Lots of information on Ostrich on KZbin, hosing down, bathing, watering, temperament. A kiddie bath tub with water? Who knows he may like your pond area. They eat locusts, lizards, snakes and rodents, although they prefer plants - especially roots, seeds and leaves. Carl could help with your rodent problems and snakes. When he gets used to being at the sanctuary and he realizes that you are not going to hurt him he will settle down and start interacting with you guys and get used to the other animals and not see them as a threat. Please be sure that no one decides to go in and run with him or tries to catch him to love on him, because he will perceive it as a threat to himself and he will try to protect himself and he will hurt someone and not mean to. Jami I think he will be a fantastic addition to the farm after he adjusts to everyone and everything around him and become a loving protector like Granny Annie. Jami, it already looks like Carl picked you just like the geese, ducks, and chickens. Birds need a calm but confident leader (like most heard animals) and Carl senses that. Also his demeanor isn’t reading aggression to me. It’s reading “I’m kinda nervous in a new environment, are you friendly? Look, I can look big and flashy. Are you impressed?” Which is similar to what the horses were doing when Carl first arrived in the pasture. Just letting Carl know they’re big, strong, and flashy too.

Fun story. I was volunteering in South Africa and on the neighboring farm there was an ostrich. It came up to the fence while I was working and started doing a mating dance. It was amazing and hilarious. I think he was confused. lol

Jami, you might want to put a kiddie pool in his pasture by were he paces. They lay down with their feet in front of him. And the water will cool him off, but also maybe help clean his leg and chest wounds....and give him a drink. I believe if you stay calm and stop yelling at him (I know your joking, but tone wise it's intimidating to young tiny eared bird brains.) Keep singing, he seemed intrigued while you were singing. PLEASE TAKE YOUR EARRINGS AND SHINY JEWELERY OFF in his paddock. He will possibly go for your shiny earrings and accidentally hurt you ripping it out of your ear. I think you need to both be his people, when Lester feeds him you feed him as well. Bring him a watermelon. Watch those toes while your with him!!! Perhaps a super soaker gun with alcohol and water aimed at his wounds from a far until you can get close to him. Can't wait to see what doc Priestley has to say!!!! Lol! Jami, I'm from South Africa 🇿🇦 where ostriches are native from. They can be VERY territorial especially if a female is involved and they won't think twice to attack humans either. They kick forward as they are running and use the power of their speed and the size of their talons to stomp on the threat and kill/causes damage.

Carl was raised by humans from birth and grew up with some farm animals as well. He’s been around humans , around pigs and dogs . He will be fine and so far it does not mean Carl fits this box is a “dangerous animal” . Many animals are capable of major damage . Dogs and call people too. Just because an animal is capable of doing something , it does not mean that he will behave in such a way. It will be best to of course keep an eye on him to learn his behavior , temperament, etc. Carl’s history isn’t of aggression . Aside from fighting with another male ostrich for the one female. Jamie and Lester will be fine.

Lol, Jami, you totally crack me up... you know in his video of Carl becoming a Little... Lester says, "You can tell the character of a man by the way he treats kids and animals"....as he's laying on the ground snuggling Trudy and Carl is looking at him like "This dude is Nuts." At least his mid life crisis is a loving gentle caring crisis. Honestly I think it is less of a mid life crisis and more of a hole in his heart from losing Journey.... You're lucky to have a man with such a large heart, even if it means life is a little crazy.
