As a fairly new (3 months) player to the game and currently sitting 10kly beyond Colonia on the second leg of a rather ambitious attempt to circle the galaxy, I openly admit to having not realised about the pattern of the arrows. Ok yes it's a small detail in my world because I tend to FSS everything in each new system, but it certainly adds to my knowledge base. I must admit that the vastness of the galaxy still blows my mind. I'm playing a 5 year old game and ever since I was a couple of jumps beyond colonia (37ly jump range) I have had an uninterrupted chain of undiscovered systems. Pretty amazing. Highlight so far was a ringed brown dwarf, the rings of which had a 150+ls diameter. Mind blowing.

Thanks. That was more helpful than I thought it would be. Controlling your DSS targeting by entering DSS, checking your aim, exiting your DSS, realign your ship, entering your DSS and shooting the probe is a lot more effort than it needed to be. All hail to key bindings.

What I find weird about exploration is that I always hear that only like 0.3% of the galaxy has been explored yet, but when I go out, no matter how many thousands of light years I fly in some random direction, the majority of systems I come through seem to be at least partially explored.

TrangleC - yeah, I figured that’s the case myself. , initially I plan to start making short exploring runs during the week and during the weekends when I have more time do some money making grinding to eventually get a phantom and enough to kit it out. Then my avatar will post the “gone fishing” sign in my hanger and head out and stay out for as long as I’m able. I hope I can find some truly unexplored systems eventually. I wonder when one goes seriously out there did they sprinkle enough interesting sites to keep the interest up?

Toggle front/back view in surface scanner mode can be usefull too if you want to know where you need to send a probe behind, especially for big planets. As FSS, surface scanner and normal mode are independent, you can bind some input you normaly use for other things outside these modes.

The USS are allways shown on the FSS scanner by a circle (weather solid when tuned in or dashed when not). So that is helpfull if you search especially for a USS or if not what circles you can skip.

Found a bug or exploit in 3.3 regarding credit donation missions, which involves a variant of board hopping. This is extremely useful for gaining naval rank if you have the credits to spare. I am in Sol hanging out around the three stations at Earth (for Fed rank). Basically when you get a good mission board with several credit donation missions, you complete all of them and then log out. When you log back in, even to the same instance, they will all reappear and can be completed again. You can do this over and over until the board refreshes after 10 minutes. On a decent board you get maybe 5-6 donation missions which can be completed in around 90 seconds. So, you can cycle around 6-7 times before a refresh, completing 30-40 missions in 10 minutes, just sitting there. On the downside you don't always have donation missions popping up. But at Earth at least there are many Fed aligned factions at each station and the three stations can be supercruised to in a couple minutes until a good board is found. I completed Fed rank from Petty Officer all the way to Rear Admiral in about 8 hours, and spent around 60 million. I assume this works in any system. Didn't want to say anything until I completed my ranks, lol. Cheers!

If it says geological than it has a geological sight e.g Magma or brain trees ect. If it says human than it might have a crashed ship or a settlement. Thargoid signal might be thargoid barnacles.

For any people who are having issues with the button not working here's how you change it. Go to controls/ ship controls/ mode switches. It is the bottom setting that says enter fss mode. I truly felt gaslit every time I watched a tutorial on this that said hit the fss mode button which is nobodies fault here but if anyone in the future has the same issue I hope this helps. Much love commanders!

I wish I had seen this prior to completing a trip to colonia after 3.3 dropped. I had to teach myself exploration again, i like the changes but I dislike having to stop in supercruise just to use the FSS to see if the system is worth scanning. It'd be nice if I could just activate it and have a look and actually have to stop to pin those signals down.

I may have missed something, but I saw that something was reported in one place plotted the course went there and it took me to a different system where I happened to confirm the report. However the place I confirmed and the place the phenomena was reported were two different systems. I'm wondering if let's say I go into a system I honk the horn but dont scan anything individually. I then proceed to sell said data at a different station. Does that mean the report gets picked up pilots when they land on that same station and they can then go confirm it where I honked?

You’ve probably already found the answer by now, but in case anyone else is looking, that is the percentage that your scan is completed. When you get to 100% you will hear “system scan complete.”

Yeah as someone who got this game a week ago. It seems the potential to make money is seriously affected by my (your) ability to make sense of all the information the game gives you, and also figuring out how to efficiently navigate the UI and different tools and systems. Currently on Xbox, it says use Y + RB to active FSS but I haven’t been able to do it because it says I have to supercruise. But when I supercruise it says lower throttle so I have yet to open the FSS scanner

Vids like these are a lifesaver for anyone noob playing E:D. The in game tutorials are barer than barebones. Press (unbound key) so you can see x and then some squiggly lines appears then press (unbound) key to auihfuihaefuhsguiuosgjuse. When you use D-Scanner. In the log/info Windows it says that you used it and scanned is complete. It also says you can use FSS now and at the end of the sentence you can see which key is binded for that. In my case it said [']. So try ' key if it's not x for you.

Oohhh I see. So the frequency bar at the bottom allows you to search only for specific bodies, so if you set your frequency to water worlds, you can search for those spikes at that frequency and ignore all other bodies you don't care to scan.

When I see these 10-50m an hour exploration guides I get a little confused. When you are doing road to riches, do you just set min system value for 100k-300k? And if so, do you just honk, find the high value systems, then go to the next and skip identifying all the rest? I was using the FSS and identifying only high value but it took me almost 3 hours and I only made about 5m. It was taking me forever to scan everything in systems with 20-40 bodies discovered.

@ 6:30 you state "I've moved into range [for mapping]". What is the range for Discovery Scanner? FSS? Mapping? I can't find that anywhere.

Discovery scanner has two modes. 1st is that it is constantly scanning in the background trying to discover orbital bodies but this auto-mode has a limited range, while when you actually click the fire button for D-scanner and "honk", that has infinite range for at least that system. So you won't be out of range ever in a system when you press the button. Note on the limited range Auto-mode of the D-scanner: This thing is always going and so sometimes when you enter a system you instantly get a message saying something like "System discovery complete". That is because all the orbital bodies in that system happen to be quite close to the star you just jumped to and so being in range, they were discovered auto-mode for you. However if the orbital bodies are not in range of the Auto-Mode, you charge up the D-Scanner and 'Honk" and you will establish all the bodies in the system. However they are not "discovered" yet. If you open the system map and look at those bodies and click on "info" you can see a note saying "not discovered by you". So to discover them, you either throttle down to zero while in FS drive, and click on your FSS. Default keybind is the ' button. (apostrophe next to the enter key). Now use the rest of the youtube vid above to actually "discover" the orbital bodies that were out of range of the auto-discover range of your D-Scanner. Once you've discovered them you can read the info tab and decide if you want to fly over to it and surface scan using your purchased optional internal compartment module "Detailed Surface Scanner". I think I got that right. I've just started playing the game myself. What I can't tell is how much if any extra Credits I earn by taking the time to stop and 100% discovering all the orbitals in the System V's just honking to establish the number of orbital bodies and then moving on to the next system. ???

You will still be paid. You get a bonus if you are the first to map it, but that's unlikely in the bubble.

as there is no "best" surface scanner on the market, so you dont need to. there is only one type surface scanner and yes you can only engineer it for better performance
