I'm watching this in 2021 getting back into flight fs2004 (FsX never really worked very low frame rates) thank you so much for this I tried painting aircraft straight onto the texture with horrible results this layer system is exactly what I needed

That's the nature of this type of blending - depending on the subtle color variations of the underlying layer, it can cause significant shifts in color. What I do is, after switching to color burn, starting playing around with the color balance of the layer until it looks like I want it to.

Excellent information and very clearly communicated. I've been wanting to repaint the Wilco E190, but I had become frustrated trying to create workable layers from their repaint kit. I'm going to use your method, which I think for my purposes will work suitably.

@rolaxert Sorry, I was painting the 185, which is one of their later models that doesn't have the mirrored texture problem. If the model is mapped so that some textures are mirrored, I'm afraid there's not much you can do about it, other than not put text where the mirroring happens. With the 172, there's a patch on the side of the fuselage that's not mirrored - the part where the registration is located in their paints - and that's the only place you can put text on that one.

Outstanding video, and techniques. I've only ever used Paint Shop Pro 9, and I'm hoping to attempt some of these techniques in that program. A lot of the terms and tools you used here, are familiar to me in PSP9.

@DemiousShy I used the vector drawing (shape) tools in Photoshop. It's pretty quick and easy to do curves once you get the hang of it.

Thanks for the info, Bill. I'll play around with that. It's funny though, Carenado's Moody blank doesn't affect the colors as much as their 182 template. So I guess it changes from template to template. Thanks again! Pete

A great tutorial. Just followed it-a few rewinds and pauses-it to paint a Carenado Bonanza A-36 in Norwegian colors. (PS Elements 13 for Mac (all functions exactly same as the video) My question: The issue is with the registration number on underside of the wing - base textures are pretty dark to begin with. I applied the tutorial methods-played with the various sliders-but didn't really get the desired effect. There just isn't enough "light" bits in the underlying texture to bring out much detail in the added layer. Thoughts?

Thanks! The easiest way to line up the panel lines is also really hard to explain in detail. Basically, in the example I used in the video, I created a master Photoshop file that was about 3x as wide and tall as the original texture and then copied the original texture sheet to it several times on different layers. Then I lined each layer up to create one unbroken aircraft profile. After that, I created a new layer on top of them all, filled it with white, set its blend mode to multiply, then painted my lines on it. To copy each section of line back to the main texture, I used ctl-click on each layer thumbnail from the original images I used to create the master file, copied the selected section of the line layer, and pasted it back into my texture. If you do this, you can get more or less perfect alignment.

Nice tutorial but for some reason it doesn't work for me. I've got a blank Carenado paint, I've got Photoshop, I've followed your directions to a T but when I change from normal to burn, my colors change from green to a teal or from red to an orange and not looking "enhanced" like yours. What am I missing? Maybe your "stripes" layer has some different kind of property?

This didnt work for me. I got the painting and all that finished, but when i put the paint in my planes texture folder, they show up completley black in fsx. I saved as 32-bit .bmp. What could i have done wrong?

David, doing a new registration is no simpler or more complex than any other sort of repaint. In fact, if you've got a current livery that you want to change the registration on, it might be easier to just do an all-new repaint for it, especially if there are stripes or markings that intersect the reg number.

After hours of trial and error and conflicting info out there, I am now about to throw my laptop out the window. So could you please explain exactly how I have to treat the files in regard to the correct image format? I have the C172N white paintkit from the Carenado website, they are given in bmp files. I use paint.net, since I cannot afford photoshop. paint.net can open the given textures in bmp format, I can edit them, I then save it, use DXTbmp to save it as DXT5 bmp. But either the textures are all black, or weirdly light blue with the "Microsoft Flight Simulator" writing on it in places. I am losing my mind here, so any help and advice would be appreciated, since I cannot find a clear explanation which format is required.

The DXT5 format should work fine, but you might have a problem with your alpha channel. The issue of seeing Microsoft Flight Simulator in places indicates you've got a missing texture somewhere. Be sure that your specular and normal maps are in the folder with your repaint too, or that you've pointed to them using a texture.cfg file.

Do you need to use the DXTBMP Texture tool? I done all of this and created my repaint and then once it was complete just put it onto my carenado aircraft and sorted the config etc. But when i opened it in flight sim it was just a black texture

I use the ImageTool program that's in the FSX Terrain SDK. You'll somehow need to convert your base textures to the FSX format. I tend to use DXT3 or DXT5, saved as DDS images.

It's part of the paint in this tutorial. If the N number is painted on, you have to start again from scratch in Photoshop.
