I admire this short cause of 3 main reasons: 1. It's in broad daylight 2. The guy seems to be set on fighting the creature 3. The creatures design is amazing. The guys acting is also amazing Love your work!

Thanks! I'm really happy that people are responding positively to the broad daylight location and the unconventional setting for a horror film. Glad you liked it!

Couldn't agree more! This film is an achievement. Great camerawork, great setting, terrifically executed. Love the western theme and the feeling of isolation surrounding the main character.

Highly original setting and story. And what's more: HORROR IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! The theme seems to be that of the Wendigo, certainly the most frightening and bizarre of all the Northern boreal legends.

+JackInards Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad this stuff is inspiring to you! The best advice I can offer is just force yourself to make something. Anything at all. And keep doing it! It's good that you're writing -- that's where it all starts, but if you want to direct or shoot or produce or whatever, you gotta flex those muscles as well. Just gotta go for it with something simple and small and try not to worry about it being the best short film ever made. Anyway, I look forward to seeing some of your work down the line!

As someone who hunts and hikes I have often found myself imagining what it would be like if I ran across some strange being in the wilds, and the strange thing is when you are out there that idea feels uncomfortably plausible.

Hi! I really loved this short film! I'm an Old West enthusiast from Italy and I liked so much your film that I have written a post on my blog about it, hoping other fans of the genre will appreciate it. You did a great work, and this is more important considering that western-horror movies are so rare. I also liked your short films production, I see a lot of good works and passion and professionalism. I hope to see other western-horror shorts in future. Greetings from Italy!

Excellent! Remarkable how you were able to make such dreary and dread filled ambiance in a setting of daylight on white snow. Interesting that you had such authentic clothing and props on hand for this as well. Winter and snowy landscapes are my favorite settings for horror. Hope you will find more inspiration in them. Thanks!

Thanks very much! Yeah I love winter/snow settings, especially when they're western. I'd like to do more stuff in this vein, but it's difficult because I live in southern California now. I hope to make a western horror feature in the coming years however, so fingers crossed. Thanks for watching!

YEEEESSSSS! NEW VIDEO! When I see notifications for your video I leave whatever I'm doing and watch. A suggestion: Put thin slab of metal or a weighted object that would slip under the depth of snow, and push it from behind using a yard stick or thin metal pole. I used to make snow move up and pretend it was some monster with my hand, perhaps you could apply it to another snow movie. Also thanks for making me scared of snow. The thing that falls from September to June sometimes where I live...

Great little short film dude. A little bit of constructive feedback if you want it. I think that some nice wide shots cut into it would have worked really well and less hand held just felt that I was being pulled out of it every time you switched between hand held and static shots. also not sure if it would work better but having the camera below the man on the horse gives the character more of a powerful look think it could have looked better if you were looking down on him or switched from looking up when he got there and looking down when the person started to appear. plus think the face reveal was quite good as well . Hopefully this helps btw great location and use of props.

Great work once again! The fast push-in at 1:27 looked like something David Lynch would do! Was that intentional? And if you do a Making Of for this short as well, please go into detail how you created those amazing sounds!
@dannyfdonahue
@dannyfdonahue 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you -- once again! :) That push was not intentionally similar to David Lynch because I'm not really familiar with his work. I should go watch some of it. I would say I was channeling a bit of Sam Raimi in that moment if anything.

Danny Donahue Oh yeah I know one shot from Evil Dead that is like that, although I haven't seen it yet. Lynch does it in Mulholland Drive before they enter Club Silencio and in Lost Highway in the dream sequence around the 30 minute mark. I guess it's a common technique used by horror directors.

Danny, I've just watched the companion video ("Making of...) and I believe you're far too modest. My take is that the thing here is the bones of a Native American (wrapped in an Indian blanket) come back from the dead to avenge the sins of the white man (e.g., the needless slaughter of the buffalo and other wild game, which is symbolized by the skulls of the mule deer in the snow). That works absolutely. Quoting from Wikipedia, the "Ghost Dance" religion which spread widely among Native Americans throughout the West in the late 19th century taught that "proper practice of the dance would reunite the living [Indians] with the spirits of the dead, BRING THE SPIRITS OF THE DEAD TO FIGHT ON THEIR BEHALF [my emphasis], make the white colonists leave, and bring peace, prosperity, and unity to Indian peoples throughout the region."
