Are you currently a nurse and you are not sure what APRN degree to choose from? Well you are not alone!
In today's video I am sharing my thoughts on the CRNA role vs the Nurse Practitioner role and why I chose NP over the high salary of being a CRNA. I am a former ICU nurse and many have the notion that if you work ICU you automatically want to attend CRNA school. Not the case! I am talking all about both of these roles.
Also this video will be a two part series, I have a friend who is a CRNA so if you have any questions about the CRNA please leave them in comments so that we will include them in the next video. Thanks for watching!

Don't pick your career based on money. While being a CRNA looks very attractive in regards to salary, studies have shown that money can only buy satisfaction and that begins around $75k/year. Money won't buy someone happiness. Also, if you're grinding as an NP you can make comparable money. Do some shadowing of both. This is the greatest advice someone can give you. I shadowed CRNAs and didn't like the workflow. NP was the right choice for me, so that is what I did. Do what is best for you and your happiness. Go put in the hours shadowing and you'll know what to do.

do people usually shadow when they’re already a nurse? i know a CRNA and i’ve been wanting to ask if I could shadow them but i’m not sure when the best time is to ask. i’m still doing my prereqs for nursing school, should i wait till i’m about to graduate with my BSN to ask?

I love putting IV’s in and I love sedated patients. I was always on the fence about going to NP school because I didn’t think I’d like seeing pts everyday. This might sound cold but I don’t want small talk, hand holding all day with patients. I want to be technical and do mechanical skills. I like to comfort my pts and do the best job I can for them but If I could do all the skills stuff all day I’d be happy 😃

Nope does not sound cold at all. I totally understand I am a former ICU nurse who had pt sedated 90% of the time. Best of luck to you

As I'm currently procrastinating studying for my nursing school final, I just stumbled across your channel. Now I cannot stop watching your videos. I'm very glad I found your channel because it nice hearing from someone who sounds real and not just posting to post. As in, it is very evident that you make videos with the intent to inform students/future students and not just become a youtube nurse. I really enjoy your videos and look forward to more. (after finals lol)

Thank you for sharing your experiences. One thing you can do as an FNP is a 1 year fellowship as ENP, and get certified so you can work in the ER, that might be a way to combine both FNP and ICU training without doing a whole post masters certificate course.

Thanks for sharing this Laurie. I personally was on the fence between FNP, CRNA and PMHNP. The keyword you said here was that you found out that crna was just not a good fit for you after doing your research. I ended up choosing FNP after almost 2years of indecisiveness and thorough research.

Really interesting video! Its kind of shocking how different the entry requirements for NP school are in the US compared to Australia. Here you need minimum postgraduate cert or diploma, 2 years in your specialty field, and another 2 years at an advanced clinical level in the same specialty to even apply.

Hi Lori! couple questions for crna . How do you choose the right school? What are some of the legalities and accountabilities in regards to practicing as a crna and is it different that being an np? is it’s better to practice independently as a crna or take the team approach as some hospitals offer ? Last question , am I able to do prerequisites before crna school?

@fromcnatonp

No you need acute care certification to be an acute care NP. There are some areas in the hospital that does hire FNP like the trauma service but if you want to work in the hospital you need to go to school for AGACNP. I explain more in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppzSpphnncyhgtk

@fromcnatonp

Well, I have many however, I do not want to be bias bc most of my knowledge comes from hear say. I have never worked in the health care system in Jamaica, however my mom was a nurse in Jamaica and lets just say when we do visit she has a lot to say about what is happening especially in our home town of Portland. Are you living in Jamaica or US? and what are your thoughts?

No comparison. CRNA is trained and more knowledgeable than NP And the Crna is trained by doctors. Icu nurse becomes NP and can’t read an EKG. NOT ALL BUT MOST.
