Weird innit? There's never a shortage of Mars Bars, Coco Pops, Rice Crispies, Cocaine, Heroin, those little plastic toys stuck on the front of kids' magazines, Rolos, empty Laughing Gas canisters in the street, Creme Eggs (all in the shops by Feburary), tins of cheap lager/cider which are always somehow stronger than more expensive brands - and Ferrero Rocher. ffs

They`re more expensive here in Spain too, where many fruits and vegetables for the EU are produced so I'm affraid that's the current situation. The British government are blaming Spain when it is clearly BREXIT as fruit and veg export companies have chosen other markets over Britain to sell to as they have a choice of 26 other countries within the EU trade free as well as new markets such as USA and Canada. So based on the people interviewed in this video, the whole lack of tomatoes and cucumbers is to be blamed on bad weather in Spain, Portugal and Morocco? Where I'm living, Continental Europe, there is no shortage of either of these vegetables. Nobody finds it strange that this has never happened before at a scale where there is a news report about it, except maybe in the 70s? or 60s? Without Brexit, this problem would not be happening because the UK would have planted their normal crops of greenhouse veg (no problem finding seasonal people for harvest time) and the EU would have had the UK on its delivery route (no red tape and possible congestion (causing veg to perish before arrival) to make things unduly complicated). The UK would have been in the same boat as the rest of Europe - perhaps tomatoes and cucumbers being more expensive than normally at this time of year, for example. It will never cease to amaze me to hear people scooting around the elephant trying to pretend it's a mouse.
@Whoami691
@Whoami691 Жыл бұрын
Except all of those things are fully available from every farmers market here. See the problem you - and every European - is making is you confuse a domestic issue with a trade one. We have all these products, they are just not for sale in supermarkets because our greedy supermarkets want to force prices down by relying on imports rather than pay our farmers a decent wage Except this time the farmers told them to shove it. As a result the supermarkets are low but local shops are full to the brim. Farmers are actually getting paid this time. But please, blame Brexit a bit more, I know you like to blame all the UK's problems on Brexit, not like Spain's agriculture minister already dismissed that notion is it? Remind me, who were the first to help Ukraine and who got the vaccine first? Wasn't the EU.
@annerigby4400
@annerigby4400 Жыл бұрын
@@Whoami691 Just one point here, about the vaccine... the EU had nothing to do with the UK getting the vaccine first. That was up to the UK to use its citizens as guinea pigs for the world. The UK could have been the first when it was in the EU. The two are totally unrelated. Also, what does the UK helping Ukraine have to do with Brexit or the EU? you seem to be making a big mix of everything in a weak attempt to make brexit look like something good. It isn't. No matter how hard you try, the UK has lost a lot by leaving the EU. The number one loss is a seat at the table and having a say in rules and laws and standards. The UK wants to rid itself of restrictions (standards) and so will make itself unable to do commerce with the EU or any other country that has the same standards. You better hope that the US market is generous and that the price of transport/shipping drops tremendously because the EU is soooo much closer.

I partially agree. Veggies and fruits that are not in Europe are not needed for consumption. We have survived without them for hundreds of years, we can do without them now as well. That being said, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers are really not "seasonal", they can be grown not far away from where we live. We just have to cooperate with the country, that is all. Britain wasn't even self-sufficient for food in WWII, when the population was less than half what it is now and the country was under strict rationing. Atlantic convoys cost thousands of lives but were essential in order to sustain the nation. We have been absolutely reliant on food imports for at least a hundred years, which makes self-imposed trade sactions seem especially silly. We've isolated ourselves from essential suppliers. Also in food media in the Netherlands they have mentioned that with the cost of living rising to start thinking about shopping smarter. To stop buying vegetables and fruit which are out of season as they will be much more expensive. Since moving to Luxembourg six years ago I kept track on my shopping/groceries expenses. I have noticed that the monthly cost has risen though in the last two years.

"Due to energy prices" - no-one is hearing this (although I also blame Brexit). In other words, it's related to Nordstream, the war in Ukraine, sanctions on Russia, etc. The sooner the UK can produce some cheap renewable power the better, so it can grow its own tomatoes year-round! Or sell some cheap power to Holland. Energy - and tomato - independence is a great thing.

Absolute tosh! No bad weather here in Almería in Southern Spain, the capital of where your fruit & veg are grown. Slob Minister Thérèse Coffey today openly blames bad weather in Southern Spain for the fruit and veg shortage in the U.K. No, no and no!! 🤬 I’ve lived in Almería in southern Spain for 32 years which is where much of your fresh produce is grown and this winter is a regular seasonal winter with NO particularly cold weather with temps between 16-22 degrees in the daytime and 11-16 degrees at night. The British government are blaming Spain when it is clearly BREXIT as fruit and veg export companies have chosen other markets over Britain to sell to as they have a choice of 26 other countries within the EU trade free as well as new markets such as USA and Canada. Admin and tonnes of Brexit paperwork is to blame for the shortage!!! U.K. supermarkets are limiting customers to purchase only 3 tomatoes and other items 😳😱 I get given a huge bag of GORGEOUS/TASTY/FRESHLY PICKED DEEP RED tomatoes and other stuff for FREE!
