Justine has made an 'Indian Pudding' with the main ingredient being Maize (or Corn) from the cookbook entitled "The American Frugal Housewife" that was published in 1828. To give this simple dish a "Kick in the Breeches" she serves it with some good ol' Jerky... but will Ron like the Cornmeal Entrée?

I agree with how shocking it is when you come across full grown adults in their 20s-30s who don’t know how to do basic household chores. I’m 32 now and by the time I was 10, I was preparing dinner with my mom, mowing the lawn with my dad, folding laundry, vacuuming… basically any chore mom and dad did, I could do it as well or help alongside them. I’m grateful for that.

I lost my mom at 11 and it became my job to do the "womens work". My dad was off the boat italian and my brother was taught to do the "manly" things in the house. When I married for the 2nd time I was blessed with a man that did a ton of housework and after he retired he took on the cooking. I had seven back surgeries and he is a true blessing to me. You are so right about young people and basic household chores. That's fine if you are wealthy but, for the rest of us we have to our own cooking and housework.

Yeah I'm teaching my kids to survive in this world. My son is 7 and he can fold and put away. They both (12 yr old) can put dishes away and wash. They both can vacuum. My oldest can clean bathrooms. Na, basically, when mommy's dead. They need to survive on their own.

I’m 35 now and I’ve seen people in their 20’s now were asked on the streets of a random city by someone who was doing a survey to tell him what time is on this huge face clock ⏰⌚️🕤 & these guys were like uhh 🤔💭…. The most basic common skill, they couldn’t figure out which hand pointed to the hour and which pointed to the minute. If it didn’t show 3:25 then they couldn’t read it. Imagine them trying to read militarily time 17:35 = 5:35pm. They would probably go like 😳🫤🤯🤕 what kind of time is that?? 🤷🏽🤷🏽‍♀️ That’s sad; if they couldn’t pull out their cellphone to tell someone the time they’d be lost. That’s why there’s an app service for everything now too; we’ve become so dependent on robots and devices to do our jobs, shopping, takeout delivery, driving, cleaning, interviews, homework, cheat on tests and so on. The next generation won’t have to physically do anything anymore.

In Scotland we make clootie dumpling which is similar to a Christmas pudding but is cooked in a floured cloth ( cloot) like your pudding. Best bit of it is the thick skin that forms from the flour on the cloot. Have it warm with custard, rum sauce etc and fried for breakfast the next day or just eaten cold. Yum yum 😋

When my Mom's parents moved to a ranch here in Western Montana, there wasn't electricity & they had an outhouse. She told me a bunch of stuff, including details about catalogs, corn cobs, mullen weed & a rooster that used to chase the little "moons" when my Grandma dropped their "trap doors" in their long underwear so the little kids could do their thing😂. I won't ask about your outhouse...🤣🤣🤣

When I was growing up, we had cornmeal mush a lot for supper, especially if mom had her mind on saving up money for something particular, like a chair or something. She would always make enough to have a painful left over for fried mush the next morning. I don't ever remember complaining about it! 😊 You two always have the nicest times together! I'm in my 40s, and I came at the "can't do chores" thing from the other direction, in a sense: I didn't have a dishwasher growing up, and even when we got an actual washer and dryer (we didn't have either when I was little), the washer was from the 70s and the dryer from the 50s -- it was so old it didn't have a lint trap, and eventually it actually caught on fire, so we were back to using clotheslines. When I was first faced with truly modern appliances in my first apartment, I was embarrassingly at sea -- I washed the dishes by hand until I could finally bring myself to admit to my roommate that I'd never used a dishwasher before. At least vacuum cleaners have remained relatively simple, lol.

Oh man. I remember this from my childhood. It was a difference of preference in my family. Molasses, sorghum, honey, or fruit topped like apples or pears. I still remember the sweet buttery and bitter taste of the corn and Molasses. It was more like a basic desert for us. Very nice. Glad to see an appreciation of the simplicity of something. It was not always about the best dinners. Sometimes it was just about the family gathering around the table for discussion and having something to eat while you gather together.

When I was growing up, it was just my mom and I. ( my parents were, divorced ) I had a lot of household chores like doing dishes, taking out the trash, doing my laundry, keeping my room clean, and vacuuming the living room. We lived in a townhouse at the time. I was a latch key kid ( a latch key kid was someone who was old enough to be left at home who didn't have anyone to watch them while the parents or parent was away at work. And being any only child, I had a lot of responsibilities. So it's a shock to me too when someone tells me that they can't do something very basic for every day living. I knew how to write a check in fourth grade. my mom had an accident and couldn't write so she showed me how to write a check.

When Justine was assembling this, I watched and said to myself, "Gawd, I bet she will have to boil this for hours!" Sure enough, she had to! Indian Pudding was served at a few Boston restaurants (like the late, lamented Durgin Park in Quincy Market), but it was made with a lot more molasses, and was served with vanilla ice cream. So good!

My mother used to make a savery suet pudding (made with flour) to go with pot roast. Dessert would be be a slice of suet pudding with the homemade jam mom made in the summer. This is many years ago when jam was topped by in the jar with wax.

Perhaps cover the main dishes with a cheesecloth when the flies are about. How about that!...our mother told us about twisting the apple stem when we were kids too. It was high entertainment to hand out apples for dessert and have us young ones make wishes whilst twisting the stems. Fond memories...thank you for bringing that up Justine! Indian Pudding is made from Indian meal (corn meal). What we Americans call corn (maize) was originally known in English as “Indian corn.” “Corn” was a general term for grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The “corn” introduced to Europeans by Indians (Native Americans) was, therefore, “Indian corn.”

I'm in the UK and I used to eat steamed puddings with custard or cream growing up. You could buy them in a can too but haven't seen them for years. I think we would call the US style modern pudding blancmange, which also I haven't seen for years but not sure. ♥

Y'all are funny. In the south we don't use flour in cornbread. It's corn meal, butter, salt and pepper in a cast iron skillet. Serve with brown been soup. Dip the cornbread in the soup and eat it because it is certainly dense. Add a side of green onions and it's the best thing ever.

I find American modern puddings so funny! Here in Australia we don’t really have those soft puddings. Any pudding we have (most commonly chocolate or plum pudding at Christmas) is like a cake!

Small bowls of Water, dish soap and apple vinegar, attracts and drowns flies. My Daddy was an Oklahoma farmboy in the Dust Bowl era, they STAYED and toughed it out. They would cut a wodge of this type pudding and take it with them to eat in the fields as a snack.

I've always admired you two for all the hard work you do! I'm 68 and grew up in a "working class" family. It was a pleasure for me to help Mom and Dad when I wasn't at school or doing homework. I didn't like scrubbing clothes on a washboard too much. Our ringer washer bit the dust, and it took a while until we could afford a new one. But I really liked hanging the clothes up in the backyard, helping Dad mow or trim bushes (push mower and clippers!) - or helping Mom bake bread, cookies and other nice things. I was four when I first learned to sew. Mom showed me the different stitches to use. In White Plains, NY, a big city where I lived and worked for decades, I saw lots of spoiled young people. Up here in Vermont, there are no "yuppies" or kids with "helicopter parents". Outside of outsiders who own summer homes up here, everybody works hard for themselves and for one another. Now I'm getting old and tired, but I still need to mow the lawn, shovel out in the winter and keep house. Sometimes I let things go - I guess I'm becoming a work wimp!

That's crazy about people having to ask about how to use an out house!!! When I was was a kid both sets of my grandparents had outhouses😂 there are several amusing stories in the family's about them. Now at 74 living in the mountains many people still have and use daily an outhouse and some people In the up of Michigan still use outhouses.
