Well to be fair to Reiner he only does it after Armin start screaming that "his best friend died" as a ploy to confuse Annie. At this moment the "let's pretend we might be Eren so we don't get killed" switch to a "let's pretend Eren is dead so this titan looses it's objective" so there is no need for them to hide their faces anymore. So it's not really a hint.

To be fair it makes more sense for it to be that quick. Until Annie's reveal, Eren was thought to be an anomaly... Suddenly, if Annie can be a titan too, it means that at least any abnormal titan behavior could hint as a human inside a titan, and it wouldn't have took really long for Hange to understand that Colossal and Armored were people. And if you understand that, you start to understand much more about what is happening. So even if Reiner / Bertholdt didn't slip up in the long range mission, they wouldn't have been able to hide much longer what they were. It was a smart move to move that quick, and gamble on the chaos.

@@gerardlacroix6015 I mean, they started suspecting the other cadets as soon as Eren was revelead, the expedition they went on was baiting him out hoping for the colossal or armored to show up, the misinformation about Eren was less about protecting him and more about narrowing down any leaks within the scouts. Even while the fight against Annie happened, the other cadets were isolated and their backgrounds checked up on. This is why Sasha carried the information about Reiner and Bertholdt to Hange, even while it was overshadowed by the new attack.

But Isayama later changed it and when he wondered what would the Colossal holder look like he made him taller, so it would be more "obvious" he is the Colossal one :D :) I'm glad he changed it.
