If i am not mistaken, the saplings in the tubes are American Chestnut that are being replanted. The tubes allow them to get established without deer and other animals eating them. The American Chestnut was wiped out by blight and by the time the Christmas song was written mentioning them, most had died. After back-cross breeding they have a tree that is like 95% American Chestnut and 5% Chinese Chestnut that is resistant to the blight. Really fascinating project. www.acf.org/

Great video. You can create all kinds of routes in Central Pa. My favorite route is the Northern part of the Quehanna Trail starting at Parker Dam State Park to Sinnemahoning.; to the Donut Hole Trail to Crossfork (maildrop); I then hike either the STS or Black Forest Trail. I then head back to Crossfork (kinny's General Store and (Deb's Country Inn (BEER) then back on Donut Hole trail to Southern part of Quehanna trail loop back to Parker Dam State Park The whole trip is about 225 miles.

Hi guys, I just got back from hiking this trail. I learned about it from this video I believe, thanks for that. It hardly rained on my 8 day hike, but the dew in the morning made everything just as wet. It is a great trail, and very difficult in places, but now that I have it under my belt I feel great about it. I did it counter clockwise, and I don't know if that is harder or not. I was just so glad to get back to the car and put dry socks and shoes on!

Happy New to you both! I'm from near this area you just hiked and didn't realize that they had such nice hiking trails, even tho I've been to Ole Bull State park, Cherry Springs camping with my older brother and family when I was younger. Colton Point State park is one of my favorite places to visit and I go there several times a year for the view. I met my husband on Thanksgiving day in 1990 near Carter Camp near Cherry Springs and was married in 1992. We used to go down there fishing near Cross Forks and he helped stock the creeks in that area. I really enjoyed your video and thanks for sharing 💖

I am very familiar with the whole area, because I have been fishing and camping in the Kettle Creek watershed area for many years, and I love it! The rains were bad during your trip, but the spring time rains are also very harsh and persistent! When a low front settles in over the Kettle Creek valley, it will linger for days, not hours. But, I go there knowing that and prepared for that, so it is not so bad! The spot where you came out at the end of your hike is a very good place also. Kinney's Store is a good place to pick up supplies and a good ice cream. Say "hello" to Susie and Brenda for me. Right next door is Jeff's Bar, ( Jeff is Brenda's husband) if you are looking for a little relief from the weather and a good cold beer. All are very nice people. Across the street is Deb's Restaurant and bar. Also good people, and a good place to pick up a filling meal while you enjoy a cool drink of your choice. I love the area, and I love the people. I go there at least once a year. It used to be more often, when I lived in Ohio, but now that I live in Oklahoma, it is usually just in the spring. Thanks for the video! Bill Pysell

Tell gary if he is going to hike with out a shirt he needs to tan up,he cuts out the white balance of your camera,lol.....loved the video and this area...hiked around this area many times,especially on the twin sisters trail and in the hammersley,bummed you didnt show the pool and the camping area in the hammersley,just after the register box you must of passed. Straight up the hill from that register box on top of the ridge is a rattlesnake den area...is a cool place to bushwack to and see......is called Umbrella rock,for the rock formations up there. those white tubes are used to protect the trees while they grow so the deer dont eat the ends off of them,killing the tree,during the winter/colder months...it's same thing with the fence you showed walking thru where the gate swung up....was very cool you had someone leaving care packages along the way....again,very nice video.......now you can apply for a STS trail patch thru the STS hiking club since you completed the whole thing.

Cool adventure; didn't you had a dry sack for your socks and sleeping clothes? another question; how do you plan a 5 days trip? take 3 days vacation from work plus your 2 days off? I mean when and if one if working? I have been off for some time on medical leave but coming back to hit work probably next week or the following; only have time for 2 days tomorrow and after and planning to do a 10 miles out and back overnighter in the desert here near Las Vegas; couple weeks ago tried Mount Whitney but it was difficult; got altitude sickness and could not make it past 4 miles from the trailhead, camped at the first camp site, outpost camp and head back next day down the mountain; only gained 2000 ft starting from 8500 but those 4 miles I expended almost 6 hours climbing it where I drank only about a liter of water which is part of why I got sick; I would have to try next year sometime between August and September God willing; that was a real big push for me not being in shape but got to test my gear which performed awesome, even when my weight was around 28 pounds that proved to be heavy to climb the mountain; I saw a dude carrying a 65 pound pack! crazy! so for now I would have to content with smaller desert hikes around here; wanted to do the Narrows with the family; we got the gear but it seems there will be no time this year to do it, so we will see what we can do next year..

What do you do to stay in shape, or how often do you get to hike? I've done a few PA trails and really want to do more, I find my work schedule doesn't let me hike as much as I want to, so doing 8 mile days kills me. I can't imagine doing 17 or 18 in a day.

Personally I try to do those Beachbody at home workout programs like Insanity and Body Beast. I go into the program not looking to change my appearance and have a six pack and muscles but to keep my heart healthy and my body conditioned. On weekends I do try and day hike. I walk my dog about a mile a day and try and pick up the pace to where it's nearly uncomfortable to me. A lot of hiking high mileage has to do with conditioning your feet and knees and lowering your base weight. I do plan on making a video on conditioning in the near future. Hope that helps. If you stick with a program like Insanity I guarantee you will start seeing mileage increases.

Do you still use the spot x? I’m looking into buying my first satellite communicator.
@FrozensAdventures2 жыл бұрын
I don't. I'd recommend the Garmin mini though. Many of my friends use that.

@@FrozensAdventures thanks!

what is the purpose of that gate you had to walk through on the trail on day 5?
@FrozensAdventures7 жыл бұрын
I think it was to keep deer from eating seedlings. There was a fence around the entire perimiter. We walked through 2 gates but I only showed one in the video.

Forgive me if I missed it in another video, but have you hiked the PA Mid State Trail?
@FrozensAdventures4 жыл бұрын
I have not. I'll check into it thought. Thanks!
@richwilber33504 жыл бұрын
@@FrozensAdventures I live in State College, PA and it passes right through here. I've been on short sections here, but lately I've been dreaming of the 327 mile thru hike. It even has a guide on Guthook, surprisingly.

I try not to Monday morning quarterback in KZbin reviews, but it's very dangerous to use a windscreen around the base of a canister stove. Maybe if Gary does that in future videos you can put a disclaimer? I'm sure you get newbies to backpacking and that doesn't promote safe backpacking. Aside from that, I enjoy your videos. Thanks!

I told him about it and he said i was lying. I agree with you. I'll annotate on the video.

Great video. Considering doing this hike. I don't recall seeing any other hikers in this video. Did you run into any hikers on the trail?
@FrozensAdventures4 жыл бұрын
I don't think we did. Weather forecast want the greatest so that could be why

Is it possible to bikepack this trail?
@FrozensAdventures6 жыл бұрын
I would say yes but check rules and regulations.

Great video! Where do you get your paper maps?

Pine Creek outfitters. They sell very good maps link in the video and the video description.

I've noticed you've hiked alot of State Forest trails. Are you trying to achieve the Pa State Forest Trails Award? Im from the scranton area and your videos are great guides to trails I plan on hiking.
@FrozensAdventures8 жыл бұрын
Not going for any award really, actually didn't even know that was a real thing. We just look for other places that people have recommended on reddit

Just curious. Another recommendation is the Loyalsock Trail. It's almost 60 miles and is located around Williamsport, Pa

What distance did you and Gary have to drive from home ground to the STS?
