Ostrich male skin colour changes when they are ready to mate. I remember the info visiting an ostrich farm. I have noticed that Carl's legs are red. This is the indicator. In ostrich farming, a man cannot enter a field with a male ostrich in heat, but women can. It is linked to hormones.

You took the words out of my mouth. I just said to my self this is journey. I second thought this out because Of the memories of our precious Baby Journey. And didnt want to add to sadness.. But each baby little or large that Comes to the SANUTARY does have its own journey. Yes it's a learning process. Even for us that follows IMA DONKEY SANITARY. I'm so glad I can tune in the videos that you all share with us. Thank you so much for sharing. Lester and Jamie I'm sure you have I hope you reach out to vets that handle large animals and work with these beautiful animals. I lived on a farm. Our vet worked with tiny baby's to large baby's. However he also became the Kansas City Mo Zoo Vet. I have known him since I was a little. I'm 69. He is in his 80s I've watch the gentleness he uses with the animals. He's the Best. My mother always told us to be gentle to the animal. Carl has been a great addition to you all. You have done a lot with him in a couple of weeks. One thing for sure watching you how you handle him is amazing. When I was a teen and in 4-H I got a hereford cafe bigger than me. Maybe close to Pearls size but no horns. That ment roping her, getting drugged, taming her, and have her ready for the fairs. Training a wild calf wasn't easy. Kinda like watching a western. This calf wasn't born on the farm. We bought her from another farmer. Like I said you all have come a long ways with Carl in two weeks. CONGRATULATIONS. Thank You for Sharing All the Videos With Us.

Lester letting Carl peck on his hand, is establishing the pecking order. Carl dosen't wish to be grabbed by his neck or touched just yet. Waiting to develop trust can take awhile. Carl is adjusting, dealing with the stresses and anxieties of his new life. His neck is where he is vulnerable, and constantly grabbing for it, stresses Big Bird. Lower voices, walking with, not at, keep your hands to yourself, always have a treat or reward, and let time turn things around.

The squatting down and rolling from side to side is a mating dance/ritual seen on many videos about ostriches. Carl's doing pretty good considering what he's going through physically (hormones etc) but also moved to a new location with different animals, sights and smells. Hard to imagine that he's only been there two weeks, feels more like two months the way he's relaxed into all the changes he's experienced and he's been so aware of the other animals and where it's safe for him to set those big talons of his.
