I hope you're planning to continue testing frozen egg rolls from a variety of brands. Your old friends at what is now Dollar and a Quarter Tree sells my favorites, that come in beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, lobster and veggie flavors. One truly huge egg roll per package, and there is a packet of sweet and sour sauce inside the wrapper, though if you're really in an egg roll kind of mood you probably have bottles of appropriate sauces already on hand. Another place that's kind of a surprise is Jack in the Box. They have egg rolls mainly as a side to go with their teriyaki chicken bowl in place of fries, but you can also order them independently. Not quite as big as their dollar store counterparts (and only one variety), they're still substantial in size with plenty of meat as the second ingredient (cabbage will invariably be the #1 entry on the list of ingredients). And you can have fun with the pricing math too; a pack of three actually costs less than buying two individual ones.

The Kahiki was a famous iconic Polynesian-style "Tiki" restaurant for several decades here in Columbus. We often went there for special occasions. The atmosphere alone was much of the attraction, but their food was considered some of the best in town. Unfortunately, they closed almost twenty years ago, but they kept selling their famous egg rolls, which many people regularly ordered for carry-out. Now they're just selling frozen food. I tried their egg rolls just out of sentimentality a few years ago and found them to be the very best frozen egg rolls I had ever had. Of course, they were even better when you could get them fresh, served in that giant longhouse, surrounded by parrots and palm trees, with the occasional thunderstorm presented on the other side of a window by your table.

I loved the Kahiki. I miss it terribly. Did you ever go to their Sunday brunch/lunch buffet? It was amazing. They had a whole suckling pig there, plus several different dishes to choose from, including a HUGE bowl of peel & eat shrimp. And from eating dinners there, I still have a few of the skull and tiki glasses that their drinks came in. As for the frozen egg rolls? They suck. They don't even come close to egg rolls served in Chinese restaurants, especially the egg rolls from Ding Ho or China/Golden Phoenix. People come from out of town to buy those egg rolls by the sack.

Your cooking is so good, even the fire alarm is cheering you! 😜 Just kidding. My next investment will be an air fryer. I have no problems with dirt unless it is my dirt (I live alone). I was confused about the name of these things. Here we call them “Frühlingsrolle” (german) which would translate into “spring roll” (spring for the season, not a technical device). The two varieties you presented are the most common. Vegetarian and chicken. Another great review. Thanks a bunch and have a nice Sunday! 🫶
@brenspin Жыл бұрын
Hello. Here in the U.S. "spring rolls" have an outer wrapper that is smoother in appearance and lighter in color. I suggest doing a Google Image Search for "spring rolls" to see some photos. Also, a Google Search on the difference between "egg" and "spring" rolls stated, "Spring rolls are wrapped in thin flour wrappers or rice wrappers, while egg rolls are wrapped in a thicker, noticeably crispier wrapper that’s been dipped in egg for richness." Apparently spring rolls are traditionally Chinese and what we call egg rolls are believed to have been invented in New York City's Chinatown restaurants in the 1930's. 🙂 I think pork egg rolls might be the most common here. By the way, I have German heritage from both my mother's and father's families. 😉
@kaidzaack2520 Жыл бұрын
@@brenspin cheers from GOG! 🫶 Well, if you order an “egg roll” here it is by no means crispy. It is rather an omelette wrapping for something. We have a huge influence of muslim culture who do not eat pork due to religious reasons. Pork is common here (even raw minced pork - “Mett”) but not a top seller for mass products so it is nearly unavailable… Beste Grüße! 💯🫶
