I was young at the time Richard Nixon was president, and resigned the presidency. I remember how much my parents disliked him. I can honestly say that the more I see of the man, his strengths and his weaknesses, that he had what he saw as the best interests of the country as his goals. Given how divided and conflicted the country is today it’s nice to see his thoughtful reflections of his life. I wonder what he’d have to say about the country today and how we got to this point.

Same here as I was ten when he resigned but do remember it well. My parents were Nixon supporters throughout his career though.

It really is nice to watch all these different interviews of Nixon and to hear just how glowingly he talked about his wife and two daughters. You really get this vibe that of all of his many historical, groundbreaking achievements he had as a politician, that looking back on his life, he also viewed his wife and children to be one of the things he was most proud of.

I am 75 , and back in the day I was in the minority of those that thought that Watergate was something blown way out of proportion and why so many people were against someone who won over 60% of the popular vote and losing only one state in the electoral college. Most seemed to believe the media and jumped on the bandwagon to condem Nixon as the worst president ever. I hope they are watching these foundation videos and will side with me now to see how much better of a president than what we have had lately. That includes the candidates running for office now.
@Stevie1der13Ай бұрын
Nixon was one of the worst Presidents in history. Trump has actually made Nixon look like an angel. Don’t be fooled. This guy turned the National Guard against citizens. Those citizens were trying to stop the war we didn’t belong in. We lost 55,000 troops in Vietnam. If you read about him, you’ll find he was a paranoid narcissist and dirty dealer…

Another Nixon interview that I've never seen. I might be having a false memory, but I swear that I recall Nixon addressing either the U.S. Senate or the House of Representatives in 1993. I recall seeing it on C-SPAN back then.

@robertpolityka8464Ай бұрын
Nixon was smart enough to know that he needed men like both Pat Buchanan and Pat Moniyhan, in his administration. The two Pats have very little in common. However, Nixon knew there times where he took a liberal point of view, other times towards the conservative point of view , and still other times when he took a centrist, center-left or center-right direction.
@urgadurgaАй бұрын
@@robertpolityka8464 It's something I really like about him. He wasn't an ideologue, he was a pragmatist. He would look at every situation and think "What is the best course of action?" not "How would a conservative solve this?" I think it's a great quality for a person to have.
@robertpolityka8464Ай бұрын
@urgadurga I like the fact that Nixon is willing to think several steps ahead of the game, in terms of foreign policy. For example, when he opened up US-China relations; then, he could get a better arms agreement with the USSR and would have a greater chance of success when it comes to finding peace with Vietnam.

I’ve noticed Nixon often spoke about “human rights” in his interviews. He seems to use that phrase to justify some of his actions in these interviews. I don’t know how important those considerations were during his presidency but I hope they were always secondary to the true responsibilities of a president; ie the best interests of the American people.
@NixonFoundationАй бұрын
Interesting note. He does say in a number of interviews that the responsibility of an American president is the security of America first. For example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJnIo2Nmp56dbc0
@delltross1721Ай бұрын
@@NixonFoundation in a way yes, but he justifies our rivalry with the Soviet Union by describing the United States “system” as the only “system” able to defend the rest of the world from the Soviets, not that the American ppl’s needs were served by this course of action. It’s a subtle difference since ultimately the ppl were greatly benefited by his efforts to contain the Soviet Union, but worth pointing out bc the American ppl are not an abstract “system”, but real people with material interests. Those interests should be 1st and foremost in the President’s mind.

I am at a loss by this interview. It is fascinating to see his views and how consistent but meaningful they are. His War on Drugs policy is inspirational recognising the remuneration even users need to provide but also the duty of society to get them off drugs through treatment. His China policy I personally do not follow and think we see today how imperfect it has been although I guess that depends on application too but I was going to criticise his view of Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachyov until seeing the whole thing. He was correct in the end and of course the Avgustovskiy Putch (1991) finished him. Impressive.

The mindset of Nixon was one of profound understanding of the geo-politics and changing political tides of the time.American politicians now don’t even possess the eloquence these days to make the political assertions Nixon and men of his era made and The foreign policy Implementations that made this country thrive uncontested for decades.💯

It's so great to listen to him, especially when he talks about international relations. It's such a contrast to what we have today. The only place I disagree with him is when he talks about the war on drugs. I think we need to: 1. Bring back Methaqualone 2. Restore the right of every citizen to purchase barbiturates (especially along 14th Street in New York City) and promote the use of central nervous system depressants in general. 3. Make available the cleanest and most powerful LSD possible, so that we can all enjoy living. Amen

The story has not been fully written but the US support for China economically has become like Frankenstein. We helped create an economic monster who turned on those that helped create it. What a sad story to create and support a competitor who eventually usurps those that helped it. Giving so many undeserved economic advantages to China may be one of the worst decisions in Modern geopolitics. It was born out of shortsighted egotistical thinking…to wit that China would taste capitalism and change to become more liberal. It never happened. The west was arrogant and greedy. Getting cheap Chinese products..a short sighted gain for long term pain. Not that Nixon was wrong to engage China. But it should have approached cautiously. More aid to China should have been coupled with more liberal progress.
