@adamgarratt3168

This is the best intro to a game I’ve ever seen, because it does three core things, and it does them masterfully. 1) The setting - “we roam the still, cold world, no horizon in sight.” The post apocalyptic feel of this cutscene is done better than any generic zombie movie or fallout game could ever pull off. The sheer misery, the desolation of it all, is portrayed perfectly, and it clues you in to this games tone. Speaking of which. 2) the tone - “we’ve lost our world to snow, and with it, our last traces of humanity.” That line alone tells you everything you need to know about what kind of game this is. This isn’t an easy world, where you can do whatever you want and not worry about it. There is a price for your survival, and every decision you make, regardless of how merciful or how cruel, is going to carry serious consequences that might just involve someone’s life. In many ways the gameplay encourages you to view people as a resource, and that line there is foreboding of what happens when you go down that path. 3) The emotional stakes - “It was hope that pushed us forward. Slowly. Step by step.” You get such a visceral sense of the suffering this entire journey contained. They travelled for miles in an ungodly wasteland, a frozen hell, for one reason and one reason only - the belief that they can still live. That there’s a chance of survival. That scene of the survivors on the ice cliff surrounded by the billowing snow perfectly shows that struggle against the elements, and it makes you think how anyone can bear to withstand that. That’s why this has got to work. Your citizens have come this far, struggled against so much, and because of that failure is no longer an option. Thus, as the cutscene ends and you descend on the generator, the full weight of responsibility comes pressing down on you. You are the captain, and you have a promise to keep; the promise that this was all worth it.

I build a children home, i build a care home for amputees, i gave them back autonomy with prosthetics, i refused to force the londoners to stay, i gave the mother food and the father resources to ge his daughter, i didn't force people to work when it wsn't necessary, i gave them a graveyard and time to mourn their dead in a ceremony, kept hope up and discontent down but NoOoOoOoO! Similar things happened to me, even when everything is going well, people just seem to think that going back to a city turned frozen wasteland is a better idea then staying in the warmth of the steam engine . . . How the fuck do they even expect to reach London when they've got LITERALLY NOTHING, i mean, they used this awesome snow crawler machine to cross this vast distance and get them across much of the way, and with heavy casualties along the way, so how do they expect to survive the journey back?? Its so stupid. I wish there was a way to lie to the public and hide the guy from the other city so that they don't know that they collapsed.

@@LoboalphaMASTER this is a very good insight into why sometimes, shadowy secret police are necessary during times of extreme crisis. If the leader had a stealthy group that could've snatched up that dude at the lip of the crater and made sure he fell in a mineshaft once they found out what he would say. It sounds brutal, but when the survival of the entire city is at stake, sometimes you gotta break a few eggs.

Yeah, the song sounds similar from 1:46, but this one is good, the one from 28 days later was sooo much overused that i pretty much can't stand listening to it nowadays, even though its pretty good at setting the mood. Except that in Frostpunk, it seems to have more of a "hopeful struggle" tone to it, rather then an apocalyptic one. I know another derivate of it from a lower sci-fi post-apocalyptic movie which is used as the closing theme of the movie. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rabbXoWeoZtrhNU

My only complaint about this game (and I'm picky so if I only have ONE complaint, the game is GOOD) is that you can't turn your Laws off after a certain time which makes no sense to me. Sure...we'll have the children work in the non-dangerous jobs for A FEW DAYS until we get things built. Oh, look...the Scouts found a bunch of survivors. I guess the kids don't have to work anymore. What do you mean I can't turn them off? The setting, the tone, the feelings of despair and tension are EPIC. When you first see that temp drop warning and realize that you're not ready...PANIC!

Other people in the comments said that it was due to the fact that generators were built around coal deposits and far away from cities due to chaos that was ensuing and also that the weather in the South was even more wild somehow...
@adamgarratt3168
@adamgarratt3168 Жыл бұрын
The problem with that idea is that many, many people probably thought the exact same thing. With millions emigrating down south, I’d rather take my chances with the elements then having to fight for resources against other people. As well as that, it’s said in a new home that it was believed that there were numerous generator cities already established in the north, so the people on the convoy were tricked into thinking a life up north would be easy and safe.
@raphaelledesma9393
@raphaelledesma9393 Жыл бұрын
This isn’t an ice age (tho you could probably deduce that from how fast it is) so thinking of normal weather patterns isn’t working here. The frost in the game affected the world the same way. So whether you were in India or Britain, the world was covered in snow and ice. In fact, the southern colonies were hit the hardest since they were unused to snow.
@frashe5533
@frashe5533 Жыл бұрын
In the north you have wildlife adapted to harsh weather so you have A. More to hunt B. More to eat Of course you also have coal deposits and fewer people to feed so yeah. Thats why they headed north instead of the equator. Even the coldest winters in that era never reached anything below 12°c in the caribean for example. You can imagine the devastation that the great cold caused there.
