I drove my Toyota Camry for fifteen years and treated it the same way…like it was new. It still looked amazing when it bit the dust. Every time I got in my car, especially after it was paid for, I thanked God for it. Every single time. I was thankful to not have a payment and to have a reliable car.

So much of saving is about changing your head. Instead of thinking "I'm depriving myself by not eating out" think "I choose to bring my lunch because I want to take my family on a nice vacation."

All great advice Robin! I retired 18 months ago. My husband is still working. We have no credit card debt. When my car was paid off we actually kept on with the monthly payment but put it in a savings account and will pay cash for our next vehicle. I calculated our dining out with your husband's method and we are right in that sweet spot. I cook 6 nights a week, mean plan, and shop from a list of only what we need. I'm with you on the seasonal decor. I am not tempted to buy more decor for holidays and just rotate what I have. Take care!

Thank you, Robin! This was a great video and I really needed the reminder. I actually think this topic needs to be talked about more in women's Bible study groups, too. In all areas of our life, the biblical concept of self-control is so rewarding. Whether it's being mindful about spending, eating, the words we speaks, what we expose our minds to, our emotions...it all has great rewards. I really struggled in one area this past year because the consignment clothing stores didn't feel like a good option for a while. The on-line clothing sales got me! Fortunately, every purchase fit, was my style and color preference. My remedy has been to return to the 10 item wardrobe. I've put away the purchases I don't currently need in a bin. As my current wardrobe pieces wear out, I will replace with the items in my storage bin before I buy another item. I encourage other women in a similar situation or purchasing regrets to find creative ways to redirect those purchases; give them as gifts, put away for later, donate, whatever.♥️🇨🇦

So many great tips! We cured our eating out habit painlessly when we moved to a tiny town in a rural area - no restaurants! ;) When we want a really nice meal, we will set aside a portion of our grocery budget and buy quality ingredients to make a luxurious meal at home. It usually ends up being 2-3 meals with leftovers, and we know exactly what went into it! My husband and older daughter have mastered a wonderful Chinese meal that puts Panda Express to shame! :D

For my family, going to the movie theater has always been reserved for birthdays. On or near each person's birthday, the birthday boy/girl gets to pick the movie we see together. We use to do activities together as a family once a month such as going to a museum or zoo in the city (use to get family memberships as a Christmas gift from my mom), bowling, local parks, or save up for a day at the amusement or water park. Now my kids are adults and I am homebound, so our family entertainment is Dinner (delivery/take out) and (board) Game Night once a week and Dinner and Movie Night (at home) once a month.

Such good information in this video, Robin. Thanks for sharing! I agree with your comments on home decor, especially seasonal. Less is more! One way to save, especially if you're just stating out, is to shop the day after the holiday when all the items are marked down. Fewer things to choose from, but you won't be tempted to "go all out". You've really gotten your money's worth on your car! That's impressive! I think when you get a new one, you will be amazed at all the new safety features, so that's something else to consider when deciding when to trade in.

We have just enjoyed 6 weeks of long service leave. We are aggressively working towards FIRE within 5 years. We tried to practice living like we were retired for the last 6 weeks. We realised we live an abundantly simply lifestyle for our greatest contentment. We spent only if it was intentional and was going to give us value, joy or meet a need. We have affirmed our values compass and are excited to work towards our FIRE number knowing it will allow us to live our best life. Your tips resonated strongly with us. Thankyou

Thank you for your great tips. I have recently been on a decluttering binge. I even put my Keurig away and I don’t even miss it. I can make a small pot of decaf in the afternoon just as quickly and it’s so much cheaper. Years ago we redecorated our family room. The decorator brought over a ton of cute accessories and we bought every one! I have spent the last nine years wishing I hadn’t , lol! And, trying to sell them at garage sales. This year we participated in a neighborhood garage sale and I was brutal about getting things out of the house. Everything that didn’t sell got donated. I have some empty cabinets now and I love it! Oh to have such wisdom when we’re young!

My hubby and I are natural Scrooge’s as we both grew up very poor. Now we are empty nesters we don’t need to anymore but habits of a lifetime are hard to change. Excellent tips! But what I loved the most was seeing your wedding picture along with the pics of your growing family. So precious! It was hilarious when you were cutting your son’s hair--watching Austin watch the hair fall to the ground. He is hilarious! One of the biggest things I’ve had to learn finance wise is to not compare my life to other people’s lives. Especially on social media and KZbin. I have to remember that many of them are getting these products for free, as influencers, so I have to make sure that if I am purchasing something that they are showcasing on their channel, that it’s something I actually need. And another practice I do on Amazon is I’ll place some thing in my cart and wait 24 hours before I buy it. Nine times out of 10 I don’t make the purchase.

Thank you Michele! You are absolutely right - comparison is the thief of joy. I do that with my Amazon cart too - it’s a great tip that really works!!! 👍😄💛

For those of you with aging parents - thrift stores have lots of walkers, wheelie walkers, toilet riser seats, and sometimes even lift chairs. Started noticing this stuff in the stores after having spent so much money for an older relative. Just hope it might help someone else out. Maybe if you see a need coming down the line you could pick something up frugally and stash it for future need. Because you might need this stuff at a moment's notice and be able to help someone out.

We too have learned to subscribe to this kind of living and have truly found joy in it over the 37 years of our marriage. There are two significant by products of this 1. It made my husband more of a team, working together to achieve our goals. ( at times it was almost fun to see what we could do ). 2. And probably one of the most important is the lessons it taught our children. (We really weren’t thinking about this at the time). It has been such a blessing to see our oldest daughter and her husband to actually be totally debt free in the 10th year of their marriage including having their home paid off. And while raising 2 kids. Our younger daughter and her husband just bought their first home in the spring after paying off all their student loans, cars and all other debts. I am so proud of them all. Thanks again for your videos.

I think seasonal decorating is quite an American concept. Besides Christmas it’s not something we tend to do in Australia and it was new to me when I started following KZbin and visited the US last year. It’s a nice idea though and with some creativity and use of natural objects (pine cones, shells and driftwood , fresh flowers, etc) can still be economical.

Love this!!! Me and my husband are huge Dave Ramsey fans too!! We have all consumer debt paid off and are working hard to pay off our house in the next 6-7 years!! And we are 28 and 30. God's ways are truly the best! My hardest thing to be content with is my wordrobe. I love buying a new outfit or 2 in spring and fall. We do budget "fun money" each month so I save mine up to purchase my outfits. But it's still hard tho being content. Our dynamic is similar to yours, my husband is the super money saver so I've had to reel myself in lol.

Such a great video, Robin! I sure wish I would have had access to helpful videos like this when we were just starting out as a family. Your comments about seasonal home decor are spot on. I love it and now that I'm retired, I find myself in the process of downsizing and letting go of so much of it. It is hard! Wished I'd never started on that trend. Thanks so much for your words of wisdom!

r Robin...you had me in total agreement until, you picked on pillows and decore. LOLOLOL I love my pillows (6 king) on our bed. As fore decore I have made intentional decisions...I make seasonal pillowcases and a group of 5 seasonal decorations 1 for each family member. we used to drive old cars for over 20 yrs but when repairs are very frequent more than a small monthly car payment. It is time to give up the ghost. HUGS FROM FLORIDA...

This was a great video and I agree with pretty much everything you said. We didn’t have a lot of money in the early years but my husband chose to put some of his salary into a superannuation fund which you can’t touch until you retire and many times i wished he hadn’t , lol, but we are retired now and are debt free. We took the kids camping all over Australia (we live in Adelaide) as these were cheap holidays, and we always had fun. Buying the best quality you can afford is good advice because if you take care of it it will last. Tfs 💕

Great tips , Robin! My car is over 20 years old and I treated like it’s new too! I have my jeans dry cleaned so I can wear each one for a whole week and it looks like a clean pair each time. Before I used to just wash it in the washing machine and could only wear it ones maybe twice before I had to wear a different pair Thank you again! Always love your videos 💗

Hello, I would like to share something I do about seasonal decorating. A couple years ago my husband wanted to host a formal family dinner. We don't have all the "formal" things for that nor did I want to invest in that and, as you said "dust it, store it, etc". So I headed to the local thrift shop. I decorated our whole table and got supplies for the games for under $25. The most expensive thing I bought was a dish set on ebay of the 12 days of Christmas, those were for dessert. After the party, I re-donated all the items except the 12 days dishes. No storing, no stress and it cost me very little. I ended up doing this for Easter as well. It is very satisfying to go with a budget, usually for me no more than $10, and a focus of what area I want to decorate. Usually it's what I call a "seasonal table"- a small table in my living room, and the center of my dinning table. That's it. So I go with a focus on those 2 areas and my budget and see what I can come up with. It's fun and each year it's different. Just my tid-bits. God bless you!

This is such a helpful video Robin. We are going through a refinance of our home, and to prepare, I tightened our spending a ton. I'm amazed at how much we were spending each month on unnecessary things. Now we will have more money to save and more time to enjoy together. I even gave myself a mani/pedi last week and was amazed at how much more relaxing it was at home.

Excellent advice. We recently moved, and one of the biggest commitments I made to myself was no more seasonal clutter. I purged what I had, and if I replace anything, it will be purposeful and thoughtful- not impulse, on the fly in Homegoods 😂 It feels freeing to not have so much clutter to store away for most of the year.

You know, Robin the temptation window shopping thing, I stopped having catalogs sent to my house years ago to keep me from buying things. I always love to ACTUALLY window shop,😄 but not nearly as much. What you did cause me to think about is my "online window shopping" that can turn into me impulse buying things. I never would've considered that. I'm glad you said what your integrity impressed on you to say instead of not saying things because you might hurt some feelings. I'm going to be looking at how I've been doing this and change some things. Thanks.

A simple and unexpensive way of introducing a little home decor is by sewing your own pillow covers! I love linen in rich solid colors. Curtains are also easy to make. If you can not invest in home remodeling, just getting new oven mits, and kitchen towels can freshen up your kitchen. You can find real treasures in yard sales. I like to have fresh flowers in my house . When they are starting to look old I cut them shorter and move them to a smaller flower vase

Great tips, Thank You. I've also reduced my "impulse shopping" by Not going into the store. Its amazing how much was previouslyspent out of boredom. The problem I have now is finding new past times and not buy something. I treat myself to the movies when the urge to shop is strong. We have a cheap theater close buy it works great.

This is an excellent video, Robin! You do have to get your priorities straight for sure. I believe in simple living as well. It is a better feeling to not have a lot of stuff as it can clutter your mind as well as your home. BTW, I have a 1999 4 Runner Toyota and it is running well and holding up partly due to my taking good care of it. Two years ago I had it in the shop a lot, but now it drives very well and plus I have not had those dreadful car payments. The new cars of today are just not built as well as they were back in the 90s or even in the early 2000s. You are a lady with a good head on her shoulders no doubt. Patrick is fortunate to have you as his wife and mother of his grown Sons. Have a good rest of the week!

We drive a 2007 Highlander, now with 150k on it. Our other car is 2005 Avalon with 170k. Both cars are super reliable and still running smooth. We can upgrade them, but don’t have the urge. I thank God for what He blesses us. Our working adult children are still living with us, they can save and invest more. We eat at home most of the time, we get prepackaged food from ethnic grocery stores for a change. Other times we eat out or order to go. We buy quality items that last. Take good care of my stuff and they will serve me longer.

Their prosperity and financial wellness is a TOP priority for us as parents. One child is a Nurse Manager and the other is an Historian..... this is well worth it.... Thanks for the video Robin!!
