yes this noise, sounded the exact same and was the front diff. Felt like a grinding that slowed the truck down. Fixed at dealer under warranty and can finally drive around without sounding like I'm piloting a rock tumbler.

Is this referring to the low washing noise? I’ve been trying to determine some clanking on my ‘10 tundra and have no luck. Three years and four mechanics can’t give me a good idea. My rear diff is definitely getting worn but I can’t find anything online for the same noise. Press the gas one clank, let go, two clanks. Sometimes it ratchets. I joke that my truck wants to be a drummer too but hell....

just to let some know, I started to get a little noise in front plus what felt like very rough idle when accelerating with little thumping, knocking, and vibration. Pulled into my drive up onto sturdy ramps I built, looking at everything that bolts or has rubber bushings or mounts, found my problem by pushing and pulling on different places. Turned out to be transfer case bolts were starting to loosen. this was on my 97 suburban, But my sons 07 Ford explorer had the loud hum or screaming like 2 pieces of metal grinding against each other, his was front differential bearing.

No, just putting a differential in neutral doesn’t mean the gears in the case aren’t turning. If your wheels are rolling the gears are turning just not the transmission.

GoneProHero2 Dude don't lie. Toyota parts are superior quality. Toyota bearings and stuff don't go bad that's why they are famous for reliability. I have never heard of a Toyota axle or wheel bearing going bad.

@@allsuccess4546 Yeah so get this, it wasn't the differential. It was the CV joint on the passenger side that failed. While I had that done, i changed the lower and upper control arms, both sides, the struts and strut mounts both sides. Riding beautiful until the NYC roads beat the crap out of it again.

This just sealed the deal my friend. I replaced the tensioner pulley, idler pulley but it continued and got worse. Next I changed the front passenger hub assembly. Still had the noise. I changed the drivers side hub assembly. I just swapped out the fan clutch tonite and now I just watched your video. This is exactly the noise that I refer to as the "rotating screech of death" Thanks for posting this. What was the remedy ?

my transfer case up front is making noises and it doesnt sound like yours . mine is a constant howl that increases with speed . if you notice your sound does not coincide with your wheel speed it is delayed in comparisson to the wheel turning . I think it is your wheel bearing because the bearings rotate slower than the outside of the wheel does turn . that should be the different grinding noise compared to the wheel and shafts turning . my guess .

Have you found out what is causing the noise? I have a 2005 Chevy 1500 and when ever I hit 50 mph a low howl kicks in and I can almost feel it and won't go away until I drop below 35. Every mechanic shop I have taken it to can not figure out what is wrong.

You deffinitly have a bad wheel bearing . Just purchase the front left and right . Change them . If your cars over 140k miles its time anyways.

I also have had the Howling sound coming from the front of my 2000 Silverado 1500 4x4 5.3 and now the driver side axle seel is leaking. I thank that is why it makes this sound. One thing Id like to point out is that it only makes this sound in 4wheel drive. Does your truck make this sound only in 4wheel drive? Also do you all think that it's my seal that is causing the sound? I'm going to fix this problem tomorrow and I'll let you all know if it goes away.

I thought when chevy silverados or suburbans with rear wheel drive only the rear differential works in normal drive and when 4x4 is engaged the front differential engages, correct me if im wrong please. I had the same noise but it was coming from the front of my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I took it to a ring and pinion shop. The told me it was the carrier bearings. I had them replace all the bearings and the noise is gone. $629 I fix almost anything on my car but with the shims and special tools, I said you fix it LOL I'm glad I did. I know it was done right and with a warranty 6 month or 6k miles not great but not bad. Hope this helps. Remember if the noise gets louder not under load (foot off the pedal) It's a bearing issue

i think this is the 3rd gen 4runner the same suspension set up as the 90 series land cruiser i have. i have front hub locks and when i disengage(free position) the sound goes away so its definitely from the front differential. i have the same sound..i changed the universal join crosses but the sound remains. will have to check oil and pinion bearings.

I have a similar noise on chevy truck, only hear very clear when about 25 mph, did wheels bearings because of leaks front and back no solution, brought to dealer, they changed water pump, still persisted, blamed tires wear due to shocks, upgraded shocks, no solution after 1 year bought new tires, still persists. must be something rotating, hope it's not the differential or transmission

💥Grinding is different than whirring. I have a whirring noise that increases with speed in a 2003 Escalade. 139k miles. Could that also be the front diff.? I just changed the fluid for the first time and found a clump of shavings on the drain plug magnet. Thanks for the great video. 🤟🏼

No mechanics where interested in opening it up and rebuilding it so I bought a used unit from an auto salvage yard for $800 and my regular mechanic installed it for $300. It was much cheaper than having a remanufactured unit installed for $2,300. All is good so far and finally after many years it’s quiet again. 🤟🏼

@@ajangel5703 A mechanic suggested a friction modifier fluid to add to it as an attempt to quiet it down. He said to drive it 50 miles and see if it helps. It did not do a thing. There are several bearings inside that can go bad sometimes which was my case and no fluids where going to quiet mine down. It’s kind of hard to describe the sound in words but I can mimic it with my mouth which won’t help here. lol. Try to hum with your mouth closed starting down low then going up in octaves. That muffled sound is sort of like what mine sounded like and the pitch went higher as I drove faster.

Please help! I have a 2004 GMC Yukon Denali XL. I had the front differential changed with a replacement from a 2003 GMC model. after the guy replaced it, the car is now making a howling noise and clunking noise on the turns. doesn't feel safe to drive at all. he mentioned that because the oil still looks silver it needed to be replaced because the gears are not getting the proper lubrication and needed to be replace with new oil. can someone please shut light on this.

If oil is silver there is a problem(new oil looks like honey). that means oil has metal in it(not wearing properly or something is wearing out). The howling might be wheel bearing or one of the differential bearings. When you remove the differential you also have to remove the CV shaft and joints. The cv goes into the wheel bearing and has quite a bit of force on it. When you take the cv out of the wheel bearing and then re-torque it, it will sometimes ruin your wheel bearing. Had to replace both of mine and my brothers because of this. Test wheel bearings then go form there. Good Luck

Hey, Thanks for your response. Turns out, the guy lied and never replaced anything on the truck. He took the Gears out of the Diff, as a result, it also destroyed my transfer case. The guy disappeared on me. I ended up spending nearly 5k to fix everything! :-(. Now I have a new issue, the Truck is whining loud and leaking oil from the front. The brake peddle also vibrates when I press down on it. SMH! always something!

I think you solve my problem, my mechanic change my front left wheel bearing and that grinding grating sound was still there. I replace the front differential with the used one because the original one was doing the same thing and that's why he thought it was the wheel bearing.

Enmanuel Tavarez Jack up one tire at a time on the lower control arm close to the tire. Then grab the tire at 12 and 6 and also at 3 and 9 and wiggle it(Not roll) the one that moves is the one that is bad.

Take it to a shop to get it diagnosed as not to waste money on maybe this or maybe that! Then... If you're capable... Fix it. Yourself. At least you will know exactly what it is! Only cost about $50 to have a shop diagnose the problem man.

had a loud growling noise in my front end of my 06 dodge it was slop between the intermediate shaft an the CV axel when new had a drive shaft shop center it and weld the intermediate shaft to the CV axel then balanced it no more noise what a cheap an stupid design

Only answer is in the comments. He said it was a rear wheel bearing! I have the exact same noise but assumed it was in the front. I'm checking the rear now by putting it up on a lift and running all 4 to see if it is front or rear. 1999 4runner
