I occasionally not only find better prices with trains, but the scheduling options can sometimes be better than a bus. We still take the bus more than train due to it generally being less expensive, but both my wife and I enjoy the train over the bus. The train can be much cheaper when looking at shorter trips. To go from Figueira da Foz to Coimbra on a train is €2,80 one way while a bus is €7,50 with Rede Expressos. The train has seventeen schedules at this price while the bus has two. There may be other options for this particular trip, but your advice to shop around is spot on!

Hello Todd, and thank you for the great information re: the train from Figueira da Foz to Coimbra! That's way better value than the bus, and it's great there are so many more scheduling options! It was similar in the Algarve, when we did a day trip from Portimão to Lagos. The train ticket was less than half the price of the local bus, and was a far more pleasant experience. We love train travel, and were talking to a friend today about the brilliant train trips we went on through Russia and the 'stans in platskartny, third class. I would love to travel on overnight trains in Europe, as know they're bringing back many of the old routes, but they'll definitely be way more pricey than those in the former USSR or if travelling by bus! ~ Mandy 😀😁

Next week, I'm going from Caldas da Rainha to Nazaré. A bus is truly the best option as the train schedule is sporadic on the oeste line and it leaves the passenger a couple miles to the east of town. I checked with Rede Expressos and the ticet was €6,00 one way while Rodoviário do Oeste was only €3,80. The travel time was about the same at 40 vs 44 minutes. Spending a few minutes extra doing a comparison can result in some significant savings.
@FrugalTravellers2 жыл бұрын
You are so right, Todd. A little time spent doing some research really does make a considerable difference. That trip for example is so much cheaper on Rodoviário do Oeste. Are you aware you can buy a day return ticket on that route for €6.50 on R do Oeste for a further saving. You must specify which time return bus you want when you buy your ticket. A friend came over from Nazaré today and had to travel with Rede Expressos. The R do Oeste buses only run 2 each way on the weekends. You have many more options on weekdays. 👍

I completely agree with giving a bit of time to do transfers. I think we are our own worst enemy sometimes with the stress caused by cutting transfers too close. Things can and do go wrong. We had a tire blow out on a Flixbus causing about a 2.5 hour delay a couple months ago.

Thanks, Todd. It is so much more pleasant to travel without stress and to be able to relax and enjoy the journey knowing you have plenty of time to transfer. That unfortunate delay for you would have been rather inconvenient but these things do happen. Oh no, I'm sorry to hear about your mum's mobility issues. That certainly requires a bit of research in advance, but I am sure there will be great online resources advising if a town, city, country etc is walking stick/wheelchair friendly. I'm actually from NZ and Lee is the one from the UK 😀😁 ~ Mandy

I could not do a hostel. They were cool when I was 20; a 40 something not so much.

I'm not sure, Badger. I'm over dorms... the last time we stayed in one was in Warsaw, March 2020, and I swore then, never again! I do like staying in double rooms though in hostels, as we've met some wonderful people that way. Each to their own, of course 😀😁 ~ Mandy

Understandable they are not for everyone. We tend to book our own room so we have the privacy of our own space but the social benefits of the community spaces also. A great opportunity to meet other like minded travellers. 😊

@@FrugalTravellers Yes, I am forever done with youth hostels. Also when I backpacked Europe in 2000....well i am American and in a hostel everyone always had to get their demeaning little comment in (followed by self-satisfied little smirk), and everyone thought they knew me and i was just like TV. in my 40s now and i try to go to Europe every year. pensions are now my thing.
