I always thought it strange that Libya had any motive to shoot down an American airliner when the country with a real motive and who also declared this motive prior to the incident was Iran. Always seemed fishy to me.

I was 24 at the time and read all of the books and newspaper reports that investigated the bombing. I day after the bombing, someone called the Associated Press, the major news outlet and said that they represented the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and that they bombed the plane as an act of revenge for the downing of Iran Air flight 655 in the Persian gulf 5 months earlier by the U.S.S. Vincennes. The U.S. government knows that it was Iran but they covered it up for political reasons and blamed Libya. 2 books that I read: 'Lockerbie. The story and the lessons ' by Rodney Wallis And The fall of Pan Am flight 103' both do in-depth investigations into this disaster and many agree, that it was Iran. The books might be available in your library. If you go to the periodicals section in your library and ask for the mico-film of your newspaper for December 22,1988 the day after the bombing, there should be a report of someone calling in and claiming that it was revenge. I believe to this day, that it was NOT Libya.

I agree. All of the credible books and newspaper reports, also say that Iran did it, to avenge the downing of Iran Air Flight 655 in the Persian Gulf 5 months earlier by the U.S.S. Vincennes.

36:31 "the convention" - the lady should take some course in history, especially focusing on the case of Émile Zola. It should prevent her to release such a nonsense.

She couldn't even get the victim's father's name right, with only 3 persons to introduce to the audience (and didn't bother apologize for the mistake either!) They clearly didn't pick the sharpest tool in the box nor most considerate person to host the event, most probably intentionally. Empathetic and/or meticulous people tend to seek the truth.

This is about international politics and she says its about morality? Morality only plays if you have the same morals as the rest of the nations. Its material or than moral.

Because the sanctions against Libya wouldn't have been lifted unless he did. Pretty sure Gaddafi's son said so. It wasn't an admission of guilt.

@hlowrylong......In simple terms, Libya was on the verge of bankruptcy - businesses were closing, people were starving, and the entire economy was in meltdown. The only way the Libyans could get the drastic sanctions against them lifted was by [falsely] accepting they carried out the bombing. As a consequence, Libya was also forced to pay the record amount in compensation of US$2.8 billion [which was equivalent to US$10 million to each victim's family - including those that were killed on the ground in Lockerbie. To this day, this is still the single largest payout ever made to victims of a terrorist act. The reason for this [and the fact that it took more than a year to negotiate the settlement] is totally due to the pure greed shown by the American victim's families - who recruited the services of one of the most ruthlessly aggressive civil action lawyers on the planet [Alan Dershowitz] to fight their case. But to put this into context, the REAL reason for the bombing of Pan Am 103 was nothing at all to do with al Megrahi or Libya. It was down to the gross incompetence of William Rogers III captain of the US$3 Billion Ticonderoga class USS Vincennes, equipped with the state-of-the-art Aegis combat warning system - that had been sent to patrol the Straits of Hormuz in the Gulf. [Aegis was the most advanced combat warning system at the time and is still a very effective early warning deterrent due to its ability to track enemies both on the ground and sea as well as in the air]. For some totally inexplicable reason, Captain Rogers and his officers mistook an Iran Air A300 Airbus commercial airliner [flight no. 655] with an F14 fighter jet - which is like confusing a dog with an elephant. Rogers gave the order to fire surface-to-air missiles at the airliner, completely blowing it out of the sky, and killing all 290 passengers and crew onboard. What made matters worse was that the Airbus was full of Iranian pilgrims on their way to Mecca. The Iranians were absolutely apoplectic with anger and immediately organised a US$10 Million 'contract' with the Syrian-backed Ahmed Jibril-led PFLP-GC [Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command] terrorist group to down an American aircraft departing from Europe enroute to the US. The Iranian's sole aim was revenge. Named 'operation Intekam' they proudly announced that the 'skies would rain blood'. [taped transmissions of talks about the 'contract' between the Iranians and the PFLP-GC and congratulating them for downing Pan Am 103 were intercepted by Mossad the Israeli secret service]. However, in 2001 the Iranians actually admitted that they had carried out the bombing of Pan Am 103. Despite great reluctance by President Reagan and the US government they eventually bowed to international pressure and agreed to compensate the 290 victim's families of Iran Air flight 655. The amount - a paltry US$61.8 Million! [equivalent to just over US$2 Million per family]. But the Americans never accepted responsibility for Captain Roger's blundering decision to fire on the Iranian airliner - in fact he and his missiles officer were awarded medals for their 'bravery'!
