This is winter in Idaho. Building an off-grid house as a couple in Idaho has a few challenges that other places don't have, SNOW. We don't always get to build on our house because we have to deal with snow. We love it!

Go to like Harbor Freight and get some of those moving blankets, lay those over the front half of your cab on the viehicles to cover the side and front window, remove it first and hang it on a clothes line to knock out the snow before putting it back on. Will make clearing your viehicles alot easier. The Moving Blankets are usually soft enough to not scratch the paint.

A telescopic car broom with a brush on one edge and a rubber blade on the other edge and an ice scraper on the other end are the best tool for clearing snow, especially on larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs where your arms reach is limited.

I have a tarp over my tractor, but I use a leaf blower to dust off the vehicles, the blower works great on the powder and gets in all the crevasses.

When the temperature gets down close to zero or below a great starting aid for the tractor is a hair dryer. Open the air filter housing and stick it in there on high. You don't need to wait, just do the normal glow plug sequence and crank it over. It won't damage the engine like starting fluid. Block heaters are 1-2kw, probably not a good idea for your power setup. If you get regular snows like that you may consider a blower for the tractor, and tire chains too.
@WarpFactor999
@WarpFactor999 2 жыл бұрын
Yes!! Tire chains really help in deep snow. Many years ago in N. Minn. I was working at a ski resort. It was closing time and cars were leaving the parking lot. I go to leave and see two cars nose to nose trying to get one car started. (A common occurrence.) Oh yeah, it was around -20F all day. These guys just couldn't get the car started. (Also not uncommon at the time.) I went over to help with a sure fix. The spark plugs usually would frost over and short out the plugs. The trick was to take 3 - 4 plugs out (for a V8) and heat them up with a propane torch (which I kept in my trunk). So, we pull the plugs, heat them up, put them back in and go to fire it up. I see a can of starting fluid laying on the snow...I asked how much they used..."not very much." Ok, crank it... He did. Followed by a huge ka-boom! 3 - 4 spark plugs were blown out of the engine due to over half a jumbo trucker sized can of starting ether having been loaded into the engine before hand. We found the plugs buried in the fenders. "Not very much huh?" And, I left...
@RealDeanWinchester
@RealDeanWinchester 2 жыл бұрын
@@WarpFactor999 even worse than that is someone filling the intake of a diesel with nose candy and then turning the glow plugs on, 😂. I've heard of the propane torch trick on spark plugs, I've fortunately never been reduced to that.

@@WarpFactor999 I've started a stubborn Willy's jeep with a propane torch, not lit, but running wide open upside down in the carburetor. It would idle on it, but nothing more.

Put silicone spray on the rubber door seals, to keep them from getting frozen shut. A much better way of getting a frozen door lock working, (better than those things marketed for the purpose.), is to take a propane torch out with you. Heat the key, and shove it in there and wait a bit.

Martin, I have said it before, you have a beautiful family. Makes building a home the best thing that you could provide. I would honestly suggest some jiffy chains for your vehicles and some real chains for the tractor. I thought you had a differential lock on the tractor so all four tires would have traction all the time. Snow is the only time its good for an really if you get in trouble with them, its a winch or tow truck to move it as it tries to find china.

Just a thought, home depot or Lowes sells these sunscreen fabric in tan, black or green in a roll, IIRC 6 ft wide by 50 yds or so. Might think about using some of it to stretch and hang a couple cut-to-size lengths between the posts supporting the porch to act as a see-thru wall. It'll minimize snow landing on the tractor without detracting from overall looks.

Merry Christmas to you all! Thank you so much for sharing your adventures with us throughout the year. Your "snowmagedden" reminds me of growing up in N. Minnesota. In 1966 we had a record snow fall for the year with a bit over 8' of snow on the level. Was great for skiing (I was an avid alpine skier at the time), but made it really hard to get around. One of the reasons why I moved to Texas after I got out of the Navy...you don't have to shovel sunshine. ;o) Cheers to you all and God bless!
