What people fail to understand - the Sherwood rankings are not in rank of sensitivity. They are ranked in selectivity and dynamic range. What this means is that in a crowded band, the Yaesu will be much better and less disturbed by nearby strong stations. The Icom will overload in those conditions and the RF Gain will need to be backed off some. On a quiet uncrowded band, they will hear equally as well, their sensitivity is the same. In fact, both radios sensitivity is such that they can receive way below the noise floor. Their only impediment is the level of the noise floor and not their actual sensitivity. This has been demonstrated in my shack when comparing my FTDX10 and IC-7300. I live in an RF quiet location in East Africa - at my QTH they both hear equally as well.

@@JibbarJabbar if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find test reports from on the air contest use that have some user interface comments. When I needed a radio to fight qrm on 20m, the sherrwood chart was quite useful. Anything in top 10 or maybe even top 15 now are pretty good.

Perfect response! The FT-710 excels selectivity!

It's also worth noting that the FT-710 can be had from GigaParts for $850, so even if the ICOM were the one that was marginally better on receive, the FT-710 is a lot less expensive at retail.

to avoid "OVF" - Adjust the RF Gain DOWN to the point where the band scope is not all blue, so that you are seeing vertical lines on a black background. The RFG indicator will light because you have reduced the RF gain from it’s center position - ignore this and turn up the AF gain to compensate for the reduced audio from turning the RF gain down. Just a suggestion that has helped me over the years.... Best and 73 de W3HLS, john

It is really hard to make these comparisons due to the settings: for example, it is worth noting that the ft-710 is set to a 3kh bandwidth. Set it to 2.4 and that would have sounded clearer. The Icom had a narrower bandwidth during the test. No?

One little detail… wouldn’t be fair to use the same audio output device (i.e. speaker) in order to have the same quality audio? Then we can really compare the sensitivity and clarity of the signal being received and processed by the device being tested. 73! KD5ERP (BTW, Yaesu fan ham; hi hi)

Yes, the Yaesu FT-710 and the IC-7300 have their differences, but ever so slight. First off, the same exact speaker should be used comparing two different radios. An experienced user can adjust filtering, RF Gain, EQ etc. and make one radio sound just as good as the other. I couldn't choose one over the other. They run neck and neck in my experience.

I use an FT-710aess as an HF receiver. It is quite interesting to listen to the world.

I’ve heard some say the 7300 is noisy, what say you? That one sounds irritatingly noisy.
@alexsmit18297 ай бұрын
Yes, the 7300 makes digital tearing noise. It also gets overloaded by loud stations or a neighbor's transmitter. That's why I switched to the Yaesu FTdx-101. It's like heaven and earth.

Yes, the IC-7300 is a slightly noisier than the FT-710. However, the IC-7300 is far quieter when compared to many old-school analog transceivers.

@@miker8379 The 101 simply allows you to customize your transmitter to a wider range of settings unlike the others. For whatever your needs are. If you need signal purity more than increased power, this can be easily customized. Either way, on your panorama you can see the signal you are transmitting after all the processing.
