The Jigsaw is a multi award winning short film, a short horror film which won over 30 awards worldwide during its 2014-2015 film festival run. It was selected by Oscar qualifying film festivals like The Montreal World Film Festival, LA Shorts and the Cleveland International Film Festival.
We believe it is one of the best short horror films to come out in recent years and stands its own as a superb short film for all to enjoy.
Inspired by an old ghost story the directors enjoyed as children, they hope it will continue to be enjoyed by many people for years to come.

I see it as the old man is ready to go, he knew the lore behind the puzzle, and sought it out. When he knew he had it, he poured his favorite drink, gave a long look at his wife’s picture, who we can only imagine has passed, and starts the puzzle. The clock chiming represents that his time has come. He could have stopped the puzzle, but he was ready to be reunited with his wife

I didn’t want this film to end. Everything about it held my attention. Very well organized short movie. Everything about it is professional. For example, the music is in harmony with every seen. The characters are perfect and the in between scenes such as the storm and driving from the shop to the home of the buyer brings thrill to the chill of this story.

Its so weird how someone would want a puzzle with no picture, and no idea even if the pieces are even all there! The absolute worst is to start a puzzle and never finish due to missing pieces 😩
@dontaylor7315
@dontaylor7315 3 жыл бұрын
My take: He knew the puzzle was fatal and was looking for it. He was ready to die and chose the puzzle as the way to go. We're not told how he knew that shop was where he'd find it but he knew. Then when the shopkeeper reacted that way he was sure. It didn't matter about the missing picture and he knew it would have all the pieces he needed to finish his life. The picture would be different for each person who bought the puzzle. Edit: But I know what you mean about missing pieces. It's frustrating!

I heard this story back in 2006, one of our favorite Urban Legends to tell. This short film brought it to life! Well done! The story that told to me was about a middle aged woman who found a puzzle box on her front porch when she went out to get the newspaper one early morning. She loves puzzles, the thing was the puzzle box's cover was blank. Curious of what picture it contained, she couldn't wait to begin it. It wasn't until the very last piece in her hand that it dawned on her that the puzzle's picture looked awfully like her family room with her furniture in the exact location. Everything was the same except for a disfigured face staring at her through the window with an axe in he's hand. The face had an eerie smile to it, she turned to see the window but nothing was there, it wasn't until she put the last piece in where her face frozen in terror stared back at her. That's when she heard her window breaking behind her and the scrap of something big being dragged getting very close to her. They say when you come across a puzzle box with no picture on it, it is best to leave it untouched. For anyone with common sense knows puzzles show their secrets on the cover, not hidden in the darkness.

I loved the suggestion of impending doom - it was effective because of great photography and lighting,and good acting.Personally though I think the ending would have been more effective if the shopowner when he appeared, had just stood there looking at the old man,and it was left to the immagination what the old man's fate would be.

Yeah the editing kinda of gets rushed at that point. It has some really beautiful montage leading up to that, but to be really perfect there needed to be a transitional montage where we see the old man get progressively more distressed as he adds to the puzzle. The cut to midnight and the slow double-take didn't quite work. It was the brushtrokes of the idea they wanted to communicate, but not the whole painting

This was a very good short film but to me it wasn't really horror. I mean certainly the idea is a horrifying one, putting together a jigsaw puzzle that either shows your death, or allows the man at the window to come through and kill the puzzler. It was really very sad to me, more of a tragedy. I see people in the comments wondering why the man was so adamant about getting the puzzle, but he goes home, way out of the way to a lonely house, where we see what can be determined through inference is a picture of the man and his late wife. He plays 'We'll meet again' and it echoes the shopkeeper's words, but to me its him looking to join his wife. He knew the puzzle would kill him, and was looking to reunite with her and this was a means to do it. To put himself out of his misery. This wasn't a murder by the puzzle, it was suicide by the man putting the puzzle together. But that's just what I took from my own viewing.

A third of the way through I realize this movie is based on the well known "campfire" horror story. Although I wonder why the man in the film was so eager to get his hands on it. As for the man who sold the puzzle, he is perhaps cursed to kill whoever who completes the puzzle and hence taking the puzzle back with him.

That's right, we too based it on that scary story we heard when we were young and also adapted it to exactly what you said. We thought everyone would remember and know the story but it amazed us how few people actually knew it. I hope it didn't spoil it too much knowing the ending.

I don't think he would have chosen to do "that". Take the photo, the particular song that was playing and a lonely old man and you reach a logical choice.
@timshel11
@timshel11 6 жыл бұрын
1caramarie exactly. This is a man who knowingly walks into a puzzle shop, carefully looks over all the available puzzles and then pays good money for the most mysterious one. Obviously a puzzle lover, there was no way he was not going to finish that puzzle. The puzzle itself compels you to finish, it won't let go until the final piece is set. Really great, I really enjoyed this short.
@1caramarie
@1caramarie 6 жыл бұрын
Plus, he wants to see his wife again. "We'll meet again...Don't know where...Don't know when". Since she is dead that leaves one option. If he would "have done it" the photo and the song would have been unnecessary and the movie not very successful. Rashad, since you wrote the screen play and directed the film, are saying you got lucky?
@SensaProductions
@SensaProductions 6 жыл бұрын
Not at all but there were so many possible double meaning to that song choice that it just had to be the one 1. It was the last line that the seller said to box before the man left the shop ( a clue to the ending of the film) 2. Following that connection, we loved the irony of when the song says the line "We'll meet again some sunny day" and then we cut to the opposite, a cold dark rainy night! We love that kind of juxtaposition. 3. It was exactly as you described and the reason the old man played that particular song. He wanted to be with his lost wife. 4. It has a wonderful aged feel to it that really connected with the vibe we wanted for the film These were our reasons for the song choice.

We really tried our best to do this without dragging it out too much. The two exterior shots from outside the window were supposed to give you that feeling and because it is not realistic that he would finish the puzzle with one piece to go before working it out, we had to make sure that it was completed right before the shock moment or the final reveal wouldn't have worked. I mean, who in their right mind wouldn't notice their own face and room whist making the puzzle and what ordinary person would continue making it once they had seen what it is? This is why we had to play it out like we did. Thanks so much for watching and commenting and we would really appreciate it if you could rate, sub and share with friends .

The Jigsaw I agree, it is quite a difficult reveal to pull off without the audience guessing it ahead of time. But I don't think it would be "dragging the scene out" but more of "playing with the scene" because we need to see more of his frustration. We need to see him puzzled at every piece he puts down, and slowly being more and more creeped out by what he thinks is going on. That way we're constantly wondering what the puzzle is and why it's freaking him out.

to be perfectly frank, I do believe the final scene did show how it returned. the final piece he placed in the puzzle showed a man looking in from the outside, which indeed there was, and just as the screen cut to black the sound of the window glass shattering could be heard. If I am not mistaken, the man looked very much like the shopkeeper, in which case how it returned to the shop seems quite obvious. However I could be wrong in this.

This is one I've watched numerous times, and notice something different each time. I love the simple expressions of the shopkeeper when he makes the sale and lets go of the box. He's laughing in the beginning, making him seem sinister. But if you were him, always warning buyers to not choose that puzzle, knowing it will *SPOILER* lead to their deaths when they go ahead and ignore his warnings, you'd probably laugh at the absurdity and futility of it all. I feel the writer and director would be great for either an original horror movie, or breathe some originality into a dead franchise, like A Nightmare On Elm Street. Unfortunately, they haven't done anything since this as far as directing and writing go, and this was made in 2014. I hope these two come back and make a successful feature-length horror movie and get the recognition they deserve.

There was a story like this in a book that I had as a child. A woman goes to an antique store and wants to buy an old jigsaw puzzle, untitled, and with no front picture on the box. The woman at the front warns her not to buy it, but she buys it anyways. She takes it home and begins the puzzle. She gets halfway and notices that the puzzle picture depicts wallpaper that exactly matches her unique floral wallpaper in her room. She is intrigued and continues to put the puzzle together. As she gets further along, she notices her bed, her pictures on the wall, and her window behind her. When she's almost compelted the puzzle, she decides to take a break and make a sandwich. She brings it back and continues once again. She then sees her table that she's working on, with her plate and sandwich both depicted in the puzzle. She then gets really apprehensive about finishing the puzzle (duh- I'd be freaked out like as soon as I saw any similarities!) Anyways, the only thing to finish at this point is the view from the window. When she finishes it, she pulls herself back to get a good look at the finished product. The puzzle depicts her working on the puzzle with something inhuman staring at her through her window. She turns around- and it's right there, in her window staring at her. I read this at like 10 years old and considered it one of the scariest short stories I'd ever read! I think the book was called "Horror Stories to Read at 10 till Midnight" or something like that. If anyone else knows what book I'm talking about, pls comment and let me know if you remember this story too! The cover had a Grandfather clock with a skeletal hand holding a pocket watch on it. I'd love to hear from anyone else who's read this book of shorts, as they were all pretty scary for young kids!
