Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe

Күн бұрын

Our first offshore sail still haunts us to this day! Lets learn from our mistakes... www.sailingnan...
This video was filmed early Febuary before the global pandemic really took off. Thailand was one of the first countries affected and we took the adequate precautions early to protect ourselves.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we have been sitting at anchor in Thailand completing the final jobs on the list to get our Nandji ready for the massive task of sailing across the Indian Ocean. We have completed a long list of jobs and slowly but surely we are closer to complete.
After having a disastrous first offshore sail to New Caledonia where we are still haunted to this day, we thought we needed to change a few things. Our head sail halyard snapped, resulting in us fishing the genoa out of the ocean. Yosh then trying to climb the mast in rough seas and nearly hurting himself, to then having a smaller and less reliable head sail hoisted for the passage equalling in a longer passage against the trades and hand steering the whole 9 days.... We therefore wanted to take as many measures as possible for a back up in case this happens again. Therefore we install a secondary headsail halyard.
Check out our first offshore sail here...
PROBLEMS AT SEA & 50 KNOTS! 9 days to New Caledonia
• PROBLEMS AT SEA & 50 K...
With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji girl around the world!!
We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!

I had the same problem with my steaming and anchor lights, and after them stopping 2 times I took small pieces of wire and soldered the bulbs to the terminals. It's been two years now and 1600 miles of trailering without any problems. I think you have some of the halyards twisted inside the mast. No suggestions on how to fix other than next time you pull the stick. Cheers from Cincinnati.

Yeah, that New Caledonia crossing was a nail biter (don`t do that these days!). You two have taught us a lot about sailing, and all the different terms. To be a good sailor/boater one surely has to be ingenious! You are. But buddy, at around 3:50 I didn`t hear a word you said. Always love the anticipation seeing that a new vid is up. Thanks, thanks, thanks.

on our cuddy cabin speedboat I also changed all lights to led. I used to burn my legs to the navigation lights when I sat down at the bow to handle the anchor at night. And in the past I had to service them on regular basis because of a not working bulb or corrosion on the terminals. Since I installed led I decided to solder the terminals to the led. and after used silicone to weatherproof the housing a bit more. Since that moment I never had any problems with not working lights anymore and no hot chrome housing to burn my legs to.

Right on:At sea electric contact connections WILL FAIL ,it is only a mater of time. I am a firm believer that on a marine environment every connection should be soldered. It only takes a minute for a lifetime of peace.

Great video! Watching Yosh go up the mast reminds me I will have to do that soon and, to be kind and generous, I am considerably larger, and less fit than Yosh. And much older! Since that first offshore sail you have become seriously good sailors, so you are better able to handle crises on passage, but it is much better to take these preventative steps as well! Well done!

A few sailing channels that I follow on KZbin have shown where they install steps to climb the mast, some inexpensive looking and some a lot fancier. With the number of times you climb the mast, that has to be way a way safer journey than using rope.
@daveg4
@daveg4 4 жыл бұрын
Or you could just use an ascender. Petzl make nice climbing gear. There is no way you should ever climb just without a saftey line anyway. The ascender lets you use your legs to climb. Steps are fine but they can have their own issues

It seems there must be a chafe point that's killing your halyards. They don't just snap for no reason. Have you found it? Could it be chafing inside the mast where it passes the spreader mounts? Just a thought.
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji 4 жыл бұрын
I should have explained why the halyards broke. Firstly to halyard wrap, hence the installation of the deviation block, secondly from chaffe at the bottom of the halyard that caused the rope to pull through the mast. Both issues have since been fixed and illustrated in previous episodes. Sorry for the confusion
