LOL i 100% agree and relate to that my dear. Let me clarify 1 thing though. It's not necessarily that you have to be doing "so many different nursing jobs", its more so that you have to do SO MUCH MORE WORK and SO many more HOURS, AND while possibly having to do alotta running around from this place to that place, on top of that. Different nurses do different combinations of the above, might even be able to do it with just 1 job, but the end result is the same, that in the end it took SO so SO much extra work, SO many extra hours, SO much extra stress and BS. Then another variable in the equation is.....WHERE do these 100k nurses LIVE? Pay can be DRAMATICALLY different depending on not only the company or facility, but even more so depending on the city and state. And what A LOT of these 100k nurses are leaving out, is they're working in a very high paying city/ state....and that higher pay is an ILLUSION, because where they live also has a HIGHER COST OF LIVING, which negates that extra pay (which makes it an ILLUSION, yea theyre making more..but paying much higher bills and other expenses there). Where as, as an NP, you can work NORMAL hours, much less PHYSICAL work, WHILE working in a place with a lower pay/ lower cost of living, and still make around what the "100k nurses who are KILLING themselves to get it" (lol) make and more. Then even MORE if you go into things like ER NP, Psych NP, and CRNA (which pays the most by far), Psych NP is second in pay (but you HAVE to have a talent and interest for that, it's absolutely not something that any and everyone can nor SHOULD, just go into..just because it pays good or just because they're "curious", or just because they want to try something new.........no. The other specialty's, you can do that. With that said, the schooling itself, CRNA is far far harder, so for that reason that would also have to be a specialty someone really likes/ interested in, to get through that rigorous CRNA schooling. FNP is on the lower end of pay (just like for MD's, their family medicine speciality IS the absolute lowest paying MD speciality), except with NP....specialties that dont have dedicated programs and established roles yet (Like Cardiology, surgery, neurology, etc etc etc), those will probably also not pay that much (yet), maybe even less than FNP, rarely do you see people go into being NP's in those areas, but when they do, they get FNP 1st, then go work under a Physician in those other specialties/ areas and have that physician train them. Those other non-established NP specialty's will also have a much much much smaller scope of practice no where near similar to the MD counterparts (where as FNP has a very close scope of practice to Family Medicine MDs), Psych NP's almost have equal scope to Psychiatrists MD, and CRNA's have equal training, equal skill, and in some places have equal scope of practice (all of which is helping them get paid the most, and almost as much as MD's). For those of you do WHO want to be something like a Cardiology NP, Neuro NP, and other NP's that aren't yet established, they eventually WILL be in the future, so definitely start with becoming an FNP, like i said above, you can already become FNP and then work in those areas, it's just that in the future there will then be dedicated programs, and laws and legislature that get those NP's their expaned scopes of practice and increased pay and established role, and etc, so dont wait until then, become FNP now, and then branch into that later from FNP. Eventually, 1 day, NP's will make just as much as MD's, then the money difference from RN will be even more tremendous lol. With that said, the nurses who try to speak against it is either because they're COMPLETELY oblivious and ignorant about it all. Or because they're JEALOUS! They want to do it, but for whatever reason think or know that they cant (be it money reasons, or they think or know they aren't smart and talented enough), and they don't want you to do it, and want you to stay down with them. TRUE and LITERAL "crabs in a bucket". This is also why I advise any and everyone (including yall above), to VERY carefully and thoroughly assess people you come across 1st, to see if they're the type who will be happy and positive about hearing that you want to or plan to become an NP. Don't freely share that info. Even worse, some will even work to try and sabotage it/ you (especially coworkers/ supervisors/ managers/ bosses, and especially if YOU are a female, regarding other female coworker/ bosses/ etc, this stuff happens much more among females, just the reality of it- so act/ move accordingly). Lets go yall, yall can do it! :-)

I'm a Family Nurse Practitioner and definitely went into the profession to have my own autonomy because I knew I wanted to be my own boss and establish my own practice one day. I knew I didn't want to do bedside my entire nursing career. It's crazy who some of these places will try to low ball NPs knowing we worked hard and obtained the necessary training and education to be where we're at. I feel so fulfilled in my job role as an FNP and can't wait to have my own clinic one day!

But inevitably nurses now tell me, "oh you're not making a lot of money, we're making about the same amount". And in my head I think where are you working because I never made that amount as a RN.

Awesome advice! I decided to go to FNP school right after graduating with my RN degree and everyone told me not to do it... "it will be too hard", "it's oversaturated" I've heard it all. Now, I'm almost at graduation and I'm sooo glad I didn't listen to those who tried to discourage me. It's absolutely worth it!!

Glad you pursued your dream. NP job market is extremely oversaturated. They are paid low with few hours available to work. A lot of them are still struggling for hours with RNs.

Aspiring FNP here. I actually had someone tell me to not do it because primary care is pointless ("people don't change"). Yeah a lot of people don't mention how in order to make as much as an NP you have to do something (several somethings!) a lot more stressful: travel nursing (get all the bad cases and often no stability - no contract = no money), a hella lot of overtime, and endless red tape and micromanaging at a big hospital (Kaiser) with a lot of red tape (not to mention twelve hour shifts only work for you when you're still young). And THANK YOU for mentioning the physical labor aspect. I worked at an LTAC and money was decent but my back was hurting within the year moving comatose patients.

I’m so happy I found your channel. I’ve been a BSN RN for 15 years and I always wanted to pursue my FNP. I’m so burned out as a bedside nurse. I’ve been a traveling nurse, home health field nurse and manager as well as work with an agency while having a full-time job. You’re absolutely right...a nurse will tell you she makes 80K a year but forgets to tell you how many jobs or overtime hours she worked. Straight out of school, I took my boards and got licensed, then landed an offer from my first job interview with the company I dreamt to work for. All this happened within 2 months after graduating. The cherry on top was that the salary was way more than what other places offered and way more than I anticipated!

Very good video. Thank you. I've been a nurse for 20 years and have decided to go back to school to become a NP. In fact I'm currently in my first semester. I've heard several comments from people I work with that are in-line with what you shared in the video and your responses to those comments are absolutely 100% accurate. Front line staff nurses working 40 hours per week are not making anywhere near NP salaries in my home state. Where I live there is no shortage of NP positions and although there is quite a range in salaries being offered for these positions, I don't think a NP should accept anything less than 100k/yr, even as a new grad. Most newer NPs that I know were able to negotiate salaries in the range of 100,000 - 107,000 as new grads. A good friend of mine is a NP and works 3 days per week, 9 hours per day and earns $120,000 / yr. Being a NP is a tremendous responsibility and requires a great deal of training, so you should be compensated accordingly.

NP's does have tremendous responsibilities and the compensation sometimes for some don't add up. I think because a lot of nurses work lots of OT or do travel nursing, so when they start to compare those salaries with NP they think it's not enough.

I’m in Michigan too. Less than two years into nursing and I worked my butt off to make 80k last year. OT every week. The only floor nurses I know making 100k a year have been at the hospital for 20+ yrs and still work OT to make that much. Going back to NP school in May :) This was so encouraging to hear!

I became an NP for the exact same reason you did. I was breaking my back as an ICU nurse. I feared getting a substantial injury. Although I'm not sure I'd say I regret becoming an NP, my first job kept pushing me to see more and more patients with no additional compensation. Our EMR is slow and terrible, so sometimes I am charting until 10:00 or 11:00 at night, so I feel like I went from 3 12-hour days to 5 14-hour days!. Not worth it!!! I have opted not to renew my contract, and hopefully I will find something better where I can actually be done with my day by 5:00pm. Thanks for the video! I enjoyed it!!

Location, experience and certification matters. An RN in a small town like ocala will make $20 however in NYC starting for LPN is $33. Just research.

Here in Miami, it is very congested and every nurse and their Momma want to be a Nurse practitioner. Right before the pandemic, I was looking for a preceptor and was not getting any cooperation. Then the pandemic happened and everyone was working from home and some practitioners had the nerve to be charging large sums of money to precept. I got frustrated and changed my tract from FNP TO Education.

I do want to become a NP but i am having trouble deciding on my specialty. I have 7 years of med surg/step down experience. I am definitely going to miss bedside care, but the physical demand is RIDICULOUS. ( teching for 10 years started in high school). I am tiirreedd. As of right now i am pursuing msml and then mba. I am leaning towards fnp to give me a little breathing room and to make it off of the floor. You are so right. I am a travel nurse and you have to work hard for that money!!!

Actually you get more connection with physician in the SNF and as a ADON you will interact more with these physician have a relationship which can turn into a job opportunity for you when you are done with school.... Have you ever work in SNF?

It was worth it in terms of knowledge and experience to be gained. I am a new np of 3 month working in Michigan, originally from Jamaica. It scares me to round at the hospital because I am a long term care np. But as with anything that you try that new, that feeling is normal. Fromcnatonp Yeah for sure! I know what an np does but I have heard for some people, that all you do is check emails, check in with your patient’s, go see them, etc. but is that really the case? Because I don’t want to sit at a desk all day just checking emails and patients! 😂

Good info! While living in NYC, there was no incentive to start practicing because the bedside salaries were so high (80-100k+ w/o OT, chop 40% off in taxes) and for whatever reason "some" NP salaries were lowish. Since relocating to the DMV, and having sticker shock to not only no salaried positions, but super low hourly rates, everything you mentioned it exact. The advanced degree is appreciated, and you are compensated accordingly. All in my opinion.

Again, you keep it real...as a new NP I took a “pay cut” (but not really) as a 15 yr RN I made a lot of money but.....I worked my 3 days a week and worked prn in PACU at night, and worked prn at another hospital in our system... I worked 9 yrs in cvicu and then worked as a house supervisor. I now have 17 months under my belt as a new NP and my base is what i was making working all those prn side gigs. I think overall I’m happy with my decision to become a NP but at first I wasn’t sure. Ike you I was tired of the physical demands of the bedside nursing role but really enjoy patient care and teaching. I think long term the NP role is a terrific decision because of the opportunities that are available!

This is why I am so hesitant of becoming a nurse is the physical demand, its a lot. I have thought about nursing long and hard, I have a bachelors in pre-medicine, however I thought maybe nursing may be a good stepping stone into the medical profession. unfortunately so much is put on nurses, and for this reason I decided to go in a different direction.

I live in California and I do make “NP money” as a nurse. I work in oncology it is high stress and emotionally/physically draining. I literally see older nurses limping and rubbing their aches and pains. If I leave my current position to work in another hospital I’d have to work my butt off to make my same salary. I want a better quality of life, I gotta work smarter not harder.

Great video. Straight to the point. No absolutes spoken. I make great pay as a RN by taking call …, (in Florida) I do find that my place of employment is less demanding than private hospitals. I work mon-friday no weekends, no holidays 7-3:30 in the OR. I truly enjoy my job! the call is for past 3:30 cases and emergencies. No level 1 trauma here. So it’s possible to make the $$$ without sacrificing your home life. When i took this job it wasn’t the highest pay out there but the life style sold me… without me knowing it, the call took me over what i expected! So it’s possible. However, i am ready for a new experience so NP here i come. And if i can stay in the OR .. i would❤️

From your accent I could tell you are Jamaican. I know more Jamaican nurses go to the USA than here in Canada. My pay here without a ton of overtime( I think I did overtime 4 or 5 times for the year) is just over 95,000 CAN before taxes. Last year I got over 100,000 for the first time in my career after working over 20 years. The problem is we pay a lot in taxes. I find people don't complain much about taxes here . Its just recently I hear more complaints about pay , taxes etc. I think because housing prices have gone up significantly in the cities, plus inflation and the government has frozen salary to 1 % increase which is nothing. Generally before all this ,a nurse can buy a nice house on her own and live pretty descent life without working tons of extra time. NP's here get more to start but can still work less overall in comparison to other nurses who do OT etc. We are due for a descent pay increase , so will see what happens.

Experience is equal to salary. I've been a nurse for 12 years, and my salary is $100,000 plus excellent benefits. When I started, I was making $65,000. I work in the medical-surgical department, and I don't do overtime. Brand new nurses in New York (the city pays more) are making $75,000 to $95,000. Depending on the salary, I don't think I 'd benefit from becoming a nurse practitioner (NP) if I were to leave the hospital. If I left the hospital and worked as an NP, I would be losing out. Although I'm thinking about it because I don't want to do bedside nursing when I'm older. Maybe my experience as a nurse might count for something. Some people have the wrong reasons to come into nursing. I love what I do. Despite my decent salary, they still can't pay me enough for what I do.

hey, fromcnatonp thanks for this video. I'm actually thinking of taking up NP. I'd like to ask what's your estimated gross salary this year and how many days a week you work? just for reference if it is possible. btw, I netted(from January 2020 up to date) about 100k(135-140k gross). I worked full time + registry in AZ from January till May then I moved to LA and worked travel/registry. I do work 4-6days in ICU/ED. I'm expecting to earn more next year because the ICU offers have been crazy high in LA(plus I won't be working in AZ anymore, the pay is substantially low compared to LA). I already found a school but I'm not sure if it is worth it.

So many good points. In considering getting my undergraduate degree in a non nursing field and doing a direct entry MSN or PA program. My interests just fall more in line with science and clinical medicine as opposed to the physical demands of a typical RN. My step mom makes about 150 grand a year as a ICU RN, but the hours and physical demands are taking the toll after more than ten years in the field. She is looking into MSN programs now because she can make the same yearly salary for less hours a week. I think being a RN is one of the hardest and most commendable of jobs, but I personally would want to diagnose, prescribe, and educate as opposed to do bedside care. If I do get my RN, I know I'll want to go back almost immediately for an advanced degree because I know I would get burnt out fast.

Girl what you said! Nursing is so demanding. I have been debating for 2 years whether I wanted to go back. I have been watching KZbin videos NP vs CRNA. All I know is I gotta pick one, I been nursing 16 years and bedside nursing aint it. Corporate America could care less about us and as a nurse you have to do what is best for you! I used to see older nurses walking all humpback and with a limp nah, I'm not going out like that. I die on the job all they gone do is step over my body and hire somebody else for that same position.

Experience is key with nursing. I'm not a NP, but I work one job making over $100,000 with full benefits & not as a med/surg, ICU nurse, or NM. I've been at my job over 15 years & it's taken time to grow, but you have to find your niche. It's been over 10 years since I've worked overtime. I teach on the side just for experience, but that's just extra & still is not apart of my baseline. Many opportunities for nurses.

Absolutely correct that experience is key! however, I worked with nurses who were at my hospital for 20yrs and their pay was cap and it was barely $40/hr, I find that when nurses move around to different hospital with experience their pay increase more so than when they stay at one hospital which is crazy bc many do not want to job hop.
