Most people who like Jill Scott also like Erykah Badu so I totally understand Dad's statement. And because Dad Loves Neo Soul so much I HIGHLY recommend "Kindred the Family Soul" their 1st album Surrender to Love" They are a Husband & Wife duo that sings about topics I know Dad would enjoy & certainly understand.

Who is Jill Scott Vol 1 was Ms. Scott's first album, and I became an instant fan! Originally she was a spoken word artist that would occasionally work musical elements in her poetry. Here she beautifully weaves her spoken word artistry into the music. Perfect! Thank you for this conversation!

Literally got my glass of wine, turned quality to 4k, listened, laughed, and wished I could participate. This was great and a total vibe. I wish my dad were still alive so that I could do the same. Well done gents. Also, this is one of those rare albums to listen to cover to cover and is pure joy for those who have never heard it and appreciate music.

Hi, love this reaction! Just listened to yr commentary after Slowly Surely, and I would say that the song is not "fleshed out" because the entire ALBUM is telling the story. The album is a chronological tale of a relationship gone bad. So after "slowly surely I walk away from", she goes into "ONE is the magic number", moving on optimistically

The Roots Interlude was from an actual concert where she was being introduced. The Roots “You Got Me” was I think sung in a session by Jill Scott but the song was released with Erykah Badu. There’s a Roots performance somewhere with both Queens in concert with them. They hung out together 🥰

Y'all have to react to her live album of this music. She takes it up a notch! Also, Jill and Erykah performed together live on a Roots track 'You Got Me'. Jill was supposed to sing b.g. on it first, but they switched her out for Erykah due to her being better known and a Grammy winner before Jill's full debut.

Love Rain, the original & remix) really show Jill Scott's ability to interpret a song. In the original track she reminisces about a loving warm beautiful "relationship" she discovers was a betrayal. In the remix her voice is filled with the confidence and understanding of a woman that has learned and lived a full life reflecting on the one time she got caught-up in some foolishness!

This is one of my favorite albums of all time! I always felt like she was telling an entire story of being in love to heartbreak to going back to being single. Side note: Her band is 🔥

The surveillance in "Watching Me" is specifically about *Jill Scott's* community. The album pre-dates the smartphone. It does not pre-date the over policing of Black Americans. Cultural context is always key. Still cool how great music can be interpreted so many ways through the eras.

I was waiting with bated breath to see if you would like It's Love. It has a DC go-go influence. Washington D.C. has it's own genre which is percussion heavy, funk infused music. She used the go-go sound on this song. Rapper Wale also is from the DC area and features go-go prominently in his music.

Hey y'all! Great review, just adding some context to the track "Brotha", Jill was speaking to Black men as a whole, not one individual, encouraging Black men to keep going, keep believing in themselves and to not let anyone "Hold [them] back". She's offering these words of love and encouragement because she knows the world constantly tries to tear Black men down, villanize them and make them feel less than majestic. She is telling Black men, how special they are to her and that "You're my hero". "Brotha" is a term of endearment that Black women call Black men and other Black men call each other, the same replies in reverse when you see the term "Sista". Hope you see this comment and hope it helps to give some context to not only this track but others you may listen to in the future. Peace.

BTW Jill and Erykah totally adore each other. I haven't seen any reactions to Jill Scott's "The Thickness" maybe because it was only on her live album (Jill Scott experience 826*) and it's super heavy and real but art should affect people and this song does. She asks all the children to leave before she starts. Ps isn't the hidden track at the end of her first album? The one you just let the last track play for a minute or two and the remix of "you love me".
