The FrSky X10 / X10S might be the best FrSky radio that you can buy. The FrOS operating system that comes on it is surprisingly functional, but if you're a real power-user, you'll install OpenTX on it THE MINUTE YOU GET IT.
But be careful, because there are a few mistakes that can brick your radio!
In this video, I'll show you how to flash OpenTX to the FrSky Horus X10 / X10s.
I'll also address the, "More than one DFU capable USB device" error that sometimes occurs.

I only ended up using 1 microSD? Firmware and Logs folders were duplicates on microSD card content import. I got a prompt to over write or replace. Hit a few snags but it looks like it works. Thanks

Hi Joshua. This video really helped me. Everything went well. Hovever i have binding issues. My horus is the eu version, and i did not tick of the eu option in settingit up in companion. Would this cause the binding or is the eu option not doing anything but removing unnecessary features? My reciever is a g-rx6 flashed to ACCESS fw version. The rx does go into bind status and the horus is chirping along searching for it... Any tip would be much appreciated!

Wanted to say thanks for this video. I just received my X10 Express, and while I am new to FrOS and to OpenTX so would need to learn both, I figured there would be better support from the community if I went with OpenTX. I just successfully flashed OpenTX onto my X10 thanks to this easy to follow example. I would have been lost on the USB driver fix! Do you have any videos explaining transmitter and receiver protocols? I am getting a bit overwhelmed trying to wrap my head around all of the brands, compatibilities, and reverse compatibilities. Would an external multi-module help me out with connecting to more legacy receivers? Thanks again!

Programmer here: You do a backup of not just the files but of the image. An image file is very different than just the files and folders. It contains a filesystem and a boot loader image that knows where to start the boot process from. Also, you have problems with your usb plug when you don't use one directly connected to your PC.

Hi, I struggling to figure out what battery options do I have for Horus X10S Express? tried 18650 batteries and they don't last. What other alternatives do we have and who is supply such batteries? Also, where can i find documentation of Horus X10S Bluetooth module? What kind of Bluetooth module is inside the radio? When I enable it for telemetry no phone (Android or iPhone) is picking up the Bluetooth signal.

LOL thats a funny video. I remember spending a day and half trying too get open tx and sd card too match up. It gets easier once you done it a few times, coming from spektrum it took me all a day and half another to get all figured out. But now my buddies ask me too update there Qx7s and x10 and lua scripts. I really like Taranis radios alot but there tricky too learn I figure thats because of how you can change so much. I still have my spektrum dx8 but only use it for my tiny whoops.

JB First I am not a Patrion, however long time securiber. So if you don’t respond I guess I get it. I wanted to buy an additional transmitter to leave one at my camp. Looked at all the new stuff and decided to stay with FrSky as I already have two of them. Found a Horis X10S at a good price and bought it. Knowing that I could change it to Open TX. Seemed easy enough. I am using Version 2.3.14 - 2021-7-23 SD Card 480x272.23 3V0038. Followed some on instructions 12-6-2017. All went well and when I was completed i hit the power button and Heard "Welcome to Open TX" but got a message about the throttle. Hit escape and then calibrated the sticks. Powered up again same thing. Checked everything in set up in Open TX. I did find that for some reason if I Hold the Pitch at the bottom and power off the message goes away. It seems like it is on Mode one set up?? I am really stuck, might you have any ideas? Thank you in advance. Ben Herr

Go to Radio Setup change the radio to Mode 2. It thinks the throttle is on the right because it defaults to Mode 1.

Yo Joshua.. IMO the micro/ mini USB should come out of top of the radio.. If it comes out the bottom like the QX7 for us pinchers / neck strap guys the cable gets in the way when you try and rest it against yourself. Coming out the top sorts everyone out xx

In Companion, "download models and settings from radio" to pull them off your X9D. Then connect to the Horus and "upload models and settings". You can also copy/paste just the models using the right-click menu.

Hi Joshua, I have just installed OPEN Tx on my Horus X10 and the gods of firmware updates have smiled and blessed me. However, a couple of things gave me cause for concern during your video which I watched five times. You mention you need two SD cards but only use one. You create a firmware and log folder on your newly formatted SD card but when you write the new card contents those folders are already there in the new contents. Lastly if you get a Mac you'll never need the driver fixer ever again. Thanks again for your video I have never been so nervous as I was when hitting the flash firmware button at the end especially since it looked like it had gone 25% and stopped but when I looked at the detail I could see it loading. Keep up the good work and I just need to find a manual for OPEN Tx do you have any suggestions? Regards Richard

Hi, Thanks a lot for the great video; Recently I bought Horus X10S, I flashed it to OpenTx 2.2.1. When I tried to use my EzUHF external module I realized that the module is not powering up. Looking at JR module connectors of the Horus , I did below tests on both FrOS and OpenTx operating systems on Horus X10S: 1. In FrOS, the module powers up and everything works normal. The voltage between Vmain and GND measured 6V. 2. In OpenTx, the module doesn't power up! The voltage between Vmain and GND is almost Zero, the Voltage between Vmain and S.P is 6V. I switched my negative wire from GND to S.P but when I connect the module voltage drops to 3V from 6V and it cannot power up the module. 3. I used an external battery and it worked good, I had signal too. I have no programing skills, but I feel OpenTx messes up with the voltage regulators at module bay and also at trainer port ( I had similar issue with trainer port when I was trying to use head tracker - the negative wire was switched to other pin when on OpenTx, I fixed it by shorting 2nd and 3rd rings of my cable connector). Can you please advise if there's any solution for this issue.

The model type in the Wizard doesn't mean much. It just sets up the initial four control channels. Just set up a 4 channel plane and that will work fine.

The rotary switch is just moving an aux channel. There's nothing unique about it.

When you select the drop down in Flight mode you get a list of all SWITCHES - Including 6P_1, 6P_2 etc ... If you choose any other switch, flight modes can be selected. However, when you choose the 6P set it won't select. Is it really a switch or just an indented proportional chanel ? - If it's the latter, why is it on the switch list ? - Could this be an OpenTx error ?

Well i flashed a X10S for a friend and it was exactly like flashing my Taranis X9D+! I did not face any issue so far! However i did not know about the RF internal module which needs FrSky OS in order to be updated >.< I did not backup anything! Ooops! I feel guilty now, should i report this to my friend? Technical videos are so useful because the information is obscure and hard to understand - and this makes it easy. BUT! the people who are helped by your videos are limited. Like this video has a limited market. I think you need to make videos on things that are cutting edge and apply to a large group in the community, then make videos on obscure things so you help small groups, and finally pepper if with what ever 2' hype entertainment that will help you grab new subs and expose people to new things. I'm making a technical video because I feel like there isn't enough information about things that are relevant to me and thousands of others (at least will be soon). "BetaFlight F7 Flight Controller with 3.3 Kalman- Buyer beware?" This would be something I would expect you to talk about, don't get me wrong your the man and keep it up, just some feedback. I started watching UAV futures because it helped me get into FPV on a budget. "99$ build!" I learned a lot but man china crap. Now I feel like he's a salesman for banggood and gearbest - I still appreciate him and what he does - but it's different now... Priorities maybe? Anyways, Please keep us the awesome work and thanks for everything!

Yes you can flash any receiver or accessories using any of the range of FRsky transmitters, be careful because using the X9D+ requires the special cable with + and - reversed. On the X10S its much simpler because you can use a standard servo cable plugged into the port located next to the USB port labelled "S" on the rear of the transmitter for flashing accessories such as receivers.

Yes you can transfer your models to this radio. It will work with your existing models.

After flashing my Horus x10 with openTX I can not get it bind to xm receiver. Everything works fine with taranix x7 however if I try to repeat same procedure with my horus it doesnt work. With taranis I do following steps. 1. hold the bind button on the xm receiver 2. power it up 3. two leds (red and green) give solid light 4. turn on taranis 5. press bind on the taranis 6. red led on the xm receiver start flashing 7. turn off receiver 8. turn off taranis 9. power on both 10. green light on the xm receiver - solid light and everything works fine Now when I do the same with horus, I can not get to the 6th point (looks like receiver doesnt get signal from transmitter) Is there any different method to bind horus with opentx to the receiver?

The new version of opentx makes you pick channel and telemetry mode before it goes into binding. Is that the issue? I am going to guess that the X7 has EU firmware and the Horus has FCC firmware or something like that, and that is why the XM+ won't bind. The receiver will only bind if it matches the firmware (EU or FCC) on the radio.

Thanks Joshua I tried different modes with or without telemetry and still doesnt work. I think you are right, horus has FCC firmware while xm receiver and taranis are EU. Do you know if its possible to change Horus firmware from FCC to EU (I did research however I couldnt find any information- only that I need to flash internal xjt module with EU firmware but I couldnt find it)?

OK I figured it out - if somone looking to change HOrus x10 firmware to Eu LBT from FCC or the other way around here its the solution: Quote from rcgroups.com comment by Jet_Flyer: "You will need go back to FrOS and then do the regular FrOS update using the FrOS NEU bin. That will flash the IXJT to NEU. Then you can go back to OpenTX. Hopefully you made a FrOS back up with Companion that makes it easy to get back to FrOS. While I was transferring my files to the SD card in the Horus, it was only transferring at a rate of 40 KB/s. It took 1 hour! First off why did it take so long? Is my Mini USB cable just crap? Also why couldn't i have just transfer that 135MB of data right to the Micro SD card while it was in my SD card slot? That would have been 10 times faster and I already had it plugged in when I created the "LOG" and "FIRMWARE" folders. By the way thank you for all your hard work making these videos to help the community and the hobby!

No it's just super slow and I don't know why. I always remove my SD card.

Question if I update my open tx on my x10S do I have to re set all my quads in betaflight switches?? I know when you flash it for the first time you have to set all the alarms and, timers and switches in betaflight but if it is just updating would I have to set my alarms and timers as well?? Updating opentx to a new version typically does not wipe the model configuration but you should back up the models in OpenTX Companion first just in case.

Have you noticed that on any theme other than the default theme (in OpenTX) causes the USB connection to the computer to stop working? I guess really it’s Mass Storage that stops working since everything is done via MicroSD on the Horuses (Hora?). I have no idea why this would be, so maybe it’s just me...

I installed OpenTX2.2.2 a while back, but I didn't enable LuaC (check box). Can I just plug my radio back into Companion and check it OR do I need to reflash all of OpenTX again and start over?

You need to re-flash but you won't lose your models and settings.

Did it and done. I now have the LuaC options on my radio. I didn’t change SD card contents. There is still a small lag time for luaC when loading VTX options to edit on the radio, but it’s livable. Maybe ten seconds to load all the options

Is it possible to copy the sd card files from nightly builds onto the sd card directly while it is inserted into my computer rather than through the usb on my Horus?

Yeah if you put the card into a card reader you can just copy them over that way. The USB plug just basically acts as a card reader.

What's up Josh. When ever my Isdt q6 plus charger says it's done charging it still looks as though it's charging a little. The amps are still going up and down on the left of the screen. It's not much but it's doing it is it trickle charging? Have you noticed that?

Joshua Bardwell it says fast charge done and beeps then it says charge done and beeps then it says like .4 amps ..3 amps .2 amps and I thought it was going to go all the way down but goes back up as much as .4 again. I haven't just left it alone though to see how long it's going to do that and I don't know if it's really charging still but that's what it looks like until I hit the button then it stops.

Is it possible to flash OpenTX to my Horus and then still be able to update Frsky Rx firmware, or do I have to have FrOS installed to flash new Frsky Rx firmware from my Horus?

You must have FrOS to update the internal module. This is why it is essential to back up FrOS and be able to restore it.

I’m going to use an r9m and r9 slim Rx, so I only care about updating those two things. If I’m using an external modual like the r9m or crossfire then I don’t need to worry about updating the Horus internal modual, correct? However, I do need to update the external modual (r9m) and the Rx.
