Hi! I work as a development consultant here in Sri Lanka, and one of the key projects i am engaged in is the revival of the Sri Lankan tea industry. Ceylon Tea, as it's known, is the best quality (flavour) in the world, but that quality comes at a cost! Apart from the soil and climate, what gives our tea its unique flavour is that we pluck "two leaves and a bud". Unfortunately this "selective plucking" as it's called, can only be done manually, and given the shortage of labour and its cost (even considering the ridiculously low wage rate), we find ourselves being out-priced in the global market compared to countries which have mechanized the plucking process. Of course, we could resort to machine plucking too but that would mean losing out on the quality, which is our USP. We would no longer have a competitive advantage in a niche market and at the same time cannot match the sheer volumes being produced by countries like India, China and Kenya. Sorry for the long rant 😂 but this is one of those topics that's very close to my heart ❤
@FrugalTravellers8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for taking the time to provide all this information. 🙏. I find it really fascinating and I am very intrigued into how the industry is heading in the future. I've seen some of these mechanised plucking machines on other videos. It is a concern that the focus is now on quantity not quality. It's hard to compete with such innovations. I wonder if they have any long term effects on the bush. 🤔 It's so vigorous! I hope there remains a demand for quality hand picked tea as a niche market. The other issue seems to be the lack of workers as the next generation are reluctant to engage in such strenuous work, as is the case in hard manual work worldwide. We wish you all the best and we will continue to highlight the tea industry in our further travels. We intend to visit more estates as we travel through Bangladesh this year. 👍

Nice vlog as always! PS. Who is team coffee and who's team tea? 😅
@FrugalTravellers9 ай бұрын
Hello Pocahoetaz 👋 It's always so lovely to hear from you 😊 For us, Lee is definitely Team Tea, whilst I didn't start even liking tea until I was in my 30s, and was Team Coffee all the way 🤣 What about you... Team Coffee or Team Tea?
@pocahoetaz9 ай бұрын
@@FrugalTravellers oh wow-interesting! I think I'm "team tea" but I need to stop drinking so much because tannis in tea lower absorption of iron and it's important especially for vegetarians/vegans. I hope you two are doing good. Have a great rest of the week!
@FrugalTravellers9 ай бұрын
@@pocahoetaz Although I'm team tea I do enjoy a coffee most mornings. We'll have to visit some coffee producing places in the future too. 😁 Have a great week. 👍 Lee

@@pocahoetazOhhh... that's so interesting re: the tannins and iron. I've read that I should be drinking 3 cups of green tea per day to reduce the recurrence of breast cancer... I hadn't realised it could have an issue with my iron level on my whole food plant-based diet! ~ Mandy
@pocahoetaz9 ай бұрын
@@FrugalTravellers well we should remember not to drink it while eating or short before/after eating. Green tea is healthy and also tasty when properly brew (I'm not expert myself😅) or with some extras like mango. Looking forward to see new videos! :)
