Nixon defeated McGovern in a landslide . He was in no danger of losing. Given this, the level of his paranoia was incredible.

Everyman has there faults and Nixon’s paranoia was infact that. His time in the Oval Office dealing with certain figures in the government only amplified such a thing. Truely one of the more interesting presidents

Nixon can described in three words: Flawed, Paranoid, Brilliant. Definitely one of the most complicated and interesting presidents

I think the paranoia thing is a bit exaggerated with regards to Nixon. He was surrounded by an almost entirely hostile media and the Senate and Congress was heavily Democratic. He’d lost the 1960 election , quite possibly due to corrupt practices in Illinois and West Virginia and was deeply scarred by the experience. Add to all that, the Anti-War movement, and the Cold War in general, I think he was partly justified in being mistrusting of the political environment around him.

@@BenjaminNavillusno he wasn’t, his mistrust bordered on redneck, oh no were the hippies gonna get him? The commies? Stop trying to justify for him, like Bush and Terrorism, he used the exact same reasons you did. The Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement and Anti-War movement was not and is not an excuse. He was a paranoid man, end of story

This guy was an unknown talk show host from the UK, not a journalist. Nobody expected this guy to get anything out of Nixon or be tough on him. Truly proved them everyone wrong.

Actually, Frost was very well known on both sides of the Atlantic, but mostly as a satirical comedian up to this point. Turned out the reason he was so good is that he had a genuine interest and talent for serious political commentary.

Not unknown. With his ever present clipboard, Frost had a talk show in America that started around '69, '70, that lasted a number of years.

I thought Frost did an excellent job with the interview. As Nixon said, “He was tough but fair”. I agree. He let Nixon answer the questions without interruption. He called him out on the contradictions and discrepancies between what he said & the tapes, etc.

Nixon's people obviously told him he'd be able to run rings around "the British guy who hosts comedy shows". Little did they know that Frost could turn on the serious as well.

He had already interviewed Nixon in 1968 so Nixon obviously knew who he was. Don’t let a Hollywood movie fool you. It’s not documentary, it’s only entertainment. Ofc, he must have also undermined him to a certain extent because of the enduring political turmoil this caused him.

The Nixon interview would have been much different if Frost had been replaced with a real prosecutor who would have held Nixon to the questions and not allowed emotions to control his "answers".

@Pete S Yeah you’re probably gonna want to spell “you’re” correctly when you’re trying to insult our country’s collective intelligence. You need that “e” at the end, as in “You’re probably an uneducated piece of Euro-trash.” Also btw - he’s probably NOT a yank, as we don’t generally use the word “thick” to mean unintelligent over here. We just say “dumb,” or “stupid,” or “from Europe.” Just a lil’ language tip from your bffs across the water! Sincerely, The United States of America
