FROST SEEDING CLOVER 4 DEER HUNTING

In this video I go over frost seeding clover for a whitetail deer hunting food plot. Clover is the mostly wide used food plot that deer hunters utilize for feeding the whitetails and for harvesting big bucks. Frost seeding has many advantages and if executed correctly the result can be amazing. I share with you key details and pitfalls to watch out for when frost seeding, and show you real life examples of fields that would work well and others that wouldn't work.

Couldnt agree more, ive never had much success frost seeding clover but when i plant it in the fall it comes back amazing the next spring

That’s definitely the best time in my opinion. Unless you’re under a severe severe drought planting in the fall has much higher success rates. Thanks for watching and commenting

Another Tip is to drill in late winter wheat then frost seed over that the wheat will also help keep weeds out of the clover, just remember to spray and kill the wheat before it becomes too thick.

Cover crop will help the clover if you have drought conditions.

Good time of year to be doing tillage and equipment maintenance also. Just got through coating my plow bottoms and shanks with an old oil and diesel mix to help keep them from rusting and be ready for spring.

Great info Wes. Im going to spray my spotty patch of winter wheat then im going to have to get the box blade out because the pigs have rooted up the field. Can also work in my pelletized line. Count your blessings u you dont have feral pigs....they absolutely dedtroy your fields.....

Wow! That’s ridiculous you’ve gotta take a box blade out there to level! Dang pigs are awful it sounds like. I hope we never get them but I wouldn’t bet on it. Thanks for watching and commenting

I have had great luck Frost seeding Clover into Oats, and Turnips because oats suppress weed Growth. Preparing the soils in the fall is key I like to prepare it in September and drill oats into young turnips. Then frost seed over that, I usually use 6-24-24, for the clover.

@@DIYfoodplotpro I have drilled wheat in January 1.5 inches deep, then frost seeded over top, it worked out very well with Outside Prides White clover and Alfalfa blend, the trick is to have enough organic matter in the Ground, so that you retain moisture well into summer. One thing that helps a clover plot in Drought is to turn the soil with a lister breaking plough, it makes pockets in the soil that hold extra soil moisture in the soil. I love Chisel plows or disk chisels but they do not allow the deep soil penttration of a SubSoiler or breaking plough. In the bad drought of 2012 the only clover plot we had that survived well was broken in fall 2011 sowed in wheat and Turnips Then frost seeded and it did well even In a 100 year drought.
