The separation of church and state idea was originally about people having the right to practice religion without interference from the state. Many people migrated to America because their religious beliefs were persecuted elsewhere, so they could live the religious life they envisioned in America. It has nothing to do with preaching secularism and persecuting religion, because that’s the exact opposite of the principles America was founded upon.

I did do some fact checks to confirm the data, but please do your own, always. People assume that separation of church means separation of God but that is not true from the first few lines of the declaration and the constitution. God is separate from religion. I believe in God but I don't follow any religion. The term 'God' does not mean 'Christian God', it means a higher power or a creator. Christians who speak hindi or pray in Hindi do not say God they say "Bhagwan", because that is Hindi for God. Same way, Allah is not Muslim God, it's an Arabic word for God. Atheism is the absence of God and not religion, in fact one can argue that atheism is a religion of its own. The constitution assumes that there is a God because the rights in the constitution are given by God or a higher power and state cannot take them away under any circumstances. Now in ACB's case, people are questioning her religion and the beliefs she has because of that religion. In my opinion, govt or anyone else does not have the right to question my religion or the absence of it. People in the govt will follow their religions and beliefs and that is understood but they cannot question me about my theism or atheism. Furthermore, people in the govt cannot question each other religions too. In essence every one will be assessed based on the work and the contributions they have done to a particular discipline and nothing else. When you question ACB's religion or the beliefs she has because of that religion you break that rule. If she had decided a case based on her beliefs that went against the constitution then we have a problem but she has not done that.

"Separation of church & state" IS NOT IN THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!! Never has been. This idea comes from a quote by Thomas Jefferson who, in the 18th century quoted a Christian pastor who had written to Jefferson with the concern that the national government and\or state governments of the USA might impose a "state church" as was seen with King Henry VIII who imposed the "church of England" upon his kingdom forcing the people of England to conform to his religious views. The pastor expressed his concern to Jefferson stating that his (pastor) hope was that the government would adhere to the CHRISTIAN IDEAL of a "wall of separation between the chuch & the state" & not force nor hinder religious freedoms. Jefferson responded to the pastor quoting his (pastor) concern about "separation of church & state" & assured the pastor that the government had no right to impose any system of beliefs upon the people of its nation thus making the 1st Amendment rule paramount & not restricting religious freedoms. So, contrary to popular belief, the idea of "separation of church & state" is to PROTECT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM & not restrict in.
