. Thus, a defeated foe may be forced to take certain actions or accept certain conditions, but his mind is unaltered. It was never a binary choice. "A false dilemma is a logical fallacy that presents only two options or sides when there are many options or sides" we see in the show that Marlians can and will change their mind about Eldians, and that progress was happening. It's not instant, but it's there. Not to mention that the island of Paradise had the capability to wipe out any military power that was threatening them, that's a large bonus to their goal, one that may not have been needed to achieve a none genocidal goal. Nobody can possibly say that the innocent civilian men, women and children across the world deserve to die because of the actions of a few, none of them have done anything wrong, nor were they any threat to the island. Hiding behind the pretense of protecting ones loved ones is the antithesis of what's happening. It's not protecting ones loved ones, It's using the hostility of a few the slaughter everyone. It's easy to boil something down to an "Us or Them" mentality, and with that it becomes incredibly easy to try and justify the most evil of actions. You will notice that a lot of the most heinous crimes against humanity occurred under people who utilized that thought process. Eren is a fantastic character, but he is a monster that needed to be stopped. This is not an attack on you, just your argument. I hope this helped you in some way. I apologize if I came off as overly aggressive and combative, that was not my intention.
@Tubemansi
@Tubemansi Жыл бұрын
@@kafazyshorthop9909 You're not coming across that way, but I don't think you understood my argument. In fact, it's not really an argument. I'm not saying that genocide is an answer, nor am I justifying it in this, or any context. I'm saying I understand Eren's desire, and, in his position, would probably do the same thing if those were the two options. As I said, hopefully a third option will present itself (don't spoil for Aege or anyone else), but right now, Eren - like Zeke - appears to be thinking in "final" terms; unlike Armin's more measured approach that would put a pause on the conflict. Thinking in "final" terms, without knowledge of any other plans, if my options are to, either, give the world peace by letting my entire race be wiped out by bombs/sterilization, or destroy the world to give my race peace, I'm choosing the latter. I have no need to justify this choice, because I know how horrible it is...and I don't care. There is no incentive for me to be a good person and think about all the innocent lives lost on the one side, when all I care about are the lives on my side. Again, I, the audience member, am holding onto hope for a better outcome than that, but, as Aege was saying, awful as it is, I get it.

11:52 back in the day when we saw the griesha backstory episode Kruger mentioned that Ymir's soul split into 9 and each titan represented a concrete thing, like the attack titan being the titan that fights for freedom for freedom's sake (taking this with a pinch of salt since he is an attack titan he might not be a reliable narrator), since then we've always theorized each titan user embodied an aspect of her since they share aspects between people with the same titan, here we can see exhibiting some of the same qualities the titan shifters we know, she presumably went back on the first place to help her people even tho they weren't good to her the moment they got pressed, same as the other ymir when the priest said it was all her idea throwing her under the bus and she played along, that quality of self sacrifice even towards those who maybe don't deserve it, later again at the timestamp why does she die? just like Reiner she lacks the will to live and neither of them is allowed to rest, always marching, always tanking the hits, most of the line of succession of the founding titan being slaves to a king that's long gone, later on as she does the same face as eren did we are to speculate what attribute is he? so far as an anime only I would say he is everything that the other parts of her kept in check but concentrated and macerated for 2000 years of titan succession, one of the reasons kruger chose griesha is that he saw the same hatred he once had in griesha but I think it goes beyond that, eren hates, he is angry and he yearns for things that are mostly unobtainable to him and he is also a slave to the one he thought was the only person who could set him free, eren himself, considering that he did to his father the same thing the king did to ymir I can only feel bad for her because that's essentially the same dude that she's aiding symbolism count: 8:25 13 arms pointing to her, like the amount of time each titan shifter gets 9:10 her blood fell into a flower with 9 petals, one from each titan 9:18 a giant tree that is mostly vertical symbolizes the path's tree before it acquired the branches and ymir was the only shifter 10:34 this is what griesha interpreted looking at the old posters and texts when he was an insurrectionist 10:55 this is what the marlyans said 12:37 not symbolism but watch the season 2 ending again :)

I mean, Eren has an extremist, but logical, vision going to the extremes. You don't villainise him because the storytelling has been about him all along, but you forget, when you say "Marley started it"" that technically, and you see it in this episode, it's Eldia who kind of started it for 2000 years by wiping out Marley and genociding all around and breeding more titans to maintain its Empire and its domination. This is the masterpiece of the show imo, because the "real bad guys" if you want to speak in terms of body count and atrocities, are actually the people you've been following all along (or rather their ancestors). But we of course empathize more with Eldians because today they didn't deserve what came onto them from Marley (and the anime started with them as victims), but what if the anime started from Marley's point of view 2000 years ago ? I'm not saying who's right or wrong, but definitely the show is challenging our biases and our empathy towards "main characters", even though the History (capital H) points to different culprits. and that's what's so good about this show. Nothing can excuse wiping out the whole world, all the collaterate victims who didn't ask for anything, fathers, wives, children, all innocents. But I guess if it's Eren striking the blow.... meh ?
@AegeChill
@AegeChill Жыл бұрын
I mean yeah, this all pretty much what this whole season has been driving home. I was more so at the time of this recording, understanding the logic behind Eren doing this. It would be OUT OF POCKET to excuse what he's doing. When I said "marley started it" I was more so talking about what was happening directly to the folks on paradise not Eldians as a whole since Eren is acting the way he is not for the sake of all Eldians but just his home, I mean he did start wildng out even more when the whole world made them their enemy. Like I said, its one of those it is what it is type of things imo, I don't really empathize with the Eldians or Marley as a whole, but I do so for specific characters. Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Galliard, Falco, Reiner, heck even now with the full story I have favor for this Yimr. As much as I get the story continues to drive home the idea of things simply are not black/white, right/wrong and good/bad, I also understand that there will always be bias for a viewer, its can be minimized sure, but it will always be there in one form or another. Yeah, what Eren is doing is a meh from me because I know why (or at least think I know why lol) he's doing it, its for the people he holds dear, and even then, he left a crucial choice to Yimr in this episode out of the understanding he had for her. I can see why he does the things he does, its not about whether I think its good/bad, but more so seeing where actions are coming from, not excusing the actions themselves. As I said, I can't really see Eren as a evil and sure there is bias there but Bias or not is somewhat irrelevant since bias in itself isn't bad, its the absence of recognizing it. He could be seen as Villian that has done good things, or a Hero that has done bad things, its hard for me to just outright see him boxed into 1 label but I can see how others can. Hope that somewhat gets my thoughts on Eren at the time out a bit more since a bunch was cut out of the end discussion for time sake lol.

as much as i disagree with the rumbling, it's such a pleasure to have eren on screen. he steals every scene he's in, his character arc is fantastically written, and he doesn't fall into the usual villain tropes of being deluded, or "muh bad childhood", or 'for the greater good' bullshit- he knows exactly what he's doing, he knows exactly the consequences, and he knows it makes him a monster. he just doesn't care. every scene he has is so chilling, and every bit, from his design to his voice acting, is perfection

Having the name Ymir in this show just means you're destined for suffering Eren to Annie in the S1 finale: What are you fighting for? What great cause could justify killing so many people? Reiner to Eren in S4 Ep 17: What are you fighting for? And then he says Eren is the worst person to have this power an episode later. Which is fitting because Eren is about to kill a bunch of people. He's turned into what he couldn't understand a few years back. Now we've finally seen the true history. It was a mix of both Eldian and Marleyan truth. Ymir did build stuff, but she also destroyed and crushed a lot of things and people too. And her descendants then did the same as well. Time to play devil's advocate for a bit. A lot of people always seem to think the Marleyan-Eldian conflict happened 2000 years ago. While yes, that is correct that it began 2000 years ago, it only ended recently, about a hundred years ago. Meaning the Eldians basically subjugated and destroyed the world for 1900 years. The Marleyans who currently are alive probably had Grandparents or Great-Grandparents who were subject to the Eldian Empire. And the stories of fear and hatred were passed down. Which is why the world hates Eldians. In war, things usually end with both parties coming to an agreement to not cause further destruction. But Karl Fritz didn't do that. He decided he didn't want to be that guy and his response to his people causing 1900 years of suffering was basically, "Sorry about all that. Promise we won't do it again." But he also threatened them with the Rumbling, pushing that same fear and rage onto future generations, running from the conflict and wiping people's memories. Some people like to sit on a moral high horse, but if someone tormented your family, friends, and everyone you knew for 2000 years throughout multiple generations, and their only response was saying sorry, you probably wouldn't be like, "Oh. They were just in a silly goofy mood. I guess we should just relax". That doesn't mean treating Eldia like how they were treated is right. And doing what happened to them to the rest of the world also isn't right. But the show brings up a few interesting themes. And one of those is becoming like your enemy. Hange noticed that she and the Government were becoming exactly like the same people they fought so hard to take down 4 years ago. People mistreat Marleyans and treat them like servants on the Island. Pixis notices that Yelena and the Jaegerists are putting armbands on people and isolating them like Marley did. And Marley became what Eldia once was. So the question arises. If you're so determined to defeat your enemy that you lose yourself and become exactly like them, do you still consider that to be a victory?

You remember right before Eren acquired the drip-jacket with the Jaegarists, he kept looking in the mirror and telling himself he had to fight? Hange steps into the room to question him about it, and he flips out on her. He keeps asking what her great big plan is, what solution she has, and it seems so out of place given how subdued he is for most of this season. He was asking Hange, for something, anything that he could do rather than this. And Hange had nothing, so it's Rumbling time. What's also real fucked up is, we now know that every time that someone transforms into a titan, Ymir has had to hand craft them the body they used. Think about every time you've seen a titan transformation in this show, and that it's just one person with a bucket having to build all of them. Especially when two or more of the Nine end up fighting each other, and they transform multiple times in a row. It's just been one girl with a bucket, stuck in a place where time is infinite and instant, slowly building them by hand. Every Eldian that got injected, every Eldian Zeke spiked with his spinal fluid and screamed at, every time one of the Nine transforms. It was bad enough when we found out that they're all just people who've had this done to them. But now we find out it's their distant ancestor having to build them a cage of flesh to roam around in, and she does the repairs? AoT serves up intergenerational trauma and straight out fucked up on top of each other like they're making 100 layer sadness lasagne.

I love Eren as a character. I think his development is both realistic and is perfect. The fact that you can look back at his childhood, and see the signs of his psychopathy masterfully ties into what's happening now. I understand where and how he came to his conclusion. Despite this, I do hate Eren for what he is doing, but I love him as a character at the same time. There is no justification for Genocide, there is no debate in that. Ones enjoyment of a character, and one agreeing with a characters actions and beliefs are two separate things. Eren a monster that needs to be stopped, though that won't stop me from absolutely loving him.

You've finally made it. Armins prophecy has come true... "You must discard your humanity, in order to change anything". Eren is the literal definition of a walking contradiction isn't he? A person who is all about the obsession of freedom has begun the most horrific act... Taking away everyone else's. He's so selfish and selfless at the same time and that is why he is an incredible character. I've long thought that Eren was the reincarnation of Ymir's will. An embodiment of her internal desires that she repressed in her existence. That is why Eren is truly special. Why he desires and is so hell bent because he is the living embodiment of Ymir's regrets and desire for freedom and a changed world. Also the full circle on the Attack Titan and Founding Titan these last two episodes is a special level of writing. To have one being defined and enslaved by it's past while being seemingly all powerful by changing the circumstance of an entire race of people on a whim to be outdone by a being defined and enslaved by it's future (who also controlled the outcome of races though a different method of power) are incredible parallels. The fact that the Attack Titan closes the inevitable loop the creation of the Founding Titan brought into existence by being it's literally antithesis... Is just chef's kiss. I literally could go on and on about how the 100s of circles of themes that were closed (or continued) with these 2 episodes giving birth to one of the greatest stories I've ever witnessed in modern media.

It seems to me from the episode title and the contents of the episode itself that everything has been converging on Eren. Eren seems to be the embodiment of everything Ymir couldn't be in her life. It's like whatever seed within her that yearned for freedom blossomed in Eren in the most drastic way. That would explain why even from the youngest age Eren had this burning fire in him that could not be subdued. He is Ymir's vengeance on this cruel world

Eren saved Ymir. He acknowledged her humanity, the first time for her. He wants to end the world created by King Fritz. Children eating parents through the generations and the ages. Eren wants to end all the hatred by the xenophobic world that wanted to kill them all in Paradis. Bertholdt told Armin they all had to die, and too bad. Eren wants to save his people at the cost of the cruel world. Too bad for any other innocents but the world and the system is the one that put them up for choice. And Eren chooses to survive.

I have a theory that when Eren touched the smiling titan in season 2. That hes not the one who commanded the titans to eat her necessarily. But that she commanded them. Basically what if mindless titans are all thinking "Kill me" like the human inside is so miserable they want to die. But since only eren has founding and she is royal blood she got her wish.

Nevermind, if I was in Eren's shoes....I think I'd pick Genocide over the whole world then have my own people slaughtered. Don't know if it's confirmed, but it would make a lot of sense if Eren showed Grisha the memory of Dina eating Carla in order for him to give the founder to Eren as one last push. Eren was withholding memories from Grisha for his own gain and this would make sense as an explanation of how Grisha told Zeke to stop Eren and yet gave him the Founder after anyway.
