The Wild West Extravaganza

The Wild West Extravaganza

Күн бұрын

In 1842, a sickly 19-year-old named William T. Hamilton embarked on a journey to the Rocky Mountains accompanied by famed frontiersman Old Bill Williams. Over the course of the next several decades, Hamilton worked as a fur trapper, trader, lawman, guide, hunter, and scout. He’d ride with other notable figures such as George Armstrong Custer and General George Crook, take part in numerous engagements with hostiles, travel the west extensively, and finally - as a very old man - write a book titled My Sixty Years On The Plains: Trapping, Trading, and Indian Fighting. It's not too often on The Wild West Extravaganza that we hear from first-hand accounts but that’s exactly what we’re going to do today. Join me as Mr. Hamilton talks of leaving St. Louis and falling in with the fur trappers, of their encounters with Kiowa and Cheyenne, and he describes - in glorious detail - taking part in a buffalo hunt. Just as a bonus, if you’ve ever thought about making pemmican, Hamilton gives a pretty detailed recipe. #wildwest #history #cowboy

I’ve read just about everything that I could get my hands on in regards to the Frontiersmen, the scouts, guides, Native American tribes, soldiers and fur trappers. Finding your channel and seeing for the first time what type of content you provide is a great opportunity for me to learn more about these times. I’m sure impressed with your show and as a new subscriber will work my way through all of the content in due course. Thank you for a great opportunity to learn more about something that interests me a great deal. I’m in my late sixties and just love the outdoors and reckon I was born a 150 years too late.

Josh, I've been a subscriber for almost 2 years and not sure if I've ever commented on any of your posts. I will do better as I now understand it would help boost your channel. You asked for comments on this show as is a little different so here goes. I thought it worthy of my first comment because it brings a certain wholesomeness to day to day life where both men and women showed each other respect as long as you were polite and adhered to costumes. Job well done. Enjoyed.

What i find incredible is that during the 1870s some of these plainsmen went to lincoln county during the time of billy the kid. The people in that town are said to have given them a wide berth. These plainsmen like hamilton were looked at as some of the toughest men on the planet. Fighting indians and trapping and hunting had turned them into terrifying even to the likes of jessie evans.

Tough Trip Through Paradise, 1878-1879 by Andrew Garcia (Author) Edited by Bennett Stein "Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for the University of Idaho Press This book grew out of a manuscript left by Andrew Garcia on his death in 1942. Ben Stein acquired the manuscript and edited it to tell Garcia's story of the 1877 war between the U.S. government and the Nez Perce people, the end of the buffalo herds and other historic events in western life". I came across this 4 years ago and have read it as many times since. Garcia outfitted himself with trade goods to swap for Buffalo hides on the Montana plains. It's packed with outlaws, whiskey peddlers and renegades. Garcia married a Nez Perce woman who'd been with Chief Joseph when he surrenderd at the Bear Paws. She got away and lived with a couple different tribes before marrying Garcia. He tells her story and of their wild trip back to her old home in Idaho.

The plainsman reminded me of a movie of the same name I believe it was a Cecil B DeMille production and start Gary Cooper as wild Bill Hickok granted it was a glorified version of the old West as seen by Hollywood, but it was very entertaining nonetheless, and gave inspiration to the many times that my friends and I played Cowboys and Indians thanks for bringing back that memory and keep up the great work

Yeah, many of the names of rivers and creeks were called something else...or maybe he just got it wrong. For instance, he references the battle of Beecher island being on the Republican river but it was really on what's now known as the Arikara River. Back then, though, everyone called it a fork of the Republican.
