I bought an LG cinema 3d TV for $50 at a thrift store. It was made in 2013. It was brought in because, although it worked OK, it had some fine horizontal lines on the left of the screen. Before purchasing it, I remembered something about the problem from a You Tube video I saw a while back (Your one!). I took a chance, brought it home, reviewed your video again, used the trial and error technique to identify the problem lines, taped 'em up and BAM, the lines are now gone! The picture is now perfect. I can enjoy my 3d movies again. Thank you so much!

I just fixed a three-year-old Vizio M558-G1 by applying the opposite logic on the image vs control lines. Vertical lines dominated the picture, and removing the TCON cables revealed the problem to be on the left-hand side. From your video, wherein you pointed out image data is vertical and control/timing data is horizontal, that told me I had an image information issue. Before then, I had no idea which pins to cover. That data limited the shorted vertical image processor to one of six on the right and I inferred that meant six control lines. Covered them all, and the picture came back immediately with a shadow in the lower left corner. I then started working one at a time, starting with line 6, then 5, and *bingo*, the picture was back with no flutter. I put it back together and it has been running perfectly for about four hours now. You just saved me $1,600 I was getting ready to plunk down on an LG G2!! ❤️

Not worth fixing the JVC but I used the Tcon out of the JVC as it was the same part number and make but version 4 rather than version 1 that was already in the Hitachi. Then it all loaded up (it had been dead in the garage for two years!) but it had the horizontal lines. Took off each cable and figured it was the right side. First attempt of tape in the middle didn’t work but moved it right a bit and second try worked! It’s not 100% but it’s 99.99%! Now I have a very happy wife as she can watch Strictly in the kitchen. Bro, this basically fixed our TV. We taped over the left-most 4 pins on the left side ribbon (looking at the back of the TV, oriented right side up). The only down side is that it seems the red LEDs are affected by this. There are horizontal wavy patterns every time a lot of red is shown on the screen (like in Netflix, for example). Either way, our TV literally randomly started showing lines and color stains, and this helped us completely get rid of those, so our TV is watchable once again. Thank you so much, dude!!!

Any suggestions would be awesome, thank you.
@FrugalRepair4 жыл бұрын
Good to hear you got the link. What you are describing sounds like there is at least one shorted LED module on the darker side. The reason you get full brightness at boot up is that the power supply ramps up the voltage all the way and then the short circuit happens to take it out some others LEDs (maybe it's localized to one of the LED strips).

For my model it seems the most likely cause is a bad capacitor but I first need to figure out how the reader works and how to use it to pin point the problematic part.

If you use trial and error again, like you did in another of your videos, could you find which exact line or lines were causing the malfunction? Therefore, wouldn't less tape blockage boost the signal by chance? Thanks again for your content! I'm trying to fix horizontal lines on a TV given to me.
@FrugalRepair2 жыл бұрын
Finding the exact cause can be tricky because it is likely something not visible (or accessible) inside the lcd assembly. So you need to do trial and error diagnostics from the outside (ie mess with the row signals) to try to narrow it down. The row signals are individual so there isn't a boost, per se. It's a bit complicated to explain but that's what I was hoping to do in this video, lol.

Thanks for the explanation. I “fixed” mine a number of years ago and couldn’t understand why it worked.

Thank You. This actually works l picked up a free 75" LG had horizontal lines across the entire screen, it was the right ribbon at fault,l didn't want to waste time so decided to just cover the first 12 gold lines, from the left side of ribbon towards the right (didn't remove the entire ribbon so from the left side of the ribbon when looking at it still in place basically) ...l covered exactly 12...and Bang it was fixed😀...couldnt believe it. Try blocking first 12 lines on bad ribbon (from the left side) and see if that works first like it did for me😁!! Cheers

@@FrugalRepair My Vizio SmartTV has horizontal, fuzzy lines but it has a vertical roll as well. So this may not do the trick but I thought I'd try your trick with the tape (maybe need to block some of the Vertical connections as well?)..... I would take apart Halloween and Christmas decorations as a kid to get the motion sensor or lights to work again. Most of the time just taking connections apart and putting back together did the trick. And I fix cell phones here and there. But I love taking apart electronics to diagnose and fix them. I never knew how the pixels in an LCD worked, so cool to have someone explain it other than, "It's magic" (What my electronics engineering teacher told me about how radio signals work). Needless to say, I did not care for that teacher. Thanks again

Thanks for the hack! This did fix an horizontal line I had on my 4k TV. Only issue is afterwards I get some faint horizontal lines across but not very noticeable. For the tape I winged it and guessed right by trial and error and it seemed to do the trick!

Thank you @FrugalRepair! Very informative video and well explained. Now I have Philips TV (58PUS7855/12), and after taking a hit from the tennis ball by our youngest the horizontal lines appeard plus on the right side of the display around 8 inches from the bottom the screen is getting really hot so it started to melt the display and the plastic casing. Now I unplugged the ribbons from T-CON from both sides and indeed with ribbon for right side unplugged (S-L, left from the rear of the screen) the right side of the display is white and right side displays image with plethora of horizontal white lines. When I unplug ribbon for left side of the display the left side is white and right side displays better picture(still horizontal lines) and no image displayed from the bottom up to around 8 inches. This is where the ball hit the screen (I believe) and now very hot place (short) can be found on the edge of the display. Not sure how to proceed further. Much appreciated for any suggestions. Thanks!
@FrugalRepair11 ай бұрын
Sounds like the lcd cracked when the ball hit it. If so, you unfortunately, aren't able to repair the cracked screen.

@@FrugalRepair Thanks. What a bummer:). I was trying some more info. Stumbled upon info that using jest gun can help to return crystal to its compartments, but this probably pure luck:). It seems like liquid crystal spilled over the area and/or paths damaged causing short. Would send a photo here but it doesn’t let me. Wanted to give it a go before I let it go:). Cheers

Can still watch the TV and funnily it would be okish after a while but then can freeze and getting darker like image is stopped being fed to display at all. Trying to find some patents and not there yet, found Ambilight though:). The manufacturer is TPV who supposedly can use brand name Philips.

You're a legend! thanks for sharing your knowledge. Question: can you change a broken LCD panel from a different brand or model? Is that possible?
@FrugalRepair4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes you can replace an LCD on the TV, but the issue is that it has to match what the timing control board is outputting. That is, all of the signals must match on both sides.
@VALIANT_Electronics3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, you need to check that vcc is the same, also, if the screen has an lvds cable or ribbon cable you need to check if they are the same kind, for example there are screens that are milimetrical so they have only one ribbon cable to the tcon this cable had like 50 lvds line or more, also you need to check if the screen had the same ratio, you cant replace a 60hz screen with a 120hz screen unless you have a converter, also they need to be same size, inches are not standar for every screen, you can have two 42" screens but one can be 2 or 3 milimiter bigger. Sony is compatible with samsung and lg is with any chinese screen

Thanks! I do have a TV that has vertical lines so maybe I will make a video sometime. Great suggestion. The jerry rig solution many times for that is to put non-conductive material on top of one of the electrical connections and force it down by screwing the frame down on it to create pressure on it.

Hi, I have been checking out your videos and thanks for sharing the quick diagnostic tips. I have an issue and still cannot locate the problem. My issue is the screen goes dark between 6-12 minutes with no noticeable lines on the screen and I have already tried swapping the t-con board. I went as far as outline the front screen off to check the LEDs and they function so I am starting to hit a wall and if you have any other suggestions I would love to hear them!

Hey Rhys.. I have a question.. When you do a continuity test on the signal lines, cant that damage the sub pixels ? I am not sure what the average multimeter puts out for a continuity test or what voltage the sub pixels are running at so could the meter output cause secondary damage ?.

Is there a certain page or specific language to use to find which pins on the board are the clk’s. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

You can use a multimeter in continuity setting to find pins that are electrically connected on both sides. Look for a group of them in a row and that’s probably them

First I would like to thank you for the simple and excellent explanation.I have a Panasonic Fhd tv which started showing the horizontal lines. I opened it and found the t con board which was surprisingly an lg board ,identified that the left half was the reason for the horizontal lines and the tape actually fixed it. I have a question though where actually is the problem,is it the led panel or the t con board ?
