The 730 is cool grew up around one in the 70s ours was pony start. Nothing like the sound of 2 cylinder engine pulling hard plowing. Dad had a R diesel also at same time. Thanks for showing us yours. Love your channel. I'm retired mechanic worked 40 years for hwy contractor mostly cat scrapers and equipment WI.

We had a 70 diesel, and an R. I was loading gravel with the 70 and almost killed it, the fly wheel rocked back and it started running backwards, blew the oil out of the air cleaner.

Enjoyed watching YOU work on the Dodge, Jeff, I have a 95 same color scheme but regular cab. Watching you crawl around under there without jack stands under the frame made me very nervous though. 50 some years ago when I was a young lad in the field test department at New Holland we were doing cycle time tests on a new combine with a 6 row corn head (big stuff in those days). I was standing next to the feeder house between the tire and the header with a stop watch so I could see when the lift cylinder was at each end of the stroke. With the engine at full throttle the operator raised the header and just as the header hit the top the hose broke and header dropped right now. Other than being covered in hydraulic oil I wasn't hurt, but I was a little shook. It left a lasting impression on me and I have never trusted a hydraulic system since! Listening to you and Mr. Griffey grading on the 730 at the end calmed my nerves considerable!

Quad4x4 did the Getrag to NV4500-HD conversion on my 1st gen (in other words, I've been there!). He's in the Beartooth range, or very near it, S and W of Billings. I was glad to hear that he's still there! I've had no problems whatsoever, with that transmission or his installation of it. That was ... cheezits! 20 years ago! Most people go through multiple transmissions and rear ends in the time I've owned this truck. Well, that's what you get when you get a work horse and treat it like a race horse. A few years earlier, I replaced all U-joints in the front drive system. I went over several diagrams of that Dana 60 front end, and never could locate a seal for those front axle shafts. It never has leaked (and yes, unlike a few I know, I do check the oil). My problem with that started with a hub lock that didn't release, and I didn't catch it until the U-joint was ruined. When I went in to replace that one, I replaced them all, all the way back to the transfer case. Original U-joints had injected plastic retainers. Best way to remove them was to cut the cross out with a torch. By then, the plastic is melted and you can knock the caps out with ease.

I've always wondered why they didn't have some kind of seal to keep the grime out of the inside of those axle housings. I have a 95 dodge 2500 with the not so powerful 12 valve, same thing happened a couple weeks ago. Bad u-joints and seals puking oil but the stub shafts were good . Should be good for another 280k!
