Until now, if you wanted a FrSky receiver with telemetry, you had to spend about $25 on an XSR or an X4R-SB. FrSky has just released the R-XSR. It's $20. It's tiny. It supports SmartPort telemetry. And it's got redundant capability. If you want a FrSky telemetry receiver, the R-XSR seems like the new go-to. On top of that, the XSR is now marked down to about $15 everywhere I looked!

Thanks again Joshua! Two months ago when I started with FPV I barley knew what that acronym meant. Now, very much thanks to you and your knowledge, I know that acronym as well as what SBUS means, what kind of dinosaur a Taranis is and can solder needed repairs to my drones! I and many others are truly thankful for your time, knowledge and mentorship.

I've been using Frsky since 2011/2012, bought the DHT-u telemetry module for my 72mhz Futaba 9z. Was a diehard Futaba Fasst guy before but knew they were in trouble with Frsky. Definitely, an RC gamechanger. I was one of the first in line to buy a Taranis, still an excellent radio especially with the new hall effect gimbals!!. This receiver is absolutely amazing! Its shockingly small, little larger than my thumbnail. My range is just as good if not better than other FrSky receivers. Have done the "RSSI foxhunt" after crashing in the woods, I still kept signal in spots that my previous FrSky recievers would not. Frsky went through a lot of hardware changes, but its been worth it.

Jumping Jehoshaphat! I saw this video and had to have one. Happy to report: I am not disappointed! I had trouble trying to bind it with the TX. As I was pushing the little button with my thumbnail, the antennas kept popping off. Hot glue solved that issue. It is now in my quad, just forward of the PDB. Nested between the ESC power cables. Antenna wires are shrink wrapped to two small zip ties for stability, then, those are zip tied to the top deck/standoff at the front of the craft at as close to 90* angle as I could. Thanks brother! Keep up the awesome videos. I like how you throw in some humor and science to back up what you're saying.

Hi @Joshua Bardwell. I would like your expert input on this issue: I am using a TX12 EdgeTX and Jumper R1, Frsky XM+ and Jumper R8 receivers connected to SBUS decoder. When power is applied to the receiver, they move servos connected to most channels from dead center to -100 or +100 than back to center. That does not happen to the R8. I tried to configure the failsafe on every mode available but there is no change. Is it a normal behavior for these tiny receivers? Because I need it to keep steady dead center/neutral on all channels when they are powered on.

Josh, I'm an avid follower of your channel and I am always learning new things with each and every thing you post. I know this would be much more appropriate for one of your Q&A sessions, but I've been scrambling the internet trying to find a quick suggestion/solution. Anyways I've been building/tinkering/frying/ quads and components for a few months now and recently compiled a few new components together so I can get up in the air again. I'm on a relatively tight (or non existent) budget at the moment, so I try and make the best out of what I have. I'm running an Omnibus f4 with 3.2, Spektrum sat Rx, and kingkong 2300kv motots, and just installed 4x dys DS20A ESC's. When I plug in my battery (w/ smoke stopper of course) They all power on, but the beeping indicators are way out of sync of one another. I tried using BLHeli configurator to update and calibrate, but only 2 of the escs will show up, or sometimes 3, or sometimes none. It doesn't make sense to me. I can calibrate them by using the motor tab in Betaflight, and my quad will fly in the air, not gracefully, but I'm not having cataclysmic failures (yet). I just want to know why some of my esc's won't show up on BLHELI, because I want to update the firmware. My first guess would be in the signal wires between ESC and FC? I've checked them for soldering errors, and all seem okay. I dont have any of the ESCS running a ground wire to the FC. I also soldered the signal wires directly to the FC using through-hole style for cleanliness. If you could toss me any suggestions or explanations as to why my ESCS won't calibrate collectively or why only some of them show up in BLHeli config, I'd be very appreciative. -Also, I know a bunch of you all that watch these videos are far more knowledgeable than myself and I would also appreciate if any feedback you all could provide. Thanks in advance.

Just got mine and installed it with redundancy with an XM+. I just exchanged the antennas with 1/4 wave ones. did a range test today (see my channel) and the only thing that stopped me was the video signal. No low signal alerts, everything good. I went 0.99 miles away (1589m) and everything OK ;)

Joshua, thanks for all the amazing knowledge you share with us! It makes it so much easier to be in this hobby. It would be incredibly helpful if you explained some of the differences and different application of the various micro Rx models made by Frsky. Every time I go to buy a new Rx I am faced with trying to decide which one is best for my application. It would be great if youmsaid "don't waste your money on this" or "this is the only one you need to think about". I'm certainly not lazy about research but your experience and knowledge would be greatly appreciated and give many a lot of confidence when making purchases. Thanks again, keep up the great work !

After the about a month or so of playing with the R-XSR, I can definitively say the range isn't what it should be. At best, I get 200-300 meters before my range warning goes off. I've tested this on two seperate copters both with new R-XSR's in an open field with no obstructions. (EU firmware with EU Taranis) When i get the chance, i'll swap back to using the XM receiver as at least I'd get 500 + meters before experiencing a noticeable reduction in signal strength.

I have one of these going in my next build - about 2 weeks ago I bought 2 XSRs @$15 (hard to pass that up), and an R-XSR to evaluate. If I had known about the Sbus inputs, all 3 would have been Rs. (wondered what the "R" stood for) (*#1) I fly giant scale fixed wing (neglected as of late due to quad fever) and all those are equipped with redundant setups, using a X8R and a XM+ in the far wing, both on independent batteries (total of 4 receiver inputs). Thanks for the tip on using the Module to backup the TX as well, I may implement that on my giant scale as well. It never occurred to me.(*#2) I've been looking for a way of using a backup Tx since I bought my Horus last spring. Now for 20 bucks and a few grams, I can use either my Horus or Taranis with my main quad. I'm not a hotshot pilot or racing (yet) so the 12grams or so won't matter. I really did learn something today, (2 major items actually*) and it's often your videos where I don't expect much new that are full of great stuff. Thanks Joshua, for doing our homework for us. I'm one of the weirdos who like antennas soldered, for the security reason, I find the Ipex work well if you assemble everything to get the orientation adjusted, then add a tiny dab of the Chinese low viscosity white RTV (flowable - Kafuter brand - best deal at a HK hobbyking.com/en_us/k703-silicone-glue.html?___store=en_us). It holds securely, but is easily removed by nicking with a #11 Xacto and lifting with a small screwdiver. Best of both systems. You can re-heatshrink over the connectors if orientation permits for even more protection. PS, I also have 3 el cheapo micro receivers from BG that were 6 bucks a copy. They're like a non-diversity XM+, but those are intended for whoop or indoor builds, as I wouldn't trust the control of a 1200w spinning blade of death machine to the cheapest Banggood has. (same reason my GS planes have redundant diversity and Rx power systems), they will all leave a mark. They seem to be the one used in a some production FrSky flavor Tiny Whoops and are a good add-on if you're a BG customer. They are smaller than an XM+ (barely larger than the SMD chip). Scott
@JoshuaBardwell

Those micro SBUS receivers are usually D8 protocol, which means they don't do SmartPort telemetry and they don't allow Failsafe configuration from the radio. Those are deal-breakers for me in most every case. Glad you learn something from the videos.

I've got a lot of stuff on the shelf that didn't make the cut. Seems to be the nature of this game. Unless you can afford to buy the best of everything, and sometime even that isn't enough. Occasionally parts just don't work out or aren't what you thought/expected. So you put them up and hope someday you or a friend wiIl use them. I don't think anybody makes a d16 telemetry whoop size Rx though. (but I'm frequently wrong on such things) I don't use anything I don't trust or doesn't make me happy. I watched you do it not long ago in the Lemon build (Camera). It happens to us all. That is one of the major reasons I support you, you do a lot of good for people, and the few bucks of patreon I spend are more than offset by what I learn and the money I save not buying junk or incorrect parts. It's good for the hobby there is few of you who are able to make a living in it and are the voice of the little guy to the industry. We have a unique mix of people all working together in this thing that no other discipline enjoys. It's our strength, the extreme diversity in it's community. No matter your problem, there's somebody out there sharing it and somebody who knows the solution. I just can't afford to spend the time you do checking out all the parts available, but somehow you seem to keep up and have covered most parts I am looking at before I buy. The information you provide is a 'force multiplier' for the community. We can spend more of our free time building & flying, not researching and reading Chinese translations trying to figure out how to hook something up. I usually get in trouble at 3am when I go on to order the odd part, and next thing you know I've got a couple hundred bucks worth of 'stuff' enroute. Paypal credit can be hazardous at 3am. Then you wake up in the morning with a 'parts hangover'.... and a bill... I think that's how I came by the elcheepo receivers... Thanks! Scott

While it's certainly possible to use it with 2 transmitter modules, I doubt that that was their intention. I think it was more intended for binding 2 chained receivers to a single transmitter module. Then you can have 2 receivers listening, have good antenna polarisation in all 3 dimensions, and in the case of models with many RF shadow areas (e.g. carbon sailplanes) also have antennas in more visible places. What I do wonder about though what is the strategy for chaining multiple receivers together where 2 or more support telemetry: From what I can find in the manuals, I don't see any means to disable telemetry in telemetry-receivers. This is important because it doesn't make sense to transmit telemetry from more than 1 of them at the same time. What I really wish FrSky would do is make their receivers programmable using PC/smartphone apps as is done by EzUHF, DTF-UHF, etc. so that users can define which features they wish to enable/disable and which channels (or RSSI) is output on which ports. That'll be a winning move on their behalf IMHO.

Hey Joshua! I've got a question, and would love to know if you have an answer to it: So, about 3 months ago, i crashed my quad fullspeed topdown intro a concrete block, i think one of my motors was bad which made it turn off for a split second mid punch, when it turned back on, i was too late and made a hard smack - things i broke when it happened The damage was honestly not too bad, my VTX antenna had been ripped off the print so that burnt out. Also all 4 motors had died. After ordering these parts and rebuilding it all, it flew amazing, total cost was about 70$. (Its a 3S toothpick, Eachine Novice III to be exact) When i took it back out for its first flight, i noticed the RSSI was really low and it fell out of the sky about 10 meters away from me, i noticed one of the antenna's was cut off, i bought a set of new ones, put them on but it made no difference (its a ESC / Receiver combo) so no external receiver i checked all my settings in BF, rebound to my transmitter but no luck, do you think i killed the esc / receiver combo or a different issue? Here's a link to the esc / receiver: www.banggood.com/Eachine-AIO-F4-Flight-Controller-12A-2-4S-ESC-Frsky-Receiver-Part-for-Novice-III-Viswhoop-FPV-Racing-Drone-p-1649353.html?cur_warehouse=CN&rmmds=search If it would be this part, could i add a external micro receiver to it? Also, its not my transmitter, as my tinywhoop works fine with it and has good range Thanks in advance.

I guess the new r-xsr boards have little pads you can solder to get the (un)inverted sbus and smart port signals from. The smart port pad has a P next to it and the sbus has a B next to it. This was an update to the receiver as 13 October 2017 according to OscarLiang.com

Great to see a small one with telemetry. @Joshua I love your videos and almost watched all of them. Some are now outdated (old BF versions) but nonetheless very instructive. After the build video I would love to see what are things you do on the software side, there are so many new features and advices are spread across multiple videos it's hard to keep track. What are all the things you do when you configure a new quad from scratch? I hook it up to the flight controller and get rotating light flashing Blue, red and then green ... The only thing I find in the manual may be it's not set up right with the controller...but when I set up the flight controller to either cppm or sbus... It doesn't change. Lights still flash in rotation.. Any ideas? I've changed the cable so the sbus/cppm output is on the 4th pin instead of the third s port. THanks

When I do I am not getting the full range for mapping within betaflight. The switches mapping only at 1500 2000 so 3way switches I can only use as 2 and something different for my arm switch which is a 2way acknowledges the initial movement but sticks on arm in betaflight. This happening on 3 different FCs as well so not isolated to that? Any ideas I've search and posted several times and have had no luck. Just got thru my first builds too and never thought this would get me. The receivers I'm using is this one your reviewing and the XM+

I'm not sure what is going wrong but surely it's in the Mixer of the Taranis. When you create a new mix for the switch, has it got weight of 100 and offset of 0?

Joshua Bardwell yes I've followed a KZbin video on how to do it sadly the gentleman who made video passed in an accident I here, could it be a firmware update problem cause I also have an error accessing the SD card tried several so know that's not the card. I had forgotten about that and just put a card back in today. Are you supposed to change Diff to Expo or Function cause that's really only thing I've haven't tried. The video on KZbin I'm talking about is the guy Blue Falcon Experience. Maybe he was wrong I don't know. First you setup in inputs correct? Chose the switch for that input than in mixer you select positions of the switches correct?

I think I found issue watched some old videos from you and Stuart I don't need got into inputs, and the switch range I think the output ranges are all 1500 2000 not 1000 2000, I will go check that in morning.

Having a nightmare wiring an RSXR up to my Darkmax, I've been trying inverted and un-inverted SBUS signals from RSXR to PPM/SBUS(RX6) on the FC but can get no response showing in Betaflight (10.4.0 osx) 'receiver' tab. The previous receiver was an XM and worked fine (after switching ports to RX6). The Darkmax has an Artower F4 FC with latest OmnibusF4sd firmware (fw). The RSXR - fw 171009 (lbt) binds fine to Taranis X9d - fw 2.2.2 (lbt). I understand that s'port from the RSXR can connect to RX3 on the FC for telemetry, and I can also combine this with the s'port from the GPS sensor I haven't got to yet. The Artower F4 also has a plug for DSM(RX1) which I don't know what to do with.

RXSR yellow wire (smartport) to the UART TX pad on any F3 or F7 flight controller. F4 flight controller needs an inverted UART TX pad, which will typically be labeled as SmartPort or T(elemetry). If you have an F4 flight controller with no telemetry pad, here is the approach that will work: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIWXp5lsapxoiq8

Typically, the way affiliate links work is, when you click it, you set a cookie. The cookie might last for as little as 24 hours or as long as maybe 2 weeks typically. It could be longer, but it seldom is. Any purchase you make while the cookie is present on your browser, the affiliate gets credit for. If you click a different affiliate link, the new cookie usually replaces the old one. So the safest thing to do is to click on one of my affiliate links immediately before you add the items to your cart and purchase.

@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
Lua script doesn't work unless you update the firmware. Telemetry problem may be because inversion is not working. You can't fix inversion via the CLI. You can only tell the FC whether it should expect to see an inverted telemetry signal. If you bought a new R-XSR, there is an uninverted smartport pad. Use that, and set telemetry inversion to off. Then you should be able to use any UART RX pad.

@daythis2825
@daythis2825 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Joshua! I think there are some mistakes in your R-Xsr introduction... The redundancy mode is a Master/Slave mode so you only can bind one receiver (slave one) and the R-XSR will manage which receiver will works. By this way you can't have a separated Tx and you don't need an external module. What I say is only valid if they didn't changed the operating mode of redundancy.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
I took my info from the R-XSR manual, which seems to instruct binding two receivers (such as an R-XSR and an XM+). The R-XSR will manage which signal is inbound yes. But I don't see why you couldn't bind a different Taranis to the XM+ than the R-XSR, or use an external module instead of binding the same radio or module to both.

The XSR-M is fine too, but it's 20x20mm whereas the R-XSR is 16x11mm so a bit smaller. For a micro build with a 20mm stack I would consider the XSR-M, but otherwise I would lean towards the R-XSR. Another advantage of the XSR-M though is that it outputs PPM, although these days nearly everything supports SBUS.

It's funny no one mentions this when comparing the xm+ to xsr and it's derivatives, the RSSI output on an sbus channel, which unlike the hack where you send it back to the RX through a spare channel, is a real recieved rssi value, and thus is actually meaningful and responsive. I gave up on the xsr when I found that the RSSI signal I got wasn't worth a damn. In dodgy signal areas, it would lock up while still showing a decent RSSI value on screen, thenget control back, all while never showing the dropout. The XM+ has probably the most accurate rssi reading i've come across on an frsky reciever, even compared to using the analog output from other rx's.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 7 жыл бұрын
It's true, but personally I prefer the audible RSSI alert you get from the Taranis to one in the OSD. And the XM+ does not give that because it's not sending telemetry back to the radio.

I didn't know that about the RSSI on an SBUS channel and just found it in the XM+ manual. Thanks for the tip. I just wish FrSky would make their channel outputs user configurable on all their receivers.

Man I switch to the qx7 just to start using the rxsr. I have osd and still am finding I get into the flight a bit too much and don't stop paying attention to my osd voltage read out then bam! drops like a hammer due to deader than dead lipo. I decided I need telem on my radio and set it to vibrate on critical battery.
