Oh Susan ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and love of textile history and techniques. The first quilt I ever created was a Dresden Plate Appliqué quilt for my daughter over 35 years ago. A WIP in my sewing cupboard is a Hawaiian turned appliqué cushion cover and your video is inspiring me to get it out and complete it. 😊. I love the look of the Trick or Treat picnic baskets and have a quilt pattern which incorporates both the picnic baskets and double wedding ring designs, another project I have in mind to hopefully complete this year. Bless you 🤗

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Informative as usual. I’ve already looked up Harriet Powers on my phone when you mentioned her. I’m intrigued by her and her quilt. I want to learn more. I have a book about southern quilts that a friend gave me because I once said to her that “we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us.” She thought of that when she read that particular book. I believe you have mentioned that thought now a few times. It’s so true and if we don’t know about those who have gone before us when have no idea of that connection. I have so many unfinished projects that I’ve been trying to finish up (it’s going to take years) that I’ve told myself no new quilting projects but oh how you have inspired me to hand appliqué a new quilt. I’ll try to be strong and if I must I’ll try to work on my cotton pieced quilt with wool appliqué that’s waiting to be finished, but oh boy is cotton on cotton yelling at me right now. Thank you for the inspiration.

Hi Mary thank you for the lovely comment. I am so glad you were inspired!😀 that’s the best compliment I could ever receive. I completely understand having many projects in the works. I love them all and sometimes it’s difficult for me to know what to work on next!!! I hope you try applique (cotton on cotton). I find it a fun option for needlework. I am glad you feel connected to stitchers from the past..... I think about them while I stitch...often and wonder what their lives were like. Thank you again for reaching out. Wishing you joy in your stitching journey ☺️

Trick or treat. Applique is also my favorite style of quilt to make or admire. Yes it is time consuming but so worth it. I was hoping you would show your bride quilt. I so enjoy listening to you speak about quilting history! My challenge for this is also The Raven! I bought a BOM several years ago but mine is wool on cotton. I have one block left to appliqué then all the dashing and borders. The cutting of the dashing and borders intimidates me. But I am determined to learn and do it. I am a throwback to earlier times and actually enjoy using the fewest tools in the simplest ways. I’ve done some needleturn and enjoy it but need to get better at it. Thank you for all you contribute to this community!

Thank you for the informative video. I enjoy the older quilts and have been collecting some of the ‘history’ books as well. Some of my fondest memories are trips taken with a local quilt guild to see the DAR museum and University of Nebraska textiles. Love the stories behind the quilts and the women who made them. Fascinating! I’ve also been a lover of Blackbird Designs and have collected many of their books. I too, have started the trick or treat quilt. It’s a nice take and go project for a sewing group. I moved several years ago, and had to leave my sewing group of wonderful friends. We called our group The Persian Pickles (after the book by Sandra Dallas). I haven’t resumed sewing since my move. Maybe this will get me going again!

Oh I saw the “where the cold wind blows” basket quilt in the preview. I have the book and may have made a couple blocks. Definitely still on my list for when I inevitably return to quilting... Enjoying your chat on appliqué. I think the first little piece I collected was Hmong - on one of many visits to the pnw in the 90s. I enjoy learning about hill tribe handwork - lots of art forms... and while I’m randomly spinning out on world textiles, saret & sons in Santa Fe.... silk ikat and heavily embroidered jackets from the -stans... so many good things to see out there,,, Thank you, Susan! Very interesting video! Thank you for passing along your research and your enthusiastic love of quilts and all things textiles! I love that raven quilt, so cool! Using those prints for the birds is just brilliant. Have you talked about the Quilt behind you, maybe “Around the world 🌎”? It’s really beautiful! What a smart idea to make a way to roll up your large blocks. I like it! I have only made one small Quilt and it didn’t turn out great, however I have a house full of fabric so I know one day I’m going to head back into cutting them up and making quilts. At least some of them! Hard to think about quilts when it is 80° in the house! I would like a tour of your house with all those beautiful pieces of antique furniture! I would love to know what they are, what you know about them, where they came from… If you feel like letting us invade your home! Of course I loved every quilt book you showed! Eye 👁 candy 🍭 ! However I will restrain myself as I have a shelf full of quilt books already. I might even have one of those that you showed. Quilting and textile history is so fascinating! Probably food, drink, and shelter are the three main requirements for all life and civilization, and clothing falls into shelter, I would say. Right from the beginning, Textiles have been with us all.
