Sri Lanka was one of the most beautiful countries we have visited. We were there 9 years ago and it looks like it's become a lot more touristy in that time.
@FrugalTravellers9 ай бұрын
Wow, I can imagine it being so much less touristy 9 years ago. It was still so easy to get off the tourist trail as you'll see in upcoming videos 🤗😁

I had to laugh with the 'David Attenborough' commentary. at the end of the instagrammers in their 'natural habitat' on the swing! That posse of dancers on the bridge was pretty cool too! Ella looks magical and hiking around herer would be right up our alley too. I'm not one for the instagram shots, but Jay is. I get so stressed out when trying to get the right shot when there are heaps of people around. Great video Lee and Mandy! We've also been very impressed with how much content you've been putting out lately, well done! - Jon
@FrugalTravellers9 ай бұрын
Hi Jon. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm sure you both would love it there. It's so fascinating watching the instagrammers in action. In fact when we visit popular tourist destinations we often spend more time watching the intriguing human behaviour than we do looking at the sights. 😂😂. We don't really have the knack of striking the pose either. 😂 We've been really smashing the videos out lately, trying to catch up on a lot of lost time lately which is understandable. We're getting there and hopefully eventually will be back up to date. 🙏😊

Oh, I also had to give kudos to Lee's posing on the railway, very impressive! Jay tells me all the time that I need to practice my expressions in the mirror because I am so bad at my thumbnail expressions! Keep up the great work, it is clearly paying off!!

a famous sri lankan movie named Demodara Palama had its ending scenes on that bridge where they choreographed fight scenes ON the train and they were running against the clock to a bomb on the train that blew up over that bridge

Hi Lee and Mandy . Ella was a sleepy village just tea plantations after the advent of social media the town took of. We lived in Bandarawella the next big town about 10 Km towards Baddulla. My late Dad would go to the tea estates and set up milk collection from small holdings with one ore two cows, hence the training in NZ through the government and Commonwealth this was in the 60's 70's The tea Pluckers were brought from South India during the time of the British rule. It is sad that to this day they do no have citizenship only by registration . They speak Tamil . My great grand mother ( Miss Orr) was a midwife would go around the tea estates delivering babies Mandy I hope you are doing well God Bless Marlon

Hello Marlon. How lovely to hear your story of how it used to be when you lived in the region. I bet it seems to have changed a lot since then. It is still lovely and peaceful outside of Ella and we really enjoyed it there. We passed through Bandarawella on our way to the Uva Halpewatte tea estate where we did a factory tour. We'll show that on an upcoming video if you'd like to see. ❤️ Thank you for your kind comments. We really appreciate it. 🙏

5:18 when you're eating ripened jackfruit, dip a jackfruit bulb in salt water and sprinkle or dip some coarse pepper on it. It is really yummy then. That is how most of us eat it in SL. Also, when you eat pineapple, sprinkle ground salt and chilli powder on it.

Hi Judith. Isn't it all so beautiful? 😍 I love how fertile and verdant Sri Lanka is. Everything grows so well. I can imagine it would be impossible to starve here because fruit and vegetables grow absolutely everywhere. 😊😋 It truly is a budget backpackers paradise. One of the few countries left in the world where you can still get by on $10 a day. 😁 It's amazing how many folk will risk life and limb for that one amazing photo! 😳🤳 Have a fantastic week. Lee 😁

Hi there. Thank you so much 🙏 We mentioned the best options for phones in our very first video, first 24 hours in Sri Lanka: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYKUnHyircqMrqs We bought a globe SIM card and a very cheap data package. Great video-as always. 👍🏻 Of course we saw the railway bridge from a nearby cafe and enjoyed the views. We didn’t realize we could walk on the bridge until we saw folks there-even if not legal-😮 so thanks for bringing us along. That second train looked pretty new. I guess SL is getting some new rolling stock! 🚇 Lee is just a natural! I recommend his next trip should be to Paris or Milan so he can walk down that runway and show all of us some new gear for next years’ fashion. 😂😂
@FrugalTravellers9 ай бұрын
It certainly is an impressive spot. Nice idea to just sit and enjoy it from a viewpoint cafe. 👍. It can become a bit of a circus down there. 😂 Yes the trains are getting slowly upgraded I believe. Those ones in that region must be over 50% tourists in them now. You can see why they are all so popular! I think I'll leave the catwalks to the fashionistas and stick to bumming around the world with a GoPro. 😂😂. Sri Lanka is so lovely. Which was your favourite place of all?

Why oh why did you not just walk along the railway line to the bridge, Its a 30 min stroll, and its flat, no hills. Ps the old trains are better for photos.Ps It is dangerous to fly Drones near the Bridge, as there are many Bees living in the bridge structure, and it has been known for swarms of Bees to attack people!

@@FrugalTravellers I'm loving your travels around Sri Lanka. Two years ago I walked the last 40 miles along the track to Ella. An easy stroll, as I said no hills, just gradients. I'm 75 with a heart condition and plan to do similar in Feb 2025. Travel now is so easy with the internet and mobile phones. Never underestimate the stupidity and dumbness of the Instagram generation 😀. Trying to walk on the wall just for a photo and shits and giggles. You keep reading Instagrammers falling to their death in waterfalls and other precarious places trying to take a photo and yet, there doesn’t seem to be a learning curve 😀
