Hello, I was just diagnosed with Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia. My dermatologist has me taking Doxycycline hyclate capsules for three months and using Clobetasol Propionate Ointment. I stopped the Doxycycline hyclate capsules after one month, because my stomach was aways upset. I did not have any pimples but tenderness. I did get a biopsy. My dermatologist did not promise me my hair would grow back. I have a large bald spot in the very front of my head. My hair loss is only in the very top front area. I also have thinning in the crown area. I do have my sides with only a small amount of thinning. I hopeful the Alopecia will stop spreading 😢

It;s good to hear that your have been diagnosed with this condition and started treatment. If you are unable to take doxycycline then the next treatment options could include oral hydroxychloroquine which requires a screening eye exam. Intralesional steroid injections are another option to help with treatment as well. The initial goal of treatment is to stop the inflammation to relieve symptoms such as pain, burning or itching as well as keep the condition from spreading further. Improvement in hair growth can sometimes occur with this regular treatment, however there are other options avilable to help improve hair growth such as oral finasteride reported by Dr. Jeffery Donovan a Canadian dermatologist. I have also had patients notice some improvement in hair growth with Platelet Rich Plasma injections (PRP) for this condition but as you mentioned it's hard to promise that hair will grow back again, but the earlier treatment starts the better the outcome could be. I will work on creating a link to some examples of hair regrowth when this condition has been treated for some of my former patients.

I just got diagnosed with FFA. It started one or two years ago with my eyebrows slowly thinning and over the past few months i started noticing that my edges have also been thinning. My dermatologist has prescribed me a cobletasol 0,05% cream. I hope this help. This is all very concerning to me as I have always had a head full and thick hair. 😢

The reason that a person develops FFA is still too be discovered so it's not really possible to explain why you have it or how to prevent it. In general, the earlier treatment is started then the better the outcome can be so by getting treatment you are moving in the right direction. In addition to clobetasol 0.05% cream, there are other treatment options are available when needed. There seems to be a need for more details about treatments that can be done as well as examples of improvement that is possible so I will work on putting that information together. It's important to stick with your treatment plan and avoid do everything possible to keep the condition under control. I have seen patients disappear after diagnosis and return years later with much more extensive hair loss that might have been prevented if they were more compliant with treatment.

@@NACMHPThank you so much for your reply. It is very comforting. I will stick to the treatment because maintaining my hair and scalp help is very important to me. It would be great to hear about different treatment options including the side effects and pictures. I am 41 years old and I will probably need treatment for the rest of my life 😢. It’s so sad but gotta keep my up! ❤ Thanks Doc!

Are there any creams or ointments that can slow down the progression of the hair loss? 🧬...I don't want to get shots in my scalp. 💉

There are a variety of prescription medications for hair loss that are topical creams, ointments, gels or solutions in addition to oral medications that can be prescribed along with or without injections. The medications used depend upon the diagnosis. As you mentioned some individuals decide not to get scalp injections as part of their treatment program.
