The price of some basic foods has doubled in a year.
Others - from eggs to tomatoes - have been in such short supply, they've been rationed.
Rishi Sunak invited farmers, supermarket bosses and food producers to Downing Street today for a special summit, designed to help keep supply chains running and tackle soaring prices.
But many food businesses say they're struggling to stay afloat - and far more fundamental changes are needed, starting with sustainability.

As a Canadian, I’m so sick of the UK not telling the whole story to people. Inflation is bad in all developed countries… but the UK is substantially worse than all other G7 economies. They broke down the input costs of that loaf of bread in this video… what they didn’t say is each input is higher because of Brexit. People tiptoe around that reality b/c everyone knows the UK isn’t going back so why acknowledge the something that isn’t changing (honestly, why would the EU ever trust the UK enough to let them back in). The reason to actually be honest is because you need to find mechanisms to make up for all you have lost through Brexit (solutions to labour mobility, market access, addressing the reputational harm Brexit has done to the UKs ability to make international agreements) to fix theses issues. Honestly, ironically brexitters argued leaving Europe would allow them to easily make international agreements with countries outside the EU… but after watching the UK show utter distain for international obligations and argue sovereignty should trump all other priorities, countries outside Europe won’t negotiate with the UK as they don’t trust the UK government will stand by international law obligations.

I am currently in Spain and have my daughters in the UK we often compare prices and quality from food clothing footwear cars you name it generally Spain is 20% cheaper and I have not seen any shortages here. Fresh fruit and veg will keep for 8 to ten days I cant help feeling the Uk is being mislead but then it is the con merchants in charge

Good for you! Glad to see someone who is not going to sit in the corner and whimper like a loser. Use what is still cheap and plentiful for bread-making. Be inventive where necessary. I've done the same in the past, for the sake of quality. I let it drop for a while since I was busy in the garden all winter. But now I'm fed up of 'convenient' supermarket bread getting lighter, fluffier, and falling apart whenever I put anything in it for my boy's sandwiches. Furthermore, I'm getting more worried about the amount of glyphosate being sprayed on what seems to be 'more' types of food. It just isn't right. Now that my new garden is producing a little more fruit this year, helping with the grocery bills, I can upgrade some of my supermarket ingredients to 'organic' (and just have to hope they are!)

I think the point here is not about why the cost of energy is so high that drives all the cost up, it is about why the energy suppliers keep making a massive profit while people is struggling to pay their bills!! In term of tackling of inflation, the UK is the worst in Europe, and the Tories keep saying the two main issue (energy cost and shortage of labor) are a global issue, they are not just in the UK and it is not because of Brexit. Very easy answer - Brexit. We are outside the EU single market meaning we are a third party, so we come last after the EU (our largest trading partner) has sorted itself out. The UK now pays higher costs for goods, Transportation, Tariffs & Taxes, inflation is being imported; this ongoing reduction in exports and overall Trade is only the start the effects of the Hard Brexit have years to run.

This is hitting those with food intolerance or allergies the hardest , I have Celiac disease so cant have gluten or lactose . A loaf of gluten free bread is double the cost and half the size of a normal loaf , same is true for lactose free milk , I mean come one £2.95 for 2 litres of milk is more then extortionate! We realise it costs more but this is ridiculous, especially as many off us have other underlying health problems that have caused these problems .

Have you considered a bread making machine? will pay for itself in a short space of time and much easier than using an oven. Also better for you as you know what ingredients are used. Plus you can set a timer and fresh bread when you wake up. We got one reasonably priced and its excellent at making cakes etc too.

Now, the people with allergies are those who I do pity most of all at this time. Unlike the rest of us, who 'can' tweak our shopping lists and turn to something cheaper, you and everyone like you have no choice at all. When I had digestive issues some years ago, I had to go on a gluten free diet (advised by hospital dietician) as one step in my elimination diet. Wow! Shocking prices for gluten free bread. It's no wonder they sell it in half-loaves. Rip off. Fortunately, after a rest, my system rebooted and I was okay so long as I keep gluten to a minimum. Not so good for my poor cousin, who is so bad with her allergy she's straight into hospital if she has a crumb of gluten. She's shelling out a fortune for her food. My husband is allergic to cow's milk, so no dairy for him (except eggs). So I go for coconut/almond/soya milk (soya milk - I think - is cheaper than cow's generally), coconut/soya based yoghurt, and coconut based cheese. The milk and yoghurt alternatives, I can suffer the price differences. But the price of vegan cheese! Honestly, someone needs to come up with oatmilk cheese, or maybe hazelnut (since we can grow those here. I dread to think of the carbon footprint of shipping coconuts).

The majority of people striking are public sector workers. Public sector industries generally DON'T make things that are sold for profit. A nurse, doctor, Teacher doesn't produce a product that is sold or even exported/imported for profit. That is predominantly what happens in the private sector. Products are sold generating profits for a private business & its share holders. The combined result is a countries GDP. Gross domestic PRODUCT.. People striking in the public sector has very little to do with a population not spending money when public sector workers are a low percentage of the workforce and are having a tiny effect on production of PRODUCTS. Supermarkets have been lying about costs. As an example, Sainsburys have put up bananas from 45p per kilo to £1 thats price gauging and under the circumstances that we find ourselves in, it should be a crime to take advantage of people. @@pierreweinzweig8591 Funny thing, that. My highest electricity price this year has been about €0,26 per kWh (which equates to 22p), and I often pay €0,03 per kWh (2,6p) at the w/e.. My mother-in-law is a pensioner and pays less (she lives in the flat above us) In France there is a flat rate of €0,02 per kWh. So how is it that my mother(94), in the UK was paying 32p until recently, and is still paying nearly 17p? Also funny how inflation in the rest of Western Europe is significantly lower than the UK's. And we have absolutely no problem getting fish fruit and veg. Last time I was in the UK the fruit and veg rarely had more than 2 days of shelf life when it went on display.

@@davidcolin6519 For me - I can see that all of the UK's help has been to buffer our bills, paying out a tiny amount. The Government won't tax or implement a tax against the suppliers. For me it's clear. The people making the decisions get shareholder benefits. If they reduce the supplier's profits = lowering shareholder dividends. Allowing the suppliers to make massive profits = higher shareholder dividends. That for me is why the UK government has chosen to do what they do. It's personal wealth improvement rather than helping the poor or needy. I may be wrong, but to me, it gives me understanding.

Nothing to do with the EU. Gready supermarkets , farmers get little return on investment so no incentive to grow or produce. Whole country taxed to infinity, over inflated production costs . Actually isn't very appealing to foreign investment or the natives although it does appeal to the 1% with plans for new swimming pool in garden chartering private jets to get around .maybe we should look at the heart of the problem and restructure it as broken . It costs a single person the same amount to run a house as it does 2 people in a house yet they pay the same tax and over inflated energy, water rates council tax minus a measily discount on single occupants problem being the bill is 25% higher than what it was 5 years ago so the 25% discount becomes a 0% discount wages at same level companies can't really afford to pay so get 1 worker in pay him a quid more and work them to the bone while cutting the hours to save on the rise they give leaving the poor soul worse off. But yet we can send arms to a country to kill people along with billions when it's none of our business in the first place. Yet people except this and carry on regardless 😂. Its modern day slavery, run it off a cliff, take it, privatise it and then charge the earth for it !! Dept based 💩 system . Can someone tell me where goods are being rationed exactly? Because it definitely isn't affecting every region of the UK. It was less rationing and more about blackfriday styled hoarding during the pandemic amongst the paranoid and fearful. The most notable change of late was higher energy costs (esp for homes using gas heating) during the winter. As for soaring prices, it is obvious that some supermarkets have been trying their luck in taking advantage of the media headlines and pushing up pricing only because they can and not because they must, and select goods have gone up and then down after they realise customers aren't buying

Whatever deluded people on here saying it's the same in US as GB economically very mistaken. MK? We do have amazing social services here. We have so many jobs that the mayor of NYC is trying to rush work permits for recently arrived migrants. Tons of them are already working illegally and city govt admits that but won't be prosecuting anyone for it. Nobody here starves to death. You can be as poor as a church mouse and there are decent benefits, food pantries, and soup kitchens that get food donated from places gourmet shops, bakeries and expensive salad and sandwich restaurants. I have a stalker & they have complicated my life. I went to a hotel/shelter a few years ago & my stalker paid staffers to berate me. When the pandemic came they sent me elsewhere illegally. The hotel/shelter I wound up in later was very nice, not the staff so much but they did wind up finding me a luxury, rent stabilized apartment. It's near Central Park in NYC, near where Prince William says he took his jog & nobody noticed him.😂. The rent is very low for my apartment. We have a gym, lounge and outdoor garden and deck. I have to have benefits for now but hopefully I can get the losers arrested for stalking & defaming me. The city gives you food and cash benefits. My stalkers kept interfering in my past jobs telling ppl I'm a criminal & other lies. It's too long of a story but in England, I would not have been able to move anywhere while in this situation. I have medical insurance that the city provides and our medical professionals make great $ and don't have dumb rules like in the UK that you can only spend 10 minutes with each patient! #Insanity! There is a former well to do couple in Georgia, Kim & Kroy Biermann. Look them up. Kroy was an NFL player & Kim a star. She has a gambling addiction & spent all their millions of $. Kroy has a pension of 4500$ monthly. Kim refuses to pay any bills. They have 4 small children. Kim & Kroy owes the IRS over 1 million dollars. They owe everybody including the utilities company. They owed a 2,000$ light bill. The utility company had to turn the lights back on because of "Hardship". Were not a perfect country but our Government officials try to plan safety nets for everyone. Don't compare GB to the US because they are Not looking out for their people. GB should seek advice from other nations and ponder rejoining the EU. I feel so bad for the people in GB working hard but not being able to eat well or buy toiletries or pay their heating bills because of financial mismanagement in GB. 30 years before the Ukraine War started, the first COP Conference, like every conference after it, said the world would move away from fossil fuels. We are seeing food inflation because we import 60% of our food from countries whose food production is being hugely effected by the climate, due to 30 years of CO2 being released by those fossil fuels! China, for the first time ever, has had to import food, India has stopped exporting rice. The EU saw food production fall by 23% in 2022! This is why we have major food inflation, and probably WWII style rationing within 5 years - fossil fuels!
