Tho it went to maximum and I had an ultimatum to lower it or I would be banished... but the storm passed and the campaign ended successfully, I was lucky for my 1st playthrough

Straight up, the more you do for your citizens the more discontented they are. At the beginning hope is high and discontent is low - they have no tents and hardly any resources, but they're happy. You only need the automatons on coal towards the end of the game, I've never failed to start the storm with less than 25k coal storage using human in days shifts.
@vesoha6 жыл бұрын
Dunno about that, in my last game i had 98k coal and never even made a coal mine or coal outpost, and the only thing i used automatons for was wood because they were in areas that made little sense to heat. If you go to the generator you will be able to see if you get more coal in that you use, and that is a 24 hour cycle, so you really don't need to have it comming in at night if you just make sure to keep it in the green. Now keeping the margin large is good naturally so you have some freedom to increase the heatlevel when it gets colder.

Tip: You don't need to turn the generator on until the temperature drops. If you do choose to turn it on, don't bother with houses because the homeless will sleep in the heat zone. I don't touch the generator for days and build 8 houses before the first night and a medical post close to the generator because you'll get a couple sick people. Secondly, I build my workshop on the first day a decent distance away from the generator to create an industrial zone, because towards the end of the game you want automatons running your workshops 24/7 and the area close to the generator is premium living space. Lastly, resource outposts are amazing - build those instead of wasting your valuable early research time on faster gathering or steam hubs. The faster you get a beacon up and get more workers the better... Especially if you choose child shelters, like me, and can't rely on the child labour.

With that, I managed to have nearly 24k coal, 9.7k rations, 750 (max) wood, 750 (max) steel, all laws passed, all necessary researches completed right before storm. And I won without needing any bad laws, 0 deaths, "we haven't crossed the line" ending. Thanks for this amazing video.
@ndvorsky3 жыл бұрын
I don't know how I survived the storm. Everyone here is talking about stocking up on coal and food and I'm here just like, "you can do that?" My last moment as the storm broke was with the generator at ~90% stress and only 40 coal remaining with zero hope and hundreds of ill people. This video is definitely changing how I play.
@glenr73936 жыл бұрын
You only need 1 or 2 in the cook house, as they will process all the raw food early on, saving you 3-4 peeps for other jobs, if you build gathering huts near the piles ( 1 ea for coal and wood/steel) first thing, and lay roads peeps don't get cold, I've never had peeps get frost bite (though haven't tried the game on hard yet). If you wait until you're asked to build the tents, you get a hope bonus. And use the inner 4 circles for houses and max 3 med tents only, placing the hunters, cookhouse and workshop on the 5th circle (as they can be heated during work hours. I've also found during late game you can run just 9 small steam gens around the 6th circle all through the storm.
@martint53403 жыл бұрын

I suggest an alternative first law: soup. It allows you to turn your 100 raw food into 250 rations instead of 200, which is extremely helpful because it gives you a longer window to get your hunter's huts staffed, and that's a huge challenge in the early game since they require 15 people and make 15 raw food per hour. Sadly, that's not enough food to keep up with the needs of 80 people, so you end up needing 2 hunter's huts with 15 and 10 people staffing them respectively. Needless to say, it's pretty damn difficult to get that many people freed up within the first few days, so any additional time you can spare is very helpful. Also, yes, it makes people discontent, but at the beginning it shouldn't be an issue. Now, onto the alternative strategy and why you shouldn't just make hothouses. 1.) It requires Tier 2 research, meaning it'll take a while to unlock. 2.) You need a steam core to build it. This wouldn't be an issue if Coal Mines didn't also require steam cores, and you WILL need a lot of coal in the next week as the temperature drops and you start using heaters, and then on top of that demand will nearly double when you get the generator range upgrade. Now, in the early game you can get a burst of 3-5 steam cores from the early scouting, but remember that requires research, too, and it requires lots of wood and another 5 people on top of what you're already using to staff the hunter's huts. This means you now have to free up 30 people AND you have to wait for the first 3 expeditions to complete AND you have to do a bunch of early-game research to even begin with hothouses while still making enough coal to sustain a city's worth of buildings. Just trust me, do soup early and throw down a cookhouse on Day 2. You can thank me later. P.S. don't forget to staff it with children because child labour is OP

I disagree on some things: 1. During work time the temperature that matters is that of the work place (while in free time the temperature that matters is that of homes, that of the outside if they are homeless). There are a lot of chances for colonists to get sick (and so not be able to work) if they just gather the stuff in the cold, that's why in very early game I rely on gathering posts which have some insulation. 2. The workshop and anything else other than homes and buffs for homes should be placed farther away from the city, at least 6 squares, as to allow 3 rows of homes to be placed encircled around the generator since workshops and other buildings have heaters and homes don't. 3. I'm not actually sure about this, but I think that the medical post efficiency is influenced by temperature, however I can't find any info on that. If it is though it should be placed next to the generator, maybe instead of the workshop.

Shit I learned from this video that made me question my intellegence. "You should use your first steam core on a hothouse so you don't need 30 people hunting inefficiently all day." "You should build your first indistries in a clump together around 1 steam hub." (Kill me now, I was sure for some vague future reason they needed to be next to those various edges on the wall." "Build all your starting homes right around the genorator in a ring, don't build them in a means that needs an additional steam hub immediately." "When the temperature starts to fall, make sure no workers are out in the negative 40 temps gathering junk by hand." (I was wondering why I had 18 people sick by day 7) "It's 100% ok to build a carehouse and 2 industries before the beacon, especially since you won't need to waste all your wood building houses and a third god damn hunters hut because everyones starving." "Turn the heaters on around your first industry so everyone does not freeze to death." "Make sure your basic god damn needs are taken care of before building a second workshop." Geeze, my first game ended after I rapidly harvested all the wooden crates and realized that without dismantleing key buildings like hunters huts I'd have 0 way to climb the tech tree and establish a single permanent industry. Thank you so much mate.

not the best starting strategy, would not work on hard mode. gathering posts are cheap and provide insulation. then get heaters in them and they will be fine and your workers wont get sick. there is plenty of starting coal and wood. steel is the big one. getting a steelworks is more important than a coal thumper. steelworks, heaters, sawmill and drawing boards seem to be the best initial research. and you never let the research stop if you can help it, which is why steel is important. if you get coal mines early, you don't need a coal thumper, just upgrade the coal mines and get autos working them asap. and you will be fine with the coal outpost.

Some more tips for you pal: Don't build buildings during the day, as the people will happily build during the night. You don't need the boiler on until the 7am the morning of the first frost spell. With that you don't need to gather coal until the day before the frost. On the first day you need to spam mass collection of wood, that way you can spam down 8 houses, 1 tech building, 1 food gather, 1 cook and 2 medical bays.

This might be either a difficulty thing or that 11-bit Studios have adjusted the game somewhat because as of now (June-2020) the initial cold drop is a much more leniant -10°C instead of -20°C. Also the first medical post is just as capable in handling your initial batch of survivors during those temps because I had my peeps gather all the free resources first before starting to build up an industry. Although in hindsight, I should have used Gathering Stations as well ^^ That thinking almost ruined my coal supply too. Even with the tooltips took me a while to realise that coal thumpers and gathering stations work hand-in-hand ^^ Im personally more fond of the "Sustain Life" approach, because while the initial strain with the gravely ill is problematic, once you get your first infirmary you will get your sick workforce back without the need for a factory to produce prosthetics.

Some more games that sound like what you're looking for are: 'Endzone: A World Apart' 'Atomic Society' Maybe 'After the Collapse' Try those on for size.

Colton . Zimmerman oh, dude, also, definitely check out Atom! Atom is great. It's an indie RPG a lot like the first two Fallout games, but it takes place in Soviet Bloc countries. It's only $11.99 on Steam.

I find immediately getting a scout team and exploring to be the best option as I'm usually able to pump out enough resources to get my research up to coal mine by the time the Automaton gets to New London therefore giving me enough breathing room to pivot my workers to steel and wood opening a factor and making my bots cheaper and more efficient

Hey man, great video, thanks a lot for the tips! I have just one question: I tried building the resource depots as you adviced but without a Steam hub, and I didn't see any difference. I even didn't put the heaters on during work shifts, and with 2 hospitals I had 0 sick. What's the point of having both a Steam hub & your heaters on? I believe the heaters will do even when it gets colder in the first phases :)

Just started with this game, got banished at day 18 or so (before the temperature even dropped further than -40). I think I built the beacon too soon and I DEFINETELY went to the abandoned city too soon. Freakin' londoners, lol.

mwm same. I just got it today and my first three play throughs ended with me being kicked out of the city shortly after the londoneers announced themselves.

You need to establish religion or the other option, then build those buildings. When you select them they give powers to boost hope and reduce discontent.
@darklord_ing34784 жыл бұрын
actually if u said perfect city it shud be work perfectly without any interruption.. i got provlem with sick treatment and lack of clinic post which resulting massive of patients .. but i establish ORDER to sustain the Londoners...most important is u install the watchtower and then upgrade it into station , make propaganda center.. IT WILL MAINTAIN YOUR HOPE AND BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF LONDONERS AND CRIMINALS..even in a day i got 7 people died.. my hope never get reduce

At first glance at the game i made gathering huts close to wood and then near the coal, but after watching this, it made me feel so stupid that u can easily allocate workers directly to the resources.

I was very benevolent through first couple play throughs...then I became a frozen world Mao in my 3rd. They're absolutely right, absolute power corrupts, absolutely! Kids working in factories, roaming patrols to dispatch dissenters. Ignore 90% of requests from citizens...forced overtime in factories to beat the big freeze. I've never played a game that made me question my morality so much before!!🙃

people play games to relax and wind down, but playing this game (at least for the first few tries) spikes up anxiety :D. but it's an excellent game though, my 2nd trial carried me through the days when the temp went down to -60C and everything was running out and everyone's dying or angry. this leads me to watch this tutorial this game is way more challenging than another 11bit studio masterpiece: This War of Mine
@JonnyJointy2 жыл бұрын
Probably someone already said this but im gonna do it anyway cause it does not seem to be common knowledge about this game. The first emergency shift NEVER kills anyone regardless of the workplace. After that only emergency shifts on resource piles (not on gathering posts) will not harm people. However if you do the first emergency shift on your workshop - for example to rush scouts or whatever you like to rush) - and then immediatly do a second one on a resource pile the chance of an engineer dying in your workshop is quite high. Though you can have as many emergency shifts as your discontent allows on resource piles and noone will die.
@bxzidffbxzidff3 жыл бұрын
"By the way I just used emergency shift, do not do that too often because people *will* die... - " "-...it's an *emergency* thing, *don't* abuse it... Right, now we're gonna go to the child labour side!" I realize this makes sense in game, but as someone who has never played that sentence is kind of funny and paints a great picture of what dreary atmosphere to expect lol

If you have 100 food, build a cookhouse to cook the food. Yeah? Research hunters. Beacon first. But research cook house after Beacon. Cook that raw meat. The Gen doesn’t need to be on early game. Tuen it on at night. Shut it off a 2am. It will take a few more hours to shut down keeping people warm.

Never played a game like this and still find it so difficult lol. I was copying the vid for about 5-10 mins then all my stuff was out of sync with yours cos the speed and that. I still have no idea wtf im doing. What should I do? Make it to like Day 7 then just restart cos hope and discontent is all over the show. Really would like to make it to end game with a full city, looks awesome seeing someone who knows what they're doing play it.

First time I downloaded this, it took me a few walkthroughs to get the i gist. One thing I learnt, is pay attention to the red icons flashing below. Build things which keeps their hopes up, so if the heating is off. Their hope will keep up until you sort the furnace out, make sure you have plenty of hospital tents and workers. One thing I learnt at the beginning, is not to over populate. Before building food house and such. Big mistake.

me when for the first time start the emergency shift due to lack of coal ONE OF OUR WORKER DIED DURING THE EMERGENCY, WE NEED TO STHAPPP!!
@marcusbrown388010 ай бұрын
U dont need the coal thumper ever. Go for saw mill, and coal mine. You never need steam hubs till much later. Hothouse meh, hunters gear hunter tactics, then youll build up your huts when you start exploring. Save the cores for advanced coal mine and advanced steal

Trying this game again. I am following along with your setup. I am currently at day 3 10:45 all the resources are near your numbers, but when I click on the coal pile your are discussing at the 10:32 mark in your video. Mine is only showing 19.6/h hmmm
