Frozen 2 - "Home" - Storyboard/Animatic

“Home” Storyboard from Frozen II! Thank you for watching!
Step aside, Belle…Anna’s “Home” reigns supreme.
I'm kind of obsessed with the concept of all the Disney characters living in casual harmony with each other. Anna's pal is Anastasia who lives just down the road, Rapunzel draws in the town square sometimes, etc. I guess that's just Disney World, right?
This took about a month for me to make from concept start to finish. I had written out an initial “script” with important beats I wanted to capture in the video, and I hope that came through on your end!
Something I really wanted to emphasize here was the parallel between “Home” and Iduna’s lullaby. More particularly, the line, “Come my darling homeward bound” and how it applies to both daughters and is ultimately advice from one queen to another. For Elsa, homeward bound was Ahtohallan. But for Anna, homeward bound means her home in Arendelle. Hence, the title, “Home.”
An underscored message I incorporated here is my own personal theory: I think that Elsa is dead. Before you call me crazy…Iduna says, “all is lost then all is found,” foreshadowing that only after Elsa loses her life will she become the fifth element. In Frozen 1, the “act of true love will thaw a frozen heart” theme is emphasized and that is how Anna is thawed. Well, no one saved Elsa. The act of breaking the dam was done with the mindset that Elsa WASN’T coming back. Anna’s whole number is about doing the next right thing despite being alone. Also in the beginning, when playing “Enchanted Forrest” little Elsa is playing with a snow angel riding on a horse. At the end of the movie, we get that iconic shot of Elsa, wearing all white, with those two flappy capes flying behind her on her water horse. Subtle, but I see you, Disney. Besides, when Anna and Elsa are reunited, Anna asks “is it really you?” And Elsa changes the subject because it ISN’T really her. I’m pretty sure this is the main reason why she abdicates the throne in favor of Anna. Because Elsa literally CANNOT be queen anymore.
So while this is just my own theory and not canon, I still didn’t let Elsa interact with anyone other than the main squad. She isn’t in any shots at the chapel, and the only person who sees her off is Anna. She isn’t dancing through the night with the kingdom, and the last trace we see of Elsa is the northern lights coming from the Enchanted Forrest.

I was a little disappointed that the last song in the movie was such a sad one, that they didn't put a cheery song at the end or something... When I listen to this song I picture it in the place of 'Some Things Never Change', cause that's where it was originally intended to go, but it actually fits in really well as an epilogue song. In my mind, this storyboard is canon. Ikr? I still wish they'd explained exactly what her job as the fifth spirit is, why she didn't come home to Arendelle, why the forest and Arendelle have to be separated. Kinda would have rather had Arendelle destroyed and rebuilt by both peoples, and have both sisters rule together. Or have Anna as Queen but state as the fifth spirit Elsa is the guardian or something. Alot might be implied, but I'd like it to have been actually explained, you know?

ho wow I love the movie but i was kinda disapointed by the fact they work so well on the grief but by the end of the movie, it was like nothing happend and everything is fine (i would have love to see the kingdom being flooded, it would have been great to symbolise a new begining, aaand i wanted to see elsa as a real spirit) but now that i read your theory, i tottaly agree on that ! that may be really subbtle but if its really the case that would be awesome ! also your storyboard is super cool !

@@zanir2387 don't really know, the ending seems to me a little to much "harmless" for me, and the kingdom was empty, no one would have been phisically hurt in this But another thing that could happen is making the savior of the kingdom more credible, elsa said the spirit have decided Arendelle was worth be saving, it would have interesting to see the five spirit stoping the flood together since it's appenrently a decision of them all

​@@pitruli_ The ending was harmless because Elsa and Anna did all of the right things, no matter what the cost to themselves. For this they were rewarded instead of punished. Makes perfect sense to me. It also shows that two wrongs don't make a right, and allowing Arendelle to be destroyed when it could have been saved would have been wrong. As for the "spirits" who make decisions like this, I doubt it's the elemental spirits. It's more like the fundamental spirits of Nature. Who created Elsa? Not the other four elemental spirits, who don't have coldness and memory magic. Elsa was created at Ahtohallan (memory), where she felt at home, by something else--the owner of the voice that called her to Ahtohallan, namely the North Wind (coldness), an ancient primordial "spirit" of Nature: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJCbc4pjaruCftU All of the elemental spirits, including Elsa herself, were summoned by Elsa's unity symbol lighting up the sky (previously when it appeared it was just the four diamond-shaped elemental symbols), but only she and the Nokk were needed in this instance. They did work together, demonstrating teamwork, and having the remaining three pitch in would have been too much, since this scene was also intended to show how powerful Elsa at her full potential really is. The Nokk, whose magic looks like shockwaves, pitched in but had little effect, while Elsa did the "heavy lifting" with her much stronger magic, which looks like blue-white sparkles. Watch as his shockwave went out first but had no visible effect on the flood, while Elsa's ice wall, which came a split-second later, stopped the flood...cold. Compare this to when her ice couldn't stand up to smaller, weaker waves in the Dark Sea. Then the Nokk stamped his feet on the water, sending another shockwave of power while Elsa dissolved her ice wall, but if you look at the retreating water, that is Elsa's magic pushing it out. The Nokk alone couldn't have saved Arendelle, and Elsa needed him to get there in time. This, by the way, is another indication that the elemental spirits aren't the actual elements themselves. Their magic is powerful but limited, albeit Elsa's power level is a huge step above. Coldness existed before and therefore without Elsa, and *something* was powerful enough to freeze even her. That would be the North Wind, her creator. Similarly, water does things without the Nokk, who had only recently been reawakened by Elsa. These elemental spirits are sentient representatives of Nature to humanity who interact with them in a designated place, namely the Enchanted Forest, but there are more ancient, more powerful spirits who together comprise Nature itself. Who or what else has been calling them with their symbols in the sky (happened at least three times, with the last one involving the unity symbol). The elemental spirits didn't do all of this--they reacted to things that someone/something else did. And when the Mist was lifted, the elemental spirits all seemed happily surprised. They didn't do this, someone/something else that I collectively call Nature with a capital "N" did. They were no match for Elsa even when she was weaker, so how could they create the Mist that trapped Elsa inside, or freeze her with no coldness magic? The elemental spirits are under Elsa's command now, they are not her creators. There are other "spirits" involved, most absolutely--a deeper aspect of the mythology that the movie barely even hints at. Nature is made of some number of ancient, primordial entities that collectively make decisions and do other things to help maintain a sense of balance and harmony, and Elsa is their latest and greatest creation. We don't have many clues about them, but we do know the name of one of them, as mentioned, which is the North Wind, whose voice is provided by singer/artist Aurora Aksnes. This is the only "character" she plays, and she is credited simply and mysteriously as The Voice. Many believe that Elsa was called by the spirit of Iduna, her human mother, but Iduna was played by Evan Rachel Wood as an adult and Delaney Rose Stein as a child (who also voiced the call in a memory being played at Ahtohallan). The voice calling Elsa was that of the North Wind, her spiritual mother.

Elsa hasn't changed physically--she is still an incarnated spirit or goddess incarnate. When Anna asked her if she was really Elsa, she didn't change the subject as claimed, she nodded "yes" and called Anna to her. And when Anna hugged her, it was a physical human body that she hugged, not a ghost. Elsa didn't change into the fifth elemental spirit, she always has been, which is why she has always had coldness and memory magic, among other types. Why else would she have had any magic at all since birth?

Yeah some of the ones they took out just because they wanted a certain amount of time for the movie would have been good. Home would have been perfect for Anna after she became queen but a slight nervous edge in the song would help to make better. Personally I wonder if she could make a good queen considering her leap then look attitude which has almost killed her more than once.

It's really an amazing work! I really like the nod to Let it go in 2:16 when Anna stamped her foot, just like Elsa did while singing "here I stand". Also, about your theory that Elsa is dead and that she changed the subject when Anna asked her if it was really her. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you missed a tiny detail. When Anna asks her "is it really you?" Elsa nods her head just before she says "Anna!". That obviously doesn't mean that Elsa is still a human or alive, but it does mean that it's really her, just as a different being. I know that at first Jennifer Lee created a story in which Elsa dies and her being a spirit is somehow indicated at the end, but in a final version Elsa is a creature that isn't entirely human but also isn't entirely dead.

She read the letter from Anna and set off immediately, so I assumed it was Friday and she was going to meet up with Anna and everyone for charades night. Ahtohallan could be visible, because it's not that far away from the Enchanted Forest and Arendelle (it literally took Elsa a few seconds to get to Arendelle from Ahtohallan when the wave was approaching).

Also, Anna erote that "dont worry Arendelle is doing just fine. Keep looking after the forest". If you look at the map then they both are in opposite direction. Also, Nokk is water spirit and very fast so that why it took him few seconds to reach arendelle just in time.

Lovely music. This should've been used as the finale of Frozen 2. Right after Elsa has just becoming the 5th spirit of the Enchanted Forest and Anna became the new Queen of Arendelle in the end. Not to mention, Anna and Kristoff got engaged and eventually married in the end.

There are some seriously awesome references in this that nobody caught! at 0:55 you can see the baker and Cinderella's step sister from Disney Cinderella. at 1:00 Anna is holding flounder from The Little Mermaid. We see her dressed up as Pocahontas 1:14 and pick up a Cinderella dress. We see Anna cosplay as Thanos at 1:14 as well. (at 1:15 we see Anna dressed up

Cut this out? Unless you just mean the song, I think this is a fan creation (an exceptionally nicely made one), not from Disney Animation. The description seems to say so, and besides, a Disney Animation story artist would probably know that Iduna never had a coronation because she was just the queen consort (the reigning king's wife), not the queen regnant (reigning queen) of Arendelle. In a monarchy there is only a single ruler, as the term suggests. Anna is now the monarch, Elsa was the monarch before Anna, Agnarr was the monarch before Elsa, and Iduna was Agnarr's wife. Additionally, when Anna marries Kristoff, he will be the prince consort--the husband of the reigning queen. As for the theory of Elsa being dead, she didn't change the subject, she nodded "yes" when Anna asked if she was really Elsa. Elsa is most definitely alive and well, not a ghost. She has always had magic, which means that she has always been the fifth elemental spirit (and more) incarnated as a human.

I appreciate your thought, but I'm pretty sure the "angel" riding on the horse is actually a Faeri. A nature spirit of sorts. Remember, this is in the Norse region. They're pagans, not Christans. So let me counter concept your theory: Elsa has passed the veil that was set upon her when she was chosen to take on a role that has been passed on for centuries. When Elsa is frozen think of it less like death and more like a chrysalis. Her final act is to send Anna the memory of her grandfather, that is the act of love, but because she delved deep into Attahallan's traumatic memories it involuntary trapped her there. Attahallan is a nature spirit that thinks and feels and grants power to it's emissaries. So perhaps Elsa is no longer human. But given how she interacts with the nothuldra I can not be swayed that she is dead. She is a spirit. Perhaps even the Goddess of Winter. There's a video I can send that helps support my theory, if you are open to it. He goes into much greater detail.

Aight, this animatic slaps so hard, with the references to other Disney movies and the general beauty of the entire video. Rant: I honestly believe Arendelle should’ve been destroyed. They would rebuild, and the townspeople would pull a Thor: Ragnarok, in which the people of Arendelle are home and they create a new kingdom, and they play this at the end.

I appreciate the references in this. Not only do you get the clearer Anastasia and the Baker from Cinderella 2 starting at 0:52 but the fish at 0:58 looks like Flounder, and the costumes at 1:14 show Pocahontas, Elsa’s first frozen Dress, a Thanos swimsuit with the infinity gauntlet, and of Course the Sleeping Beauty reference at 1:21.

I wish they'd had a variation on this upon returning to Arendelle, the difference being that it would all have to take place during that time... unless. They could intersperse the earlier parts as flashbacks, bracketed by scenes of soon-to-be-queen Anna, with both the past and present versions of her singing in their respective scenes (i.e. the flashbacks aren't being sung over like a montage), which would help illustrate her lifelong dedication to her people/home. Plus, her coronation was so rushed-- I really wanted to see her get a proper one like Elsa did, even if it would have to be slightly condensed. AND THEN, they could have the scene where Anna sends the invitation to Elsa as the post-credits scene, to show that Elsa is still very much involved in Anna's life (thus, part of her "home") and she's not just off being an ethereal hermit. (Also: aw yeah, Anastasia and the baker, Anna saving Flounder from... Belle?, the Vanessa dress, the spinning wheel, etc.)
