Robert taught us a good trick to know when perfectly ripe to eat. Put them upside down and when it starts leaking a tiny bit of juice, it's ready.
@FruitfulTrees11 күн бұрын
from my experience once juice comes out of it, it's usually over ripe

Yes the black sapote fruit in General is not the best but considering not much is available in the winter it's good. However this Rianeke variety was up there with the best of even the summer fruits in my opinion

Reineke is also called Merida sometimes. I believe it was collected from the Yucatan.

I’m doing a black Sapote Freeform espalier against my fence… should get first fruits this year. I’m thinking I should have done the same thing with my white Sapote because of its wonky growth habit. Can’t wait to taste both!

Those are huge fruits Paul!! Damn I love red sapote / mamey fruits. I mix with raw milk 60% blended ripe fruit and 40 % raw milk & raw organic cow milk cream. Red sapote ice cream. You ship them out to Connecticut? I can make any kind of raw fruit jam, syrup and they have raw enzymes in them. The soft jelly fruit leathers weigh almost 12 lbs a gallon. It’s a trade secret . I didn’t realize there are 4 different black sapote varieties. I want to move to either Florida or down to Costa Rica and have my own tropical fruit trees. Reineche Black Sapote. I’ve made 14 different fruit jams and syrups already. I made organic banana .

Hey Paul, I'm the guy that you met at the Aldi's that day. You might not remember me. I was just wondering can you one day get one of these professional growers to give us a good soil recipe for our trees? It's really Sandy and most mixes I used are for Northern regions. I wanted to see if they could provide a recipe that works for South Floridians in hardiness zone 10b to 11.
@FruitfulTrees12 күн бұрын
sure I'll ask but my trees do great I don't add much just some mulch when I first plant them
@TacticalMayo12 күн бұрын
@FruitfulTrees what I mean is is like I got saplings but if I put them in the dirt from the floor they die because it's pure sand. I was wondering if there's any amendments I could add? Either way, thank you very much for responding. God bless you in jesus's name. Have a good day.
@mwnemo12 күн бұрын
Almost all the growers recommend not adding anything into the hole you dig. Just add compost and leaf mulch/organic matter on top of the soil as mulch.
@TacticalMayo12 күн бұрын
@mwnemo they have like something like a compost at the landfills on Haverhill and 45th. I was wondering is that an actual compost or should I get something from the store? Plus thank you very much. I really did need the advice.

It's more specific to what plant you are growing. I put my seedlings in cactus mix from lowes. I fertilize with water soluble miracle grow.

It's a big grower. I"m not sure if there are dwarf varieties of Black sapote
@jeffery892810 күн бұрын
Yes. It's possible to keep anything small (that's not a palm). Much easier to train it small than to make a big tree small after the roots are huge. I have two in the swale by the street. One is 9 ft, the other is 7.

Yes Superhass is an amazing tasting variety. My tree was loaded but sadly for me the fruit didn't ripen evenly but I may have had been picking them too soon. Anyway since that time I found even better varieties to grow that seem to do better for me.
