I enjoyed your video. I did the entire Black Forest Trail this past July. It was Awesome! We did it over 4 days though in the opposite direction. I have only been backpacking a couple years and have been told that I wont encounter anything tougher in PA. by my more experienced fellow hikers. awesome video- kinda funny, you mention wanting to inspire people and obviously the goal is to get people out there but there are also us viewers who are already inspired to go outside- but we got jobs and stuff, we cant go hiking every day- these videos fill the downtime and give us great tips, invaluable. How much do we like the outdoors? sometimes Roxana and I go for a day hike and then at night we watch hiking videos.. My Mom is almost 70, she cant hike like she used to- i got her a roku so she can watch you guys who make hiking videos, she was instantly hooked!! So you may not exactly inspire some of us to go out and hike, but you give us something incredible we really needed= You keep us out there, can't thank you enough for that.

I live not too far from there in Tioga Forest. I love it. Never a lack of a place to walk. Rattlesnakes are usually not a big issues except on really hot days when they come out. That wasn't a rattler at the end of your hike. Most of the camps are privately owned on leased state land.

Love your dialogue and photography. In planning a hike you always need to factor in the elevation in addition to the mileage. It takes a couple weeks for the AT thru hikers to get their trail legs, but even then a 3000 Ft elevation gain is challenging for a lot of people. Try the Allegheny Front Trail east backpack loop in Moshannon State Forest, PA, it has less elevation and is an enjoyable hike with good views on the Allegheny front. Ben Cramer put out a trail guide. Happy trails!

We were the first family to hike the whole trail. We did it in 3 because we didn't know any better. I was 12. My mom bought us those crepe-soled boots from Sears in 1972. It was awesome as hell. I must do it again.

Just went up to the BFT to scout it out for a future hike 2-3 weekends ago... We didn't do much milage for there was still a lot of ice on a lot of the trail, busted my ass a couple times lol!! Its good to see what I'm in for in a month or 2 when I go back up for the whole thing! That first accent is 1100 feet the from creek to summit going clockwise, beautiful but exhausting. Thanks for the video! I did this trail with a group of 10 or 12 when I was 15 in the late 90's. Definitely a rugged trail to say the least.... our map had a warning on it that said, "Not for beginners." We were all beginners but young. Plus we spread the trip out over 5 or 6 days.

The Black Forest Trail is my favorite backpacking trail and I have been on it for quite a few trips. (We stayed at the nice campsite with all the pine trees last June.) Jason, congratulations on doing the entire trail in just 3 days! That was serious mileage on your second day (and third day). You must have very good knees and feet to take that kind of distance. I've seen rattlesnakes on about half of my trips. Not certain if the snake you saw was a rattlesnake though. P.S. -The West Rim Trail is very good also and easier and I have never seen a rattlesnake along that trail, though you could.

Awesome channel man one thing I would humbly advise is that on your first night your camp site was in disarray when you arrived, the fire pit rocks where all over the place that is a sign of the river overflowing . Just watch out when camping close to water, careful when storms aproach. A very bad accident happened in ouchita natl. Forest some years back. The river grew 23 ft in 2 hours and killed a lot of people.

JacobGust If you go counter clockwise along the trail it should be about 2-3 miles away from the Inn. toward the top of the first hill. You can't miss it as it is right alongside the trail. Good luck man that trail is rough.

I usually do not eat at camp but every once in a while I really have no choice, like in the rain when I am dry, when I do eat at camp I am extremely careful about smellsz and not spelling food on myself. I then pack my gar age out and hang my food. I recommend you do not eat at camp though. A 100 feet or more away from camp is best.

Im looking for a trip to do in May and this trail is on my list of possibilities. I couldn't help but notice what you said at 52:44 about the AT hikers. You certainly are that type of thru hiker now! Do you think this trail would lower in difficulty if I split the milage over 4 days instead of 3? I am not as experienced as you are and haven't been backpacking since last spring, but I think something like 7 miles, 14, 14, and 7 could be doable. I guess my main question is how difficult is the terrain/elevation compared to places in western PA like Raccoon Creek and Allegheny Nat'l Forest?

I'd say this is a pretty tough one compared to Raccoon where I frequent a lot. This has a lot of elevation gain and many stream crossing. As long you are prepared you will be fine over 4 days.

Great video and Channel. Hiked the BFT 2 years ago and did it in 2.5 days also. Going again the first weekend in June this year and I will be filming this time. +Ben G. Don't worry too much about bears, in 2 years of hiking at least once a month, I've only seen 1 bear and that was in the Smokies, which is 1 of the most populated bear areas in the US. Just practice eating away from camp and hanging your food bag. Also I'd say April or May before it gets too hot, the elevation here is killer, don't underestimate it. Allow yourself 3 full days just in case.

My biggest concern with hiking and camping is the bugs! what do you use to curb all the bugs especially in the summer? Do you carry a firearm with you?

charger7022 If you get a product called permethrin and spray your clothes, any flying insects that land on your clothes will fall off/die in a few seconds. Other than that bugs really don't bother me much. OFF! brand works fairly well on skin. I don't carry a firearm yet, still looking for the right one. I do carry bear spray when I am alone, although I don't think it's necessary. But if I meet some crazy people that are looking for trouble, they'd get sprayed.

yeah that's what I use in hunting season to keep the ticks off. just never really spent much time in the woods in the summer heat. I just picked up some Repel 100 that's 98% deet so we will see how that works. Working on plan a small canoe trip and camping for a few days up near Tionesta. I never go into the woods unarmed lol maybe im a lil paranoid lol I carry a glock 19 and just recently picked up the glock 43 which is a lil smaller and easier to carry.

+Joseph Toth Sure Joe, It's an AcuRite 00318 Suction cup thermometer: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004V1XJG6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00 It's fairly accurate as long as you don't give it direct sunlight. I've had some pretty off the chart numbers like 108 degrees on 70 degree days. But it gets the job done if you keep it from direct sunlight, I think the plastic casing messes it up.

The guy I meant on the trail when I was travelling uphill on the last day said my map looked terrible and he got his from the same place as you so I'm sure you will be fine. Hey great video. What would you say is the top pros and cons from traditional tent backpacking to a hammock for backpacking? i just cant get a good nights sleep on a sleeping pad in a tent and i also have back pain after hiking for a full day so i decided to look into hammock backpacking. thanks

Len Dizzle This would actually be a good topic for a video in the near future. I'm the same as you, I have a hard time getting a good sleep on the ground, my lower back is curved a lot more than average so when I lay flat on anything but a bed my back wants to arch up forcing me to lay on my side. In a hammock that arch is nonexistent due to the slight curvature of the hammock. With a hammock you can setup virtually anywhere that there are trees, and in the rare cases you cannot find trees, you can set it up it up on the ground with trekking poles (provided you have insulation under you or it's warm enough to not have to use a pad) like a tent. The only cons for using a hammock is at first it is a learning experience, do as much research as you can and practice setting up using trees of different sizes and distance apart. Remember you will still need insulation under you due to conduction. You can start out using your existing sleeping bad and then once you know you like it, look in to getting an underquilt and top quilt. I also highly recommend you check out this playlist (kzbin.info/aero/PLB8752777861C2AA8) by Shug Emery he's a nut but he can build the foundation for a great hammock experience. Good luck with finding what works for you, and let me know if you have any questions I can answer.

You'll love the blackbird, you've made a great choice. Did you get a Warbonnet tarp as well? Me personally I now using whoopie slings, 4 hookworms (similar to the tarp worms but they have hooks on the top so you can remove them if they are wet) and 2 wasps. 8 foot of red zing it for the top of the tarp to connect to the trees, and 4 6' yellow zing it lines for the tent stakes. I do not. It's a little challenging. But I suggest making shorter loops out of it.

+preputnick North loop for a relaxing time and some good views. South loops for Vistas and scenery changed. Some of the south loops is some dirt road walking too. The north loop has one huge uphill on a very rocky section so keep that in mind as well.

44 to The campsite above Slate Run. It should be about 12 ish miles. First outing was last weekend and it was 25 degrees. this Friday is about double that. I'm hooked

Okay, so I'm guessing by the part around 27:00 that you hiked it clockwise.. I'll definitely keep that in mind while on the BFT.

I am not so sure the 90 degree thing with the ridgeline is even a factor worth checking. To meet that "test" I usually end up increasing the suspension angles to nearly 40 degrees, not for comfort...but just to satisfy the ridgeline test. If you are around 30 degrees, no matter how far off the ground and/or how far apart the trees might be...no ridgeline tweaking is needed. Its a high tech red herring IMHO and am not sure if it should be taught to future generations...

I am just going by what Derek Henson (The Ultimate Hang book), Warbonnet Outdoors (maker of the hammock I am using in this video), and Dutchwaregear have said about getting a good lay. I find it works very well at least for me to determine if I'm at the right angle and adjustment.

+m l I went clockwise myself. I did this trip quite a while ago and can't remember a the details. It's a great trail. Shouldn't have to worry about snakes this time of year either.
