Delia Smith creates a pizza made from a scone dough which is firstly cooked in a frying pan and then grilled. The world is your oyster when it comes to toppings but Delia plumps for a classic topping of mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, anchoves and olives. Clip taken from her One is Fun cookery series. For all those people moaning about the oil...it's raw dough, it isn't absorbent like cooked bread, the oil is left in the pan afterwards.

Any little bits that go off the edge, you can put back on again. Thanks for that gem Delia!

Love these clips. Back when 'healthy eating' was not top priority. ;) I am sure it's possible to leave out most of the oil if you leave a slight dusting of flour on the dough and cook it in a non-stick pan. Lower heat and longer cooking time should still cook through the dough.

Reminiscent of 'Watford Services 1973' - everything was fried including the ice cream!

Best part is you can vary the toppings to suit your taste. Can’t wait to try this.

It's good! Definitely not the best pizza in the world, but much quicker to prepare than ordering a pizza takeaway. A very fast and inexpensive way to have a treat in the evening.

I think it's a cast iron pan coated in enamel. Has all the heat distribution advantages of cast iron but doesn't need as much maintenance.

I use to just cook the base bare on medium heat and then flip it over to cook the otherside..arrange all the toppings onand then bake in the oven the base was so lovely & crispy.

I get the concept of the programme though when I lived alone I mostly just made the normal 4-6 person portion, ate it two days running, and froze the rest. Certainly odd to put just raw tomatoes on a pizza, you would usually use puree, or cook them down first to get a concentrated flavour.

I know you need oil for this recipe, but that seems a bit much. Otherwise, it actually looks really good.

"One is fun"....? But the beauty of cooking for even "a family of 4" is that if you're by yourself, you'll have leftovers! :)

was our Delia thinking of pizza hut pan pizza? - this frying pan pizza and restaurant pan pizza are 2 different things

Naturally, they're different things...but I imagine most people in 1980s UK did not have restaurant-style pizza pans at home. And if they did, they weren't watching Delia shows! The recipe on which this is based came from Elizabeth David's "Italian Food" published in 1954, based on her life in Italy in the 1950s.

Just makes you wonder where all that oil went, straight into the scone dough mix i guess. Now then that's healthy she didn't even say olive oil.

1985, but the original recipe on which this is based was first published in 1954 which was the last year of food rationing in the UK.

The recipe came to Delia via Elizabeth David, who got the recipe from living in Italy in the 1950s and put it in her "Italian Food" recipe book (1954).

Why on earth would anyone want to deep fry the pizza base? Put the topping on the rolled out base and put it in the fuckin oven!! Simple!!

It's a scone dough, not a yeasted dough. If you oven bake it, it would rise and become cake like.

Welcome, today on Bland British Cooking we're going to be completely destroying one of the most simple, delicious foods on earth. Pizza, or as we've decided to call it "Pizzer" Don't forget, you can be as creative as you want, but I'll be sticking with the "traditional" style of sliced, raw, unseasoned tomatoes, whole black olives, CUBED mozzarella and of course, everyone's favorite, cat food. Pardon, anchovies. If that's not setting off enough of your body's natural biological warning systems that its just ingested some sort of poison, we're going to add a handsome dash of our favorite culinary tear gas, capers. Don't forget to season with no one's favorite, black pepper. Before we throw this this all in the oven, lets take a moment of savor what a cultural and culinary embarrassment this failure of a dish will be seen as in the future. And I think, as you've gone to the trouble to make yourself a pizza, you deserve to have a glass of something Italian with it. I prefer a diet rybeena. And thats how you make... a mistake.

"pizzer" comes from their accent. You also have to understand that different countries will have different tastes.

I reckon it would taste ok but I'm from the UK and the pizza there vs the pizza in the US (I live in Ohio now) is basically the same. Delia's recipe seems more like an overly complicated cheese on toast recipe.

What you need to bear in mind is that she's not trying to butcher the art of fine dining or destroy the cuisine of another culture- this programme was all about showing people who were singletons due to whatever circumstance how to cook a variety of things when they might otherwise be too uninspired or demoralised to even try.
